  • amen so many ppl dont account for everythin that is needed for great listening experience they think that droppin somethin in that has had 0 testing in every vehichle with different orientaions and cabin space and layouts not one setup suits all not taking in personal preference my fav thing with websites is how many have on there main page all the world titles they have even of there results from 10yrs ago and those numbers are a result of the vehichles builder not the woofer alone

  • "Simple advice however incorrect, should be favoured to complex advice."

Surely the length or complexity of the advice is not the issue, but rather, if the advice is right or wrong? Or am I missing your point Pete?

As I'm trying to learn how to design a box (as a relative newbie) I'm faced with contradictions, opinions, personal preferences, and even for want of a better word 'prejudices' for and against enclosure types, manufacturers etc. For a newbie one can wind up very confused.

  • But I would add that 'Simple' Advice isn't necessarily the 'Wrong' advice, or giving a shorter repsonse, doesn't mean it's the wrong answer!

  • If the guy was looking for a 'Simple' answer, then he's gone to the wrong person. If the customer knew you, he'd understand that you're not the simple; one sentence sound bite, type of person.

However Pete, sometimes a few more 'Laymens' terms or a few more of your 'Analogies' wouldn't go a miss for those less knowledgeable.

Given the variables Is there a point at which you say; Well this is the best I can build given this particular circumstance!

  • This being said bro, keep up your good work and hopefully make this a serious go.I aint mad at you I merely suggest you teach idiots the long drawn out way to tend to the layman. :)

  • fluid is any substance that flows or deforms under an applied shear stress. Fluids comprise a subset of the states of matter and include liquids, gases, and plasma. That being said you are right in that reguard, Im not aware of any complications of time displacentcy within the cabin of a vehicle given is particular length and diameter. Flow of sound waves ( which are not a gas) has alot less resistance compared to Staples center. You take sound science serious but complicate common sence.

  • I must comend you for being fanatical about sound acoustics. I have a few points to mention, Firstly being that if someone asks for you to teach them, they obviously dont know enough to understand the technical ramble you gave. There are those of us that have intelectual superiority over the masses, and if we want to teach a man we live by the golden rule K.I.S.S. i.e. Keep it simple for stupid. Read on -

  • @7daylife1 Just to clarify, the guy I mention in this video wasn't coming to me for a lesson in acoustics. If there's a simpler correct answer to his question, I'm all ears.

  • @HexiBase in order to process your request i need way more information. my design are very precise, for them to work properly i need a, b, c, and d information. you only giving me A.

  • When i heard you mention Viscosity I had to ROFLMAO....

    .

  • @7daylife1 And why is that?

  • Viscosity is a measure of the resistance of a fluid which is being deformed by either shear stress or tensile stress. In everyday terms (and for fluids only), viscosity is "thickness" or "internal friction". Thus, water is "thin", having a lower viscosity, while honey is "thick", having a higher viscosity. Put simply, the less viscous the fluid is, the greater its ease of movement (fluidity).

    .

  • @7daylife1 Sounds like you have your work cut out for you then, with all the science that you have to correct, particularly when it comes to kinematic viscosity (as it pertains to the ratio between inertial and viscous forces.) If you'd like to argue your way to removing Reynolds number out of acoustics, be my guest.

  • The only real thing youi proved is that you can confuse someone, and that you can speak gigantic words which in reality have absolutely nothing to do with sound acoustics. I spent 4 years in college and have a degree in sound reinforcment and live sound technology. Some of the terms you spat absolutely had nothing to do with sound..Dammit son quit trying to make folks look stupid and teach what you know in a simple manner..... it is more respectable.

    .

  • @7daylife1 Four years in college and no one ever mentioned to you that gases are fluids too? What exactly are you busting me on over here?

  • no one is slapping themselves in the forhead u gave him a bunch of seriouse technical shit for no reason, he's an everyday guy building a system not a rocket scientist tryin to break 200 db,

  • Pete, Can you design a 32 order bandpass enclosure for me? I don't care how it will sound, I just want to brag to people how many orders my enclosure has!

  • Hey lol. Some people just don't understand. I def dont know anywhere close to u as much but I do understand that u can't give him a straight answer because u don't want to jut give him a random number and he not like it. He won't notice if it's a daily driver anyways. One day I wana take my car to u and u do a complete no setup for my car. I have a dc level 5 12" with an Audiopipe 3000d and I'm sure it's not the greatest equipment but I think it'll work especially with a box u could prob come u

  • even if you ask about the TSP's on Drivers in most retail outlets the staff have no idea what they are , let alone know how to apply them to an enclosure design or enviroment the system will be used... oops sorry more Mumbo Jumbo :o).

and what does Chem class havto do with Acoustic engineering?

  • hey hexi can you do a talk on free air resonance?

  • Comment removed

  • I agree. Very well stated. I get the same questions all the time.

  • If i was to buy a set of plans from YOU for a box for the trunk of my car

with me giving you the type of car, type of sub and max. dim. for box you could come up with a design to make the sub sound the exact same way facing toward the cabin through the middle passage of the rear seats as if the sub and port was facing the rear of the trunk? see currently i have a box with sub and port facing directly into cabin. but if i turn box backward it gets louder but with more trunk rattle which i hate.

  • u know that kid probably never will understand all of the important aspects of a properly box design and all that it lintels. good info pete as always, u can not always help the mentally incompetent.

after hearing his response i wanted to smack the shit out of him. im sorry but he lacks in comprehension.

  • wow this applies to so many areas. "i just want an answer" hahaha

  • .... I'll be happy to admit that I got more than a little lost in the in-depth (but still simplified?) explanation there.. But if you got bored and decided to make a video series about all the subtle stuff that 99% of people don't think about or care about when it comes to the design of a box, I'm willing to admit that I would likely watch it once a day until I damn well understood.

Of course, if I even knew what i was looking for I could probably just read about this stuff, huh?

  • @PassiveRadiatorsRule I thought about doing that but then, instead of learning his lesson, he would probably come back to blame me and question my expertise.

  • oh man, I laughed so hard when you pulled out the definition of "mumbo jumbo"

  • @mporettim I generally like to be prepared with notes, and this one seemed particularly... noteworthy.

  • nice .. POV i look at it like you have done in the past with your favorite # on your shirt and i notice your head is way above that # humm accident i do not think so. i also notice that theres yellow lines in a walmart parking lot... why does it seems i am one of the few that can follow the yellow lines .. well you answered that in you own way . good job telling everyone your favorite # pete you rock

  • Got to agree. Most people think one design fits all cars and drivers. Sometimes one design is really good to a point were it sounds good in most vehicles but it will always sound better/best in one vehicle or the other.

  • @jeanious2009 Or, for that matter, an enclosure designed specifically for that vehicle will perform better than even the best matched generic enclosure.

  • hha i agee man i have found sever times where my friends go out and buy a sub and build a random box. and they come to me asing why t sounds soo bad. well i wonder why lol then i desighn them a nice box and they are amazed ..... ohhh geee.

  • i would like to see something along the lines of " hexibase's audio class 101 - X0X "

  • @gcs8 You and everybody else :-) Maybe once I'm not so busy (and if classes pay as well as the engineering work.)

  • I feel proud understanding about 80% of what you were saying in that written response ... :D I have only done audio stuff for about 1 and 1/2 years, and I have never owned or build a high quality box before.

But yea, I agree also, people don't realize how complicated a simple speaker box can be... ? :) good video

  • @ExpertOfSound Given 80%, I'd say that you live up to your screen name. From there, it's only a matter of representing the theories with interacting mathematical equations. Later on, I might produce a video about how complex the wave dynamics of a "simple" sealed box are inside of a particular size / shape cabin.

  • @HexiBase

    :D thanks!

I would believe you on the complexity of wave dynamics, even inside of a simple square. I thought of a good analogy on what you mentioned about people not 'understanding' how complicated it is:

Imagine somebody asking you how to fly a rocket to the moon, and then you responding with "well, get in the rocket and then use the controls to fly it to the moon."

    Same difference... lol :)

1 last thing, I want to learn more about the "dynamics" of audio... --->

  • my guess would be the client was a little intimidated by all the info and variables you threw at him. i was scratching my head half the time trying to figure out exactly what you were talking about. but then again that's why i have more knowledgeable people assist me in my installs and box designs.

  • @randomsuper Yeah, but just because an answer makes you scratch your head doesn't mean that an answer that doesn't make you scratch your head is more accurate. That's essentially the underlying point of the video.

  • man i need to have a chat with you about a box design for sure. maybe just a few recomendations, i mean i can design a mean box but you just brought up things that i never thought of before like how a bend in the port can change things, never thought of it like that..... great video!

  • @TheEvilOne343 Thank you. I'm here to entertain and to inform.

  • Haha gotta love the un-educated!

  • @ddrking5555 They're a handful, no doubt about it.

  • @HexiBase

----> ... and I am wondering, what is a good college course or a website I could go to learn about this? :D Thanks again.

  • @ExpertOfSound You have to borrow a little bit from a number of fields. It's really the same way as with music albums; there may be just one worth-while song on the whole CD. Above all else, you'll need to borrow from physics, (particularly in the areas of wave and fluid mechanics,) and mathematics, (mainly algebra, geometry, and the basic trigonometry functions.) As for a website that ties it all together for use in acoustics, I wish there was one... It sucks not having a solid reference.

  • Its not mumbo jumbo. This is why I don't buy prefab boxes. Its too many variables. While I do go by specs because I am not as advanced as you, I do tend to build the box to fit the car. It has gotten me some nice results for the cars I have done. I do know that sound travel different depending on conditions and by the environment it is in. This is why I built a small platform for my woofers to sit on so that the bass would see like its traveling below my ear.

  • @LooseCannon48 At least you recognize the fact that there's a right way and a slack way to approach a problem.

  • @HexiBase He should have just said that he didn't know that all of that was involved. I would only want to know more because I love music. I am an audio tech at my church, but I have never had any training. I have a pretty good ear I think. This is why I bought a 30 band eq for my car.

  • why ask a question if you dont want the answer? ridiculous.

  • @10kpondguy My point exactly: If you're looking for a dummy answer, what the hell are you doing at PWK Designs?

  • Im not going to say I know all that stuff, but to say its meaningless is fucking stupid. For me, im going to have to learn these things through trile and error. But box rize, how the sound wave works with the car is just commen sence fact. Sorry i say commen sence agian but damn. Thats why one box sounds like shit in my car, then sounds awsome in my jeep. Even though its larger inside. wow lol

  • @tom58c Good example.

  • *Slaps Forehead*

  • @funnyface680 Yeah, that's quickly becoming a rather common sound, isn't it.

  • @HexiBase XD hahahaha yeah :P

  • OMFG is this for real?

I know Im not that much older than you but i remember a time when if someone asked a stupid question and got a stupid answer, that would embarras them just enough to try to wise up. Now it looks like kids dont even recognize a stupid answer even if it smacks them square in the face. I couldnt believe the response where he actually favored a generic recomendation over the actual scientific method of going about the answer. I guess you cant teach a man how to fish any more.

  • @GeorgiaScion Yeah, this is for real. Check out my Facebook group. And it's not that I expect for people to be able to do trigonometry and physics but, in the least, I expect them to be able to tell the difference between a proper approach and a bullshit approach to a given problem. Sadly, it looks like even that's beginning to be asking much.

  • i want build my own subwoofer for my re sx in jeep grand 95.
