here in oahu hawaii if our power goes out, we make hibache cooking over open fire in our back yard, steak, portuguese sausages, then we boil water and make instant ramen noodles, pork and beans in a can, were set all and is happy....except i worry bout my refrigerator foods goin bad.......LOL
I like the ash idea, I keep a couple of metal trashcans that I put ashes in for throwing on the driveway. That also gives them a chance to cool so as not to start a fire in leaves in the woods as it would if you threw hot coals into the woods.
We have occasional power outages here in winter too. Good to be prepared. Love your videos!
Hi Nancy. I like your videos! We lose power a lot in my area. I built a battery powered automatic emergency system to keep things humming, like the fridge, freezers, toaster oven. 2000lbs of cell phone tower batteries and 2 big inverters give me days of power with no generator. When the neighborhood goes dark, I turn on every light I can find, play Innagadadavida on the stereo while I vacuum the upstairs bedroom with the windows open so the neighbors can watch. Does this make me a rat?
nancy im in nova scotia. we get bad storms here too. when calling for a a bad sttorm i fill bathtub too. we use wood for heat. i do all laundry everyone has shower. check battery supply. i cook stew or other boiled dinner that east to heat on coleman later. homemade soups etc. since my stroke i carry mini light in my pocket just in case. ...we use ashes on ice here too.
I think it's important to have backups for cooking/light without power. We have a gas grill, gas burners, two fireplaces, and sterno with a camping stove. I prefer oil lanterns to candles because of the flame. Lehman's has great, inexpensive lamps of various sizes. Good video, Nancy!
@ickiepoo oil lanterns give off a lot of smelly fumes. Beeswax candles are actually healthy and clean the air! You can put them in the bottom of a quart canning jar or something to keep the flame inside. It also makes the flame brighter.
over here parts of victoria and adelaide have had power cut because of the power company load-shedding. they have to shut off certain parts to save the whole grid. not good in 45+celcius heat.
Oh wow, loved this video. Some of these tips could be used here in FL when we have the hurricanes in summer and lose power. I especially liked the tip about using the bleach..One major difference for us is we have all kinds of trouble finding ice to keep perishables from going bad.
I was without power once for a week due to an ice strorm several years ago. I was very lucky that I had a coleman propane camping stove. I cooked on that, and would boil water so I could bathe a little, I also put some put a few pounds of rocks into the boiling water and got them scalding hot them dumped them into a metal cake pan with a lid and slid it between the sheets in the bed as a bedwarmer, it was good to get into a toasty bed in the freezing cold.
Hi Nancy, Good video. We still have power..YEAH!!! We've had about 3 more inches of snow on top of the ice now and its still snowing. Sunday its suppose to get to 42 degrees..heat wave. Maybe some of this will melt. If the electric does go out we have everything we need. We've been through this before..LOL Have a good day. Lisa
Our lovely weatherman said that Mon. thru Wed. more snow. Im in southern Ohio and we usually dont get that much. Maybe a dusting here and there. But this year is making up for the last 7 years I think...lol. I've been watching the trees around the house. A tree fell on my Dads garage Wed. night. But we feel blessed, I know up north people are having a bad time of it. I hope your not one of those people ringrose.
I live in the Columbus area so just below the worst I guess. I feel bad for the people without power. It must be freezing. At least they made the bus free yesterday and today. Thanks :)
heat wave and 42 degrees , i take it you are talking about F not cels. here now its close to 115. thats a heatwave. my chilis are wilting like crazy even though well watered.
I guess this is all relevant now that there are so many without power in the northeastern USA.

NancyToday 3 years ago

I never heard of cake pans with lids. Very interesting idea! How can you choose stones that are okay to boil? Dont' some explode?

I remember in VT making grilled cheese sandwiches in a frying pan on top of the woodstove along with pancakes. They were the best I ever made!
