When Frederik plays that last guitar solo after they have finished trading off, I can't help but feel as if he's like "All right, fuck you Mikael, now I shall you my true skill" after they have tried beating each other with their trade offs. And then they finally give up trying to beat each other and just do guitar harmonies with each other. :D

As far as musical integrity goes I find Watershed to be the magnus opus of Opeths repertoire...The songs are extraordinarily well tended-to and complemented by flawless engineering. As a whole, it's evident in its' pacing/structure that Mikael was crafting a nod to the art form of an "album". He was doubtlessly steering away from metal in that album, but even when he didn't he approached the conventions from a fresh angle. Didnt want to leave this comment but no-one else was saying it.

@Daan7000 Blackwater park is by far their best album; followed by at two way-tie betweenDamnation (no death metal growls at all), then deliverance (probably their heaviest album) and Ghost Reveries. Still life also has some very good songs (benighted comes to mind), and I know there are alot of other people who would pick albums from their back-catalog but the production is terrible on them and they sound incomplete...

In blackwater park, ghost reveries, deliverance, an damnation, IMHO mikael perfected opeth's sound and blend of heavy metal, progressive rock, jazz and folk-acoustic. I forgot to mention watershed. Its a really good album, but it was definitely a departure from their previous sound, not as heavy. I rank it behind ghost reveries. Cheers hope that helps

@Daan7000 If you want something just brutal (I hate using this word but is the only apropiate word), choose Deliverance and Ghost Reveries. If you want something soft (not pussy music), choose between Heritage, Damnation and also a few songs of each old records are also "soft". The old records, in my opinion, are one of the best albums of Opeth, but all the albums are great. Worth of listening all. Cheers!
