her name sounds like the way the japanese say the word tiger so she was dubbed the palmtop tiger because of her personality

ryuuji just dubbed himself a dragon becuase only a dragon could be on equel footing with a dragon in japanese fables

when I consulted japanese friends they said ryuji technically didn't mean anything, nor did a dictionary show any results but his name is probably a composition of two different words to make one. Taiga however like I said doesn't mean tiger, it means river stream.

It's called "Toradora" because Tora means Tiger, Taiga sounds like the english loan word Tiger... Ryuji contains the Kanji "Ryu" that means "Dragon" and the English "Dragon" sounds like "Doragon" when said with japanese phonetics. Romanized spellings are different depending on which romanization used. Sometimes its Ryu, Sometimes it's Ryuu. Your "Japanese friends" would have known this, unless they're like six years old.

my japanese friends don't live in japan and only visit during the summer so I highly doubt they are so obsessed with anime enough to make the connection between the name, besides the point I asked them if ryuji meant dragon in japanese and they said nope I didn't ask them if it was witty wordplay

Ryuji and Taiga are, in fact, a kind of play on words.

Blacksheepwall79 has a point with what Ryuji means. This could even be a coined term or slang in fact and the sad part is that, like English, there are terms that exist that not everyone knows about. The same thing goes for every other language. ^_^

Taiga is a play on "Engrish" as my friend says *shrugs* Like the Japanese pronunciation of "Tiger", not the Japanese word for Tiger...soo, it still counts. =3
