Amanullah Khan was a great king, and as an Afghan Tajik I have to say he is probably the greatest leader we had. He created unisex school, funded education, created an airforce, poured money into necessary industries, as well as guaranteed human rights. The Islamists wanted him out and they called him Kufr so he would never come back to his homeland again. How sad.

A very good overview. I remember Kabul well during the "Golden Age" of Zahir Shah. The influence of Amanullah was everywhere; Dar-a-la-man Palace, the Queens Palace the lovely gardens where we had picnics. My favorite was the royal village of Paghman; the Opera House, the Mosque, the Royal House were all magical. In all of Afghanistan, Paghman was my favorite. Thank you for posting this.
