  • Melted, beautiful dark chocolate!

  • He was always my Mother's favorite, I remember as a child she had 78's. Nowhere on youtube can I find the three songs of his that she loved the most, Blue Velvet, Hurt and Don't get around much anymore. Wish I could find them to play for her!

  • That's My Mama brought me here.

  • One existence, shall we say, has hit the dislike button! Aiming to be original? They failed miserably!

  • Coffee and cream

I'll be 75 Jan'4th but I still enjoy listening to the Oldies.Brings back memories of my mis-spent youth. Have a great year in 2012

  • So refreshing to hear the old songs and a singer with a velvet voice, takes me back to the good old days,

  • this is the 1960 Roulette version

  • @millsbrothers ...Superior to all others

  • wonderful memories with this..thanks

  • I can't see the dislike bar!

  • @foomboom2 There isn't one for obvious reasons. There is nothing to dislike

  • he does have a very romantic soft voice.

  • I'm 21 year old metal head when i first heard Billy Eckstine i think my heart skipped a beat. He is amazing.

  • I grew up hearing about Billy Eckstine since my dad was a bandleader and sang in his style. I never realized how this voice influenced him until many years later. What a fantastic and fabulous singer! He had it goin' on and many a young gal 'swooned' while hearing his honey throated timbre as he wove his magic around these classic ballads. A time which will not be seen again......thanks to empireken! You have brought audio joy to many!!!!

  • I will never forget,as a teenager my eldest brother taking me to London Palladium to see this FANTASTIC entertainer!!

  • This reminds me of Christmastime at my grandparents' house as a boy. They'd have this type of music playing all day long over the intercoms in the halls. A much classier generation than mine, I'm afraid. Thanks for sharing.

  • @KurtRileyOfficial You are absolutely correct when you speak of classier times in past generations. This is one really lovely tune and Billy Eckstine treats it like a treasure. Maybe that is one of the sad losses in today's world: the inability to speak from the heart without any trace of irony. Like you, I feel nostalgic for a time before my own.

  • @rr7firefly

    Ah, yes--"Young people today."

But are they really that different. Not to me. Of course there are differences, but my father that that my young values were crazy, and do too many fathers.

Young people need to find themselves just as we needed to. However, some of us were not permitted to find themselves because of the excessive pressures of narrow minds and the church. Love to you all.

  • Wonderfull Just wonderfull

  • My fav recording of 'B' is "More than you know", where he takes the bridge solo with that powerful bass that makes the room vibrate.

The 45/78 was backed with "Give me another chance", another perfect song for B.

    A musician's singer par excellence.

  • I'm NOT going to tell you my age, but I will say that this takes me back ... way back! ... and I love it, love it, love it!!!

  • I am 80 now, but I still remember wearing my "Mr B" collarand listening to his music while driving my Ford roadster with the top down!

  • He's complete I love him. He was the best. I'm a 76year old crazy

  • The great Mr B and the music of his era will never be captured, those that missed out on those times I truly feel sorry for you,"Those were the days",thanks Mr B rest in peace.

  • One of the greatest voices/talents of all time!

    Rest Peacefully

    BILLY ECKSTINE (1914-1993)

  • Never forgot my Mr B shirt.

  • I'M DANCING AT THAT HOUSE PARTY WITH A GUY I THOUGHT I JUST HAD TO HAVE AT THE TIME, NOW, I CAN'T EVEN REMEMBER HIS NAME. I DO REMEBER MR B FINE ECKSTINE THOUGH. WILL ALWAYS LOVE BILLY!!!!!!!

  • I heard Billy Eckstein in a club in San Diego. It was a fantastic experience! The deep, deep powerful, vibrato of his voice shook the room and everybody felt it to their bones. His songs, I Apologise, and A Cottage for Sale, were the anthems for failed romances, his Over the Rainbow, is the best! He was also a band leader and a big force in the history of Jazz. A lot of talent was in this man.

  • My children couldn't understand why I knew all the words to the songs of yesterday. I listened to them being played by my grandparents many years ago and I am still smitten now at 64. Billy Eckstine - fabulous !

  • This song took me back 60 years ago, and Im sitting in Birdland having a drink and hitting on some pretty young lady. It was a great song a terrific singer and a wonderful time of life for me.

  • BILLY ECKSTINE (1914-1993)

  • Awsome, absolutely and always..

  • Loved listening to Mr. B. in the late 50's and 60's and thanks to I tunes and U tube we can still enjoy this phenom of a baritone and wonderful entertainer.

  • 04/01/11 TO CORRIE 121 one year ago. TODAY AS YESTERDAY THERE IS NO ONE WHO CAN CONVEY A LOVE SONG LIKE THIS MASTERFUL PERSON. AND I AM AN 80 YEAR OLD GRANDMA. so great brains think alike!!!!!! roselli

  • Mr. B. has always been my all-time favorite male singer. His smooth and lush baritone delivery in his signature styling and made him the rage in the '40s. He carssses lyrics and personally delivers them like the writer would think envisioned. When he and Sassy got together for the great Irving Berlin standard Always it was majestic. And when the gals heard his version of Everything I Have is Yours they were entranced. You were the top shelf stuff Billy!

  • aaawwww . what can I say - I'm still as nuts about him as I was then. I used to listen to him over the American Forces Network when a youth in my native Denmark. Ah yeah, those were indeed good days.

  • i saw billy twice at finsbury park empire,i was 16/17,early fifties,wonderful

  • @music1950man

wow that's incredible. what was the atmosphere like ? i wish i was there , tho i am only young

  • @bopkick5 Back then, and I was around back then, we had so much less crime and hatred because we loved, and loved, and loved, and songs and performances like this inspired us to love and we did not have time to fight. We went to concerts, like Shady Grove in Maryland, and we enjoyed the best performers and we were in love; we respected our ladies; we opened the car doors for them; we NEVER disrespected them - God, I wish for those good old days!

  • @welwelwel2 Yes, you are correct, , , things were certainly much different at that time. For anyone who lived in that era of great songs, it's hard to believe the music that is on the airwaves today. What happened?

  • @welwelwel2 You're totally right and I was there, too. Best to you and hope we stick around for another couple decades if only to remind others how great this nation WAS.

  • @welwelwel2 BS. women were just as insane back then and you know it. they couldnt of just evolved in so few years.

  • @welwelwel2

I can appreciate your nostalgia. I, too, was around then. I was a fan of Billy, and even wore Billy Eckstine collars on my shirts. I saw him perform at the Palomar Theater in Seattle. However, wasn't that the period right after a world war when we were "enjoying " extreme inflation, product shortages, soon to be followed by the divisive "McCarthy" era and "Cold War" when hatred of those different from us was the mode? The past often looks better after cataracts set in.

  • The beautiful honesty of soul is overwhelming - makes me cry. God bless the great Billy Eckstine.

  • Thanks for the memories !! I saw Billy 'velvet throat' Eckstine sing this at a concert in LA as a 14 year old. I still have the program from that concert. Billy's music sounds as great today as it did back in the day. Thanks for the upload !

  • @waylonward maybe cause rappers came out. but Billy Eckstine's music is still ALIVE!

  • who ever dislike billy is wrong!

  • I think he was marvelous. Not a kid on the block who can vocalize like this man could.

  • this is for you, Todd sorry for all things i did wrong when you were my worker

  • There is only one Billy Eckstine; just like Nat King Cole. Where the hell did all the talent go in the last 60 years. We have just crap for music now; no romance and dance music.

They think yelling at you will suffice; sorry it won't cut it.

  • In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit....Please bring this beautiful music

    back again. AMEN

  • the shop that sold his candy striped shirts was in cambridge street off Sauchiehall street you would buy a couple of shirts then get you hair cut at Fuscos

  • Jon Lucien was right! HE IS THE EARTH'S GREATEST SINGERS!!!!!!

  • This great singer was friendly with my Uncles, who met him during their time in the Army. Turned up at their house in Glasgow to see micheal and James White.

  • This is REAL music.

  • find a better voice , wont happen , listen to this guy now cause it aint ever gonna happen again

  • imagine watching melted chocolate being slowly poured into a brandy glass.

    thats billy eckstine

  • @smengleur love your analogy. Its so apt!

  • Oh I have loved this recording since first hearing it growing up in the 1950's. Pure magic. Thanks for posting this.

  • I love this song! As a teenager I remember my older sister, just swooning over him. I also remember my older brother going out on a date in his Billy Eckstine wide collar shirt looking sharp! The years may go by, but the artist, and beautiful songs they sing, stays in our memory!

  • I cannot believe what a hadsome chap he was

  • just superb. Thankyou empireken.

  • I shall never forget hearing Billy sing this back in 1954 at Birdland. I was just getting out of the Navy. Those were days that were special and Billy made the memories uforgettalbe.

  • Some of you Billy fans out there maybe interested to know that an Elvis CD was released recently, and in it Elvis introduces Billy from the stage and pays him a nice tribute..he says that when he (Elvis) was in school,Billy was one of his *biggest inspirations of his life as far as singing goes" and then goes on to say that Billy "originated the high Collars 20 years ago" This Cocert by Elvis was recorded in May 1974...ust thought I'd let you know how much The King loved Billy !

  • What a lush arrangement!!! Great recording, and sooooo good to listen to.

Could this be from his MGM days..... (back in the days when movie companies could afford to have their own orchestras)

  • its a beautiful song & a very good singer & I love it

  • i was in the air force the first time i heard this. it has a lot of fond memories. its part of my life thanks for letting me hear it. i'll 78 yrs old july 2010, thats very soon. pordon my typing please.

  • nice one billy!!

  • Takes me back to a time I thought was gone forever...thank you for bringing back the

    enchantment! Bravo!

  • I LOVE TIS SONG BEAUTFUL

  • My father had this album in West Philadelphia where I grew up

  • Sounds like sixties but '51?

  • I have modeled so much of my music after his style that I would hate to learn that "nunicorng" comment could be true.

  • The fabulous Mr. B. Remember the Mr. B. Collars? How come no one sings with this kind of class today?

  • @waylonward Ah, but they do - listen to his daughter Gina - Her album is on Itunes - Everything I have is yours - Fantastic!

  • Is this true?

  • @DunhillHilton I have no idea to what you are referring.

  • Great song-Great voice

    Thanks a million for sharing.

  • @Corrie121 same here i'm 72...i still have my pic wearing a mr B Shirt lol

  • @Corrie121 haha im LITTERALLY 15 and i just wish they would still play more music like this nowadays!

  • @bambampat401

Congratulations on your good taste in music.

  • Just great. Immortal jazz vocalist. Listen to his great "I want to talk about you." Incomperable.

  • IT WAS HIS silky, rich and unusually powerful baritone on deep- blues ballads that won Billy Eckstine lasting renown, but his contributions to American jazz and pop music went well beyond his achievements as a first-class vocalist. Mr. Eckstine, who died Monday in Pittsburgh at the age of 78, March 8, 1993 of a heart attack

  • Nice.... Mr Eckstine, is irreplaceable

  • not the original but still very good

  • Fabulous, they don't make them like this any more

  • @mstricky1

    No, they don't.

And it looks like they never will.

  • How come he faded from the scene ,? he was and is one of the all time greats, the likes we wont see for a long time.

  • Boy is he missed.

  • Such a unique voice. Love it. Thanks to YouTube we can still hear it. I can't find my favorite song Temptation.

  • One of my all time favorite songs and singers! Many thanks for posting it!!!

  • What a beautiful song!

    Who wrote those magical lyrics?

  • The song was written by Al Hoffman, Al Goodheart and Edward Nelson. Not sure which one wrote the lyrics, but I think Hoffman, who is in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, was a composer. A brilliant man with over 1500 songs to his credit.

  • O yeah ! He mixed this song on one album live with Jelly Jelly and WOW

  • what a voice!, he was a talent.

  • please link to download mp3.THX

  • Always hasbeen one of my favorites, Fantastic Voice.

  • Great posting!

    Quick story about Mr. B..

In 1978, I curised on the VOLENDAM--a 5-night cruise to Bermuda..Billy Eckstine was one of the entertainers--but got dealdy seasick when we ran into one huge storm. A big disappountment for all of us--and I was told that would b e his last cruise ever!

  • Best thing Sinatra did was assisting this true creative giant in coming to the spotlight

  • hey good vid keep it up

  • must be the best!!

  • I was 16 wearing MR. B shirts and listening to his sides

with my (then) girlfriend. What a voice (it always worked)

  • BEAUTIFUL SONG!

  • Just marvelous!

  • "I Apologize" is a popular song, written by Al Hoffman, Al Goodhart, and Ed Nelson. The song was published in 1931.

Probably the best-known version of the song was recorded by Billy Eckstine. This recording was released by MGM Records as catalog number 10903. It first reached the Billboard magazine Best Seller chart on February 23, 1951 and lasted 19 weeks on the chart, peaking at #8.

  • I have the CD "Once more with feeling." It first came out in 1960.

  • Great singer and song! Thanks for posting.
