oh brings back memories in the years of BAOR - time that I shared as a "Kraut",
teenie-aged, visiting the British-Forces-Cinemas later in the 70ties, beeing very nosy about all the kinds of Ice-Cream, that was on sale in the "Globes" in Rheindahlen, Brügge, later in Hemer.......
Every Saturday I went to the Odeon as a kid. Every Saturday I had a chronic asthma attack at the Odeon and had to leave before the end of the film. Only 20yrs later did they realize that tartrazine creates a massive immune inflammation response. Thanks Kia-Ora!!!
The style of the adverts certainly got worse as the 1970s went on. I remember back in March, 1971, Kia-Ora sent us a brand new filmlet for New Kia-Ora Royale, featuring Arthur Mullard asking a common as muck usherette for the drink. It didnt last long. The boss came up the box and asked me What the hell is that? when I told him that was the brand new Kia-Ora advert, he said: Theyre getting worse! Take it off! And I did.
Voice-overs on these adverts include Terry Scott as the cartoon little boy on the two Suncrush adverts from 1963; Patrick Wymark on the Cornish Ice Cream Like a Dream advert from 1968; Charles Gray on the Catch Them If You Can advert from 1969 and Tony Blackburn on the Orbit advert from 1969. David Rayner.
Thanks David. I'd never have guessed that it was Tony Blackburn in the Orbit ad. (5:20 part 2). Artists often adapted their normal speaking voice for these (eg. Terry Scott - Suncrush). Perhaps it's just me but I keep thinking I can hear Jimmy Young (affected American accent) in Zoom - Fireball XL5 (4:48 and repeated start or part 2).
@Ampex196 I think the voice on the Fireball XL5 Zoom advert may have been an American actor called Paul Maxwell. Whenever some British TV series or film called for a resident in the UK American in the cast, they usually got Paul Maxwell; Shane Rimmer or Peter Dyneley, who did the voice over for the Lyons Maid Thunderbirds advert, which is not on these reels, but I used to have it. David Rayner.
Lyons Maid were only issuing one or two new adverts per year to cinemas in the 1960s. When they sent us a new filmlet, it had to last us at least a year, being run between two and three times a day for that period. The fact that these ads are still in such good condition, except for the scuff marks evident with being run so many times, shows how much care I took of them. David Rayner.
@velocet1976 What I find amazing about the above, my old adverts reel, is that most of the filmlets are in Eastman Colour and, in theory, they should all have turned to a pinky red by now and yet the colours on them are still vibrant. Very odd. There is a gap between 1964 and 1967 because I sold those, along with another reel of early 1970s adverts. David Rayner.
the 60's were a fucking fruity decade lol

@fatdan8 I know what you mean - lol! In reality, of course, no more than two or three would have been screened in a public show.
