@16sag7 , You made some good points about Bewitched I agree with. As a Man I all so would want a woman to be her complete self. To Darrin the way he lives is normal to him that is true, but Samantha being a witch is normal for her and Darrin had no right to ask her to stop useing her powers. Samantha is smart enough to know when to use and not use her power. Endroa is right Darrin is like most mortals in many ways Dispite Samantha saying different.
I know a lot of people think Darrin is sexist or whatnot, but I don't think he is. A lot of people these days think of marriage as a partnership between two people but really it is the merging of two people becoming "one flesh". Sometimes you have to give up part of your old life to do that. That is how a marriage lasts- through compromise and selflessness, rather than trying to maintain equal power... it just won't work.
@16sag7 let's face he's a 1960's husband who does love his wife but deep down feels threatened by the fact that in reality she has the upper hand in the marriage
I think having a cool, sassy, worldly and beautiful Mother-in-law like Endora would be great! Just think of the incredible dinner conversations about her and Diogenes!
Darrin also went too far disrespecting Endora. yes, Endora can be a bit too much sometimes, but that's who she is and she's still samantha's mother. i never really liked Darrin that much because he was too damn up-tight, serious, and controlling. didn't he also get replaced by another actor after a few years? and if he did, that "replacement" almost resembled the original Darrin. but i could be mistaken if the original Darrin got "replaced".
@TT1478 Yes,indeed..the original Darrin,Dick York suffered from severe back problems, and some say he was a heavy drinker,he was replaced by Dick Sargent in I believe the 6th. season.
@david2407 i kind of figured the original Darrin got replaced. and what a resemblance between the original and replacement. and they both have/had the same first name. lol
oh give it up darrin the only reason u h8 samantha's magic is because as a 60's man u can't handle the fact that you're the least powerful one in the marriage! thats what i realise from this perspective; great as the show is it stereotypes women an awful lot
she is crazy, that's what makes it so funny cuz anyone sane knows the things she ACTUALLY saw couldnt have been. even she admits its a dream...imagine a world where people popped in and out, and could turn humans into inanimate objects.i wished i had sam's powers when i was a kid. anyone with me on that?
16sag7, you made a perfectly good point Darrin couldn't accept Samantha as she was "A witch" so he tried to keep her from useing her powers. As Endora pointed out Samantha is who she is and Darrin can't change that. As a Man I all so would not want to change any women but accept them as they are. If Darrin really loved Samantha then he should accept who she is and not try to change that.
Darrin has always gotten a lot of flak over the decades about restricting Sam's powers...it always seemed like an odd decision, seeing as how any man would leap at the chance to have a wife who could conjure up whatever they wanted. I think there is a point about him being a little jealous of her being more powerful than him, but also don't forget he first witnessed her powers when she used them destructively against Sheila, so he probably saw mayhem ahead--and, he was right on that count...
@mtopper66 well, it's not only the jealousy factor. It also has to do with Sam not even NEEDING Darrin if she could just do whatever whenever. Then, there'd be no show.
In a very real sense, no man or woman really NEEDS each other whether or not they are human or otherwise. But the clear point of the show is, Sam and Darrin both very much needed each other, because they were madly in love.
watched a special on sitcoms with one or two beds in bedroom. Seems Bewitched was the very first show (minus the Flintstones cartoon) that showed two married ppl in the same bed. True Trivia!
That is very well written. (Yes, I'm a man, as well. & yes a straight man if that makes any difference). We still have that kind of struggle going on in this world in many different forms. In some respects world & U.S. of 2009 is not much different for many than world & U.S. of 1964 (which is big shame). (Of course, back in that year of '64, when this 1st aired, was year that original Voting Rights Act passed & was signed into law by President LBJ -- to give historic context to this ep).
I agree that Darrin was a bit over with his ban on witchcraft. On the other hand in I Dream of Jeannie Tony was alright with Jeannie using her powers provided she didn't get him into trouble.
The power relationships in this show are so interesting. Darrin is a man, therefore he has power (according to the rules of the time) but Sam has magic which gives her power. Darrin tries to stop her from using hers, but she uses it anyway. Aw the struggle. It's cool watching my favorite show as a kid with new eyes.
Watch your step young man!!! Mother is watching!!! I love this episode!!! There was still a difference in people back then. They may have had thier prejudices, but they were more benevolent then. More lovinging and accepting. Too bad that did not spread to racwe in that time.
