The claims of that story where investigated and proven to be false by the Sri Lankan police. It was in the UK tabloid the 'Mirror'. Clarke received his knighthood AFTER the allegations were proven false.

Would it surprise you if Aurthur smoked pot? It certainly wouldn't surprise me in the least. Carl Sagan and Richard Feynman both liked to hit the bong quite often, and to my mind the mental image of Aurthur Holding lighter to bowl and trying not to cough as the bong bubbles really isn't even incongruous enough to be comical.

Scientific-minded intellectuals are not, by and large, stolid, stuffy curmudgeons in lab coats.
