I wish I can learn from you. I posted a video underneath called Asian Prints. It is not as good as your work of art but if you want to post comments and advices you are much welcomed.
@x3loveyuki Yes, try this: at first you can load water->light ink and dark ink; paint until it exhausts, then just add water to paint to the brush to complete the paiting. Thanks!
@aliedesuacido There is a remedy for it: try to use peach sap glue water to make it pointed and let it dry. After several days open the brush with water. This may not help if the brush is too old and lost too much bristle. Are you talking about calligraphy or painting? For Calligraphy, there is not much we can do about it. But any brush should be useful for painting, my suggestions: 1) Use it for other purpose like landscape painting. 2) Trim it to make it a smaller brush for drawing lines.
I only have one brush. It's long, has god long hairs, and the hairs is (in my oppinion) rather soft. Should I use another brush for painting bamboo, and if so: where can I get one?
Do you ever, go over the gray with green on your bamboo paintings? I watched the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha" (different country) but they drove thru a bamboo forest, it appeared as white, it was beautiful, If you have not seen that movie, it was awsome the photography. Your video is five stars!
Awsome start showing the bamboo plant and then as a back drop some of your bamboo paintings and then to the lesson, it just ties it all together. You are a good teacher!
I noticed the pots of colors. Do you use paints or colored inks on your gorgeous paintings? I love to watch you work. Your hand movements are like a lovely dance. What are good inks/paints to buy?
Thank you so much for sharing the beauty you create.
can you say something about the two brushes you are using
and also the "paint"
i have been using a "chinese" natural bristle brush but it does not hold its shape firm enough or go back to it's shape for something like the bamboo stalks which are firmly defined.
This synthetic brush is more elastic than the natural hair. There are roughly two kinds of brushes: stiff and soft. I would use a stiff brush for painting bamboo. Your brush sound very suitable for landscape.
I saw another artist paint the stalk with the brush held sideways, almost flat against the paper. I think the reason was to create a wider stalk using the full length of the bristles. Is this considered proper technique?
1st, it has to do, objectively, with the deferent stages in bamboo growth, i.e., young bamboo shoots vs. grownups. In storm the leaves go with the wind direction. And 2nd, it is, subjectively, the expression of the artist feelings and mood, usually poetic in traditional Chinese painting. Technically speaking, you need to pick one dominant direction, either upward or down ward, in a single painting. Yes, downwards are more common and that's why the Chinese character for bamboo is " 竹 ".
looks great man!

Your technique is wrong, the leaves of bamboo sould be long, and sharp pointed. And the joints of bamboo fails so much..

I have brushes that came with the Chinese Brush Animals kit. Would those be suitable for this kind of painting?
cometmoon 1 year ago
@cometmoon Yes, but a good wolf (stiff) hair brush might help a little bit in painting bamboo.

Is there any significance to the direction the bamboo leaves are facing? Are the leaves always painted downward?
