Taj Mahal man, a reason to do some research on immortality. I heard some of his more recent music. His voice is starting to change with age. Makes me sad I'll never hear another "Take a Giant Step" enough with the Tupac/Biggie/whatever bleeps bloops and voice samples. you know those voice samples are copyright. lame. Somebody records themselves saying "****** ******* ***" and then they own it. A mockery of art.
Taj was the first concert i went when i was 4yrs old at Penns Landing here in Phillyn i never stopped listenin ..He is one of the most underrated n underappreciated artists of our time
the "incomprehensible" lines are "struttin up from shanty town with a pistol at I waist" then the 2nd time it's "a ratchet" instead of "a pistol" - I THINK!
listened to Slickers and Jimmy Cliff versions and came back to Taj.Taj sings about pistol and ratchet 'at your waist' but towards the end tells us both items are at 'high waist'...I am guessing high waist means hips.Hey,great song about a bad nasty boy.
I like Taj Mahal's version better actually. The song is a reggae CLASSIC off of Jimmy Cliff's The Harder They Come, but this is just such a fantastic cover. I love the harmonica solo, gives me chills! Thanks Seh Sam for providing us with this!
this is a great cover, this is the first time i heard this version. i have always like taj mahal tho. Im not sure jimmy cliff wrote this song. i maybe wrong. i have a TROJAN RUDEBOYS BOXSET and jackie edwards doest the song. i thought edwards wrote it. i dunno. but that trojan rude boy box set is my favorite c.d. i ever paid for. its perfect. if you like this song get that set, im telling you my freind it is a special set. i have about 20 of the trojan sets and i like the rude boy one most.
This is a unique example of a cover version which is so so so good that in fact it sounds better than the original...and i thought only i felt that way coz i heard this cover version before i heard the original. All this while i thought that this is a song by Taj Mahal. For me this is Taj's song more than Jimmy's.
I can't believe how good this version is. I keep playing it over and over.

Caught Taj live in NZ many years ago. He liked the place and visited umerous time. If I'm not wrong, he has a son who decided to live in NZ.

Amazingly, a song not by Jimmy Cliff or even someone from that genre, but an equally amazing songwriter - Steve Earle

@howsitmista horse shit, it's a good version. but it can suck the Slickers' dick.

@howsitmista shouldn't be possible for anyone to have done a cover better than the original of this but yeah, he managed it!

I still feel "The Slickers" version has more feeling in it...can feel that sorrow in it more. - but was a treat to find this version.

I have to disagree. The harmonica spoils it for me, it's the one bad point in an otherwise near perfect track.
