I saw her live once. I was like 9 or 10. She was fuckin AWESOME. She is the only one I remembered seein there. Even though she has never gotten the attention she deserves I always knew who she was because my mom told me about her, and then seein her live was like icing on the cake.

Actually, I would expect tucking to be harder on skates cuz you basically have to flip with your abs and flexibility more than the kick(since it's slippery)

I was a skater as well and I didn't even think to try a back flip ... If others get injuried trying it without the required phisical and technical skill, you cannot blame Surya ... It's like blaming Kurt browning or Jozef Sabovcik if skaters get injuried trying the quads ...

I happen to admire her and she was originally my favorite figure skater before others came along. Surya is the most amazing sensation that took over the ice, since Tonya Harding. FYI, that backflip was actually a flip off to the judges (the backflip is illegal in figure skating). She knew that she wasn't going to win the contest because of the biased judges and used the backflip to imply that she is proud to be the way she is and isn't willing to change herself for the sake of a competition (she has been outperforming other skaters in the past, but never won because she was unwilling to comply with their unfair requests to change the way she looked and dressed, etc.)

there probably aren't as many because the sport is artistically similar to ballet, but WAY more competitive & EXPENSIVE. it costs money to compete, practice, & have equipment. just surya's skates probably cost her upwards of $1000! High cost/time commitment & especially high competitiveness in a sport is a disadvantage for minorities, as seen in Surya's underrated career. surya's also from france, where there's probably a lot more opportunity for minority women in figure skating than in the US
