Facing down the odds and spending so much time up there with no shelter, almost blind, and struggling for DAYS getting yourself down with no ropes on the most difficult descent in the world, I feel makes you a living legend as well. I still have Graham's book No Way Down and it's horrifying, but also an amazing account of human will to survive. I'm astonished anyone made it off the mountain at all. I'm happy for you Wilco, and also I feel for you having gone through all that and survived.
That message (as Gaeilge) at the end is so unbelievably sad, give what happened to poor Gerard. He seems to have been a special man. This video is amazing. Mind blowing. RIP to all who lost their lives there.
Terrific short film. Gives you a feel for the beauty of the place, the danger, and the thrill of the climb. It also gives you a feel for the desolation, isolation and utter lonliness of the place also. The exhaustion in the faces of the climbers as they talk on the phone in the tent late in the video.Dave Watson's "clip" on the Bottleneck {which can also be found on youtube} is simply amazing as far as the clarity and color but I think this is the best K2 clip I've seen. Thanks.
Climbing K2 must be harder than finding a YouTube page without even one comment by a complete twat; a task that is virtually impossible.
I guess some people climb mountains, and others just wish they could climb a little higher on the evolutionary ladder in order to achieve more altitude than the planet's initial primordial soup.
@iwearcoolglasses I did in 2001 with seven friends. It really was a harrowing experience.
I also attempted to climb Mt Everest. three time between 1972 and 2009 when I reached 22,000ft and was again driven down by the adverse weather conditions. No more attempts planned.
@Mkamalid Though they all got to the top of K2 they were very late coming down. They were too tired and had a hard time finding fixed rope in the dark, then there were a bunch of avalanches and falls. 11 people died coming down the mountain, and a few had to be rescued. Wilco, the guy featured, lost most of his toes.
@SDCmorg thanks :). horrible sotry. but that's K2. this is not fair for me to say but I respect mountaineers who go to such places only if they accept the 50/50 % outcome. and if they embrace it then I tip my hat to them. I hope ther families are proud instead of sad. is it worth it? I dont know, but nothing for me is better than going on a mountain. 6:11 is a magical moment
Its a great shame that man has too miss out on these beautiful mountains because of silly world quabbles, something which they have no control over. @rodtorre7 your comment shows how ugly your thoughts are.... we are here to climb mountain as a passion....people like you spoil your own as well as your countries image by using such pathetic expressions...shame
That has got to be one of the dumbest things I have read in a while. A controlled explosion to make it "safer". Don't you get why these people do this stuff....because few others can. Make it "easier" and it isn't worth doing. I can't believe you would even say stupid "sh*t like that.
I think that's a great idea. While we're at it, why don't we just blast away the whole peak. If we blew the mountain down to say about 6000m high, it would be easier and safer to climb for everybody!

5:05 Was that part to the left at 5:05 what took out the fixed lines? You can see in this vid from a year a later that the left part appears to be much smaller than what you can see here. The right side of the serac also appears much smaller the year after too:
/watch?v=Ou3m2Ic4gFE
And a question... was there a reason why the teams couldn't rappel down to the bottleneck or off the rock face to the left? Was it because you guys had no line left at the summit to do a rappel?
@Spudst3r Isn't that something else, to see the size of the serac in this vid and then look at it in later ones. Really helps someone to understand on a small scale, what happened up there with the serac. The amount that must have broken off would have been insane. Such a shame, but that is the risk you take on any mountain. Utmost respect for all the people that attempt these beasts.
some of the local people found a book that contained 8 or some say 7 pages which was written on gold pages but nobody could understand the language written . and then these guys sold it to someone..we r muslims and our graves face towards the east but there r some ancient graves and thr faces r towards the north.
@pchapman905 unfortunately our people are not that conscious about historical heritage of ours.. they didn't make copies and sold it in the black-market for 8 thousand dollars :)

@seige184 The guy wearing the red suit that comes into picture at 3.19 was the late great Ger Mc Donnell from Ireland. Unfortunately Ger lost his life on the descent after a being the first ever Irish man to ever summit K2. He was not alone as another 10 climbers perished along with him following an avalanche.

@jessicadk100 yes very beauiful after what happend then, at 4.28 you have Rolf Bae (wikipedia) died, his wife Cecilie Skog saw him wiped away by the ice, you have Gerard McDonnell (red jacked with some black) who died in altitude sicness after helping others. You can find them on wikipedia
@ast453000 its believed he was killed in an avalanche or serac collapse somewhere on the descent. no-one knows for sure as the only possible eye-witnesses were also killed. a bad day for high altitude climbing
Gerard McDonnell was an outstanding young man from Limerick. He is an example of what is good in life and his courage and determination should be an example to all who need courage when we are face their own troubles in life.

she is a dealer of death to many who have tried to conquer her!
in 2001- I and seven others climbed this 'Black widow' as we call her.
We almost got stranded when the weather changed drastically whilst on our descent.
Don't dismiss her, be very respectful of her attraction and seductive powers.
Hence her nickname 'Black Widow'!
