Thanks. Reminds me of the day I spent hours in the station waiting for the west bound to appear our of the snow. A train had crashed on the other line and all trains were routed through here. February 1986.
Typically those DPU's are for the climb to the top of Kicking Horse Pass, then the decent into Field. Rogers Pass will usually add the DPU's for the Macdonald tunnel and the Connaught tunnel.
But other than that, yes those DPU's could be for the Mountain Sub. (Rogers Pass)
I love it I really like trains so I will stand like 5 feet in front of it and still love it :)

Thanks!
They use them as helpers to push the trains up the steep grades.

oh okay so those grain trains are loaded from grain elevators on the praies and then moved to vancouver to be shiped across seas?
widecabfan 4 years ago
Correct.

yeah umm do you know why they use power at the back on those grain trains?
widecabfan 4 years ago
Those trains are heading west through Roger's Pass, which is probably the steepest inclines through the rockies for CP Rail.
Those DPU helpers are there to reduce the stress on the couplers, as well as to help push the trains up the grades.
