Hey saralaughs. Great idea. I don't remember much of the late 60s and most of the 70s so to hear stories of people who "met" us (Gory, Dick, and me -- the three original Ethnogs) would be great. Dougal
Hey Dougal, you got it. I'll look through my Ethnog journals and post some of my favorites. I will need to censor some of them though. Because I DO remember the 70's--at least I remember the times I saw (and in some cases met) the Ethnogs.
Gory- live - Jim - dead. The juxtapostion of rock's two brightest stars - the image of a long distance runner, Gory, literally dancing on the grave of the sprinter, and celebrating/mocking the once bright flame of Morrison with Jim's biggest hit - "Light my Fire" - his most famous song, and one Jim did not write.
Laselva3--Nice catching that Jimbo didn't write that one. I was tweaking him for ripping off our songs. Speaking of Three Dog Night, those bums ripped off our "Papa Told Me to RSVP" and made it a hit. It's shocking how many hits from other bands were Ethnog's originals. We had a lotta' spies in our garage pretending to be our friends. The price of talent. Thanks for noticing I still smell like a couple wet dogs--it's all in the pheramones, baby!
btw, gory i meant to tell you that i went to college at univ of michigan at ann arbor. Late in the summer of 1977, a band called "Asleep at the Wheel" came to campus. They reminded me of the Ethnogs. I came to believe that they ripped off your incredibly original style if not your actual music. Ever heard of them?
Gory I'm glad you took my advice to come out of retirement. You should have performed DYF so the world could know that Mojo ripped you off. It seems like only yesterday we were backstate at The Greek imagining where we would be when we were old. I hope that you'll consider an interview 4 my website profiling the power of thought.... Let's trip down memory lane soon with some harmonies. Thanks for dinner; I'm glad we sat in a spot away from autograph seekers....
Hey ThoughtSmithCoach--How can I retire when the fans keep bringing me back! I remember opening The Greek for some cat named Neil Young many years ago. Were you there then? Sure, I'd love to do an interview on the power of thought. I had one last week. But do I need to have one during the interview? I'm not good anymore at having spontaneous thoughts anymore. Too much history. Keep in touch, baby!
Hey Saralaughs--Great to hear from you. But that was a little insulting telling me I no longer look like a punk. Never forget that Gory Bateson will always be a punk, even if he doesn't play punk music. Later, gb
Hey Gory, great little video. You always hated Morrison. You told him that you would "throw salt on your *%$#** grave some day." Did you?
Just to set the record straight, I think we disbanded in 1986 or was it 82? I know it was in the 80s. We just didn't show up for the concert at Shea Stadium. I think the Allman Brothers were on the bill as well and they had to play a double set.
I'm looking forward to the gigs in Phoenix and Chicago this fall. Here's to the ETHNOGS.
Dougal--Great to hear from you man! I did throw salt on his grave. You're a member of The Ethnogs, so you know Morrison stole several of our songs. I was just throwing salt in the wound so to speak.
I can't remember when we disbanded. Not sure how you can remember after all that you did. But I do remember blowing off that gig at Shea. We were supposed to be top billing, not that brother band.
Can't wait for Chicago. I wonder how many of our fans will be there.
It was either you or me Otto. We just couldn't have two amazing guitarists competing like we were. It turned out all right for you though. Didn't you end up as lead with The Empiricists for a time?
Gory Bateson is the lead singer of The Ethnogs, a powerhouse rock band from the 1960s and 1970s, though they disbanded in controversy in the mid-1970s. They reunited very briefly in seattle of this year. The doors are credited with "Light My Fire," but Gory always thought it was ripped off from one of his lesser known hits "Douse Your Flame."
Gory Bateson live -- after all these years! Still a punk. Lots of heart. Hearing impaired, thus the flatter voice that we are used to. But you gotta love the spirit!
What other songs did The Doors rip off?
