Why do the good bands slip through the cracks?

@shteak they dont slip through the cracks. Just like any other industry, the music industry is corrupt and full of slimeballs that control what music is heard. If they can not control the sound or production of the music, they wont sign you, and thus you are basically blackballed unless you sell out and give in to their whims (See Metallica)

Just because they started to hate thrash doesn't make them sell outs. ...And incidentally, IMHO the only bad album they ever did was StAnger. That's because they made the mistake of listening to their fans and trying to be something they're not. So, maybe StAnger they sold out a bit.

@shteak Sorry you are upset about that. But, Metallica completely went against all of their principles they stated when they started. Cliff Burton would NEVER have allowed them to turn to alternative metal garbage that has nothing unique at all. They were trendsetters who just turned into another useless coprorate run pile of filth. I will never support that band or their music again. I dont care how good it is. I have plenty other bands who hold true to their art.

@howdyfeller I can completely respect that... Well said. To be fair, Cliff was already intent on leaving the band anyway. Personally, as a musician i suppose i always understood where they seemed to be going... Although i started as a"Metal" guitarist/songwriter with a passionate but naive approach... But as i grew, i changed... The stuff i did 14 years ago was raw and honest, but that doesn't make the simple, easy listening stuff i can do now any less meaningful.

That is like a kick in the nuts. To me that is flaunting the fact that they gave into pressure by record companies and other influences to change their sound so that they could make money

@howdyfeller Then we end up with the unfortunate question of "What matters most: Fan or Band happiness?" What if you're actually doing what you always wanted to do, yet you're constantly accused of selling out?

@shteak I think it ultimately comes down to band integrity. Selling out to me means that you actually give up what you believe in as an artist for the sole purpose of making as much money as you can. At this point you also detatch from your original fan base and may attract a new fan base at the same time. Personally as a musician, I will always choose my art over a quick buck. I prefer a legacy of uniqueness instead of just another band.
