Everyone who has paid attention to the series knows it was Big Boss. He was around the age of 50 when the project took place. Everyone also knows he left, but that's not relevant.

I'll say it again. Snake's rapid aging is due to the fact that the genetic material that was used came from an aged Big Boss; Snake's body simply catching up to the age of Big Boss's genetic material since he's a 'clone' of Big Boss.

In MGS1, almost at the beginning, you see someone taking a shit, and complaining about the weather, right before you meet up with the DARPA chief. This man is Akiba. He's also the same guy that gets knocked out by Meryl. Meryl wears his uniform. Nano-machines control the body, without them, you get what we call "traveler's diarrhea." Nano-machines also help Meryl's group in MGS4 "Act as one"
