I was thinking more along the lines of possible drug dealings, gambling debts, perhaps a crazed fan obsessed with her, even the involvement of a co-worker is possible.
I do know this much, whoever killed her knew her habits, knew where she would be at X hour, home alone, so either is was an known associate, or they was watching her, as how much time at home do you figure someone like her actually spens there ? We had a very similar case up this way involving a white cheerleader & a black basketball player, who was accused of her death by beating.
Like you, I assumed he was just a handy patsy, but it turned out she had been seeing him on the sly, then dumped him, & he did not take rejection easily, so she died & he went to prison.
On the other hand, she was a celebrity, & they do attract the nut cases so he might be Innocent.

I never said a " close connection " had to be a romantic or even sexual one, just " close ", which could imply anything where two people come into contact either directly, or indirectly on a frequent basis.
Then again, it could be he ( whoever that is ) just lost it & beat her to death, but bear in mind, the majority of murder cases when excessive violence is used usually implies a romantic or sexual connection.
The excepption could be a psychopathic stalker, also a possibility.
