Guys, im a graphic designer, i love using photoshop and creating really nice backgrounds and such, but i really want to extend this to creating website designs and creating my own website with my own background design, and i was wondering what programs should i use? i tried pure HTML and about died after making one page haha! but if anyone could possibly get back to me with some advice on where to start and what to do i would appreciate it soo much its unreal, thankyou for your time,
Nice video. Maybe a bit too long. It would be better to make a couple of shorter videos, each focusing on a specific topic. Anyway, thank you for the insights! Cheers!
Great videos. I admire and appreciate your willingness to teach your knowledge and experience!
I'm quite new to web design, but have done a few static websites and I can work with html, css and a bit of jquery. I want to learn to implement my designs to a CMS system and have looked at your tutorial on Wordpress. Can it be used for clients to update and upload content? What about portfolio sites, where the clients wants to upload a new image with a description etc.? What CMS would you recommend?
@MrHammerman84 Thanks for the kind words. For CMS, I personally say stay away from anything to extensive. Check out a simple CMS solution called Perch ... grabaperch[dot]com
@mlwebco Thanks for responding. I will try a demo version of Perch to see if it will fit my needs. But I am also interested in getting started with Wordpress or Drupal, as they seem to be good systems to start using and learning, as they are big enough for most websites, and I might need to learn them in the future. Do you think the admin area is too complicated for clients on these bigger CMS systems? And you I eventually need to build an e-commerce site, wouldn't I need a bigger CMS? Thanks
@MrHammerman84 Perch is quite easy to setup and use. Give a test drive with their free-trial and you'll see. Yes, bigger CMS systems are hard to use, require a lot of time training your clients on them, they're clunky, etc. No need for that anymore. Stick with a simple CMS. Also, for e-commerce website, no need to hardly do any development work there. Mostly all e-commerce solutions come with CMS built in. Check out Shopify.com ;)
Okay so I have no idea what HTML and CSS are and I want to seriously invest my time into learning how to become a webdesigner for small businesses; where should I start?
Dude, you are truly the man and I appreciate the time you take to share your knowledge with us. I always tell people that the best way to learn anything is to just do your research on Youtube and your page is a shining example of that.
do most web design companies have actual offices that everyone work at or do most work from home and collaborate everything over the internet? I am really interested in web design and want to move to another country, it would be great if it didn't matter where i was so long as i was accomplishing work.
Very helpful! Thank you! 2 questions for you: how long do your projects take? People always ask how long it will take me to finish a website and I am uncertain what timeframe I should give them? My second question is, can you possible do a video on your design process. I'm starting out and always wonder if I am doing things in the wrong order.
Micheal, I enjoy your tuts very much! How do you find time to work at your full time job, do web consulting, run your ecommerce site and raise a family at the same time? Thank you!
@samueljh3 You're asking a very good question here. To answer, it's hard. Being a huge family guy, I can't lock myself in a room while my kids are up. They take pretty much 100% of my time. So I try to get as much work done after hours, when the kids are sleep. So majority of my work (even my vids) is done between 9pm and 2am most days. I don't take on too much that I can't handle in terms of client work. Also, working on building a biz with residual income. So I'm making $ while with family. :)
@VegaOmega23 With my full-time job yes. With my freelance career (between 30-50k). FYI - I've always maintained a full-time job in addition to my consulting biz.
@crreativeme Thanks for the compliment. I'm trying to look into teaching more, trying to practice with these youtube videos and possibly creating a training system/DVD for web designers. We'll see. ;)
i just stumbled across your channel today whilst having a weekly "learning session" lol. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a great source of information! Being a designer / web developer / jack of all web trades (haha) in this field now for 4 years i fully understand that it is a constant learning curve and really appreciate guidance and knowledge from people like yourself willing to share your experience. Ill deffinately be following you throughout my career! Cheers :)
And I've taken html, javascript, xml, some dreamweaver. But I really like the artistic side of it more than the back end, can you recommmend some books or websites that I can go to to learn more about web design?
I'm taking multimedia design in school. All my professors say it's the right way to go, because it gives me more options later on. My question is where do I start work to build a portfolio. Cause right now only things I have is for school. I would assume* that I would need to find a job to start that, but you can't find a job without it either. Even some entry level positions need a portfolio.
The best portfolio I've ever seen was Daver Werner's portfolio at Okaydave(dot)com. It's a portfolio that was built while in school using fictitious projects. For example, he redesigned the site for Wachovia and other big companies, but they were all fake. Non paying customers. But his portfolio showed what he could do. Amazing work. You can take that route. BTW, the market is huge for multimedia, not that many experts in that area.
The little work I have done I have showed to friends for feedback, but of course they don't always tell the truth and not much help on what to change. I may send you an email when I get some sites done up to see what you'd change. :)
Did email you about a question though, think it would be easier to answer in an email.
@ghanes14 - For sure, for more in depth discussions, emailing me is best. I'll always get you back, plus no character limit. Oh yeah, can't rely on friends and family.
your a genius mike thanks

Yes, there are tons of different sites out there where you can learn from a few that I like are:
bestwebgallery
webdesignerdepot
Look those two sites up, study the site they showcase.
