I think that the war is being fought for many other reasons that are not general information. Money is usually a big reason for war. Billions $ that were being raked in by various mostly US companies 'rebuilding Iraq. The US government is owned by big business.
Propaganda is another reason - the US want an international & domestic profile that shows them as always at the frontline, not letting anyone push them around. Governments are quite happy to allow some troops to die for that.
