  • I can't believe how good this version is. I keep playing it over and over.

  • Caught Taj live in NZ many years ago. He liked the place and visited umerous time. If I'm not wrong, he has a son who decided to live in NZ.

  • im sick of seeing this sweedish guy on every advertisment when i click on a video!!!

  • reminds me of a happier time, when nathan was still in misfits :'(

  • the only problem with this song is that it is too short!

  • This is my new favorite song.

  • too short of a song for how good it is..

  • Taj Mahal man, a reason to do some research on immortality. I heard some of his more recent music. His voice is starting to change with age. Makes me sad I'll never hear another "Take a Giant Step" enough with the Tupac/Biggie/whatever bleeps bloops and voice samples. you know those voice samples are copyright. lame. Somebody records themselves saying "****** ******* ***" and then they own it. A mockery of art.

  • Amazingly, a song not by Jimmy Cliff or even someone from that genre, but an equally amazing songwriter - Steve Earle

  • Ricaaaroolaaa!!!

  • like if misfits brought you here.

  • ah mr fredricks, this brings back a flood of memories, big joints, sunny days and lazing around in that great southern land called oz.

  • Totally agree. One of those rare covers that is better than the original

  • One Lada Gaga fan is upset because Taj Mahal can make real music.

  • been a fan of Taj for 45 years....he could cover "She lovesYou" and it is ALL...Run to the Rock for Rescue

  • I can't find "Slave Driver" by Taj, is it here somewhere?

  • top top top cover!! love it!

  • Man, I really hate it when this fades out. I'd like it to go on for ever ...

  • @pigface1709 I knowww!!!

  • @pigface1709 When I first heard this song over 30 years ago, I had the same thought - just a wonderful song that fades away way too quickly....!

  • I always liked Cliff. Fun when riding a bike.

  • Saw this on misfits!! Good song :) Better than everyone elses versions

  • @howsitmista

I just started watching this show and reading your comment made me smile, cuz this is exactly where I heard the song too.

  • @howsitmista horse shit, it's a good version. but it can suck the Slickers' dick.

  • @howsitmista shouldn't be possible for anyone to have done a cover better than the original of this but yeah, he managed it!

  • thank you!

  • Just makes me happy.

  • yeah man this song is so chill and awesome

  • love taj's rough as guts shanty style which does this song justice... rastafari

  • not enough people putting out music by this man...somebody I want Bacon Fat...bluejay007@ yahoo

  • i love the harmonica....fits this track perfectly.

  • This is fantastic :) Thanks!

  • My face used to hurt at his concerts...from the smile that was on it, from the start of the concert to the end.

  • You know, Taj Majal could cover Hannah Montana & it would sound great. Taj is the man of all men!

  • Great song and a great version by The legand that is Taj Mahal, but nothing beats John Marytn's version for me......

  • heard this track on misfits haha loved it straight away i heard the ub40 cover before but i prefer this one more melow love it thanks

  • puts some music of today to shame.

  • 5-17-2010. Ain't it great, the Taj is 68. Happy Birthday, Taj. Show these wanna-be's of today how it's done.

  • Love it!

  • gotta love Taj!!!!

  • Taj was the first concert i went when i was 4yrs old at Penns Landing here in Phillyn i never stopped listenin ..He is one of the most underrated n underappreciated artists of our time

  • thank you thank you thank you.... this is fucking awesome.

  • the "incomprehensible" lines are "struttin up from shanty town with a pistol at I waist" then the 2nd time it's "a ratchet" instead of "a pistol" - I THINK!

  • @EdomiteSlayerYoMomma

I think the pistol is 'at high waist'

  • @EdomiteSlayerYoMomma

listened to Slickers and Jimmy Cliff versions and came back to Taj.Taj sings about pistol and ratchet 'at your waist' but towards the end tells us both items are at 'high waist'...I am guessing high waist means hips.Hey,great song about a bad nasty boy.

  • @matthew550

A pistol at I waist, not high waist.

A ratchet is a switchblade if you didn't already know that.

  • How about that?

  • wow :) am i sure glad i stumbled across this.

  • i was jsut thinking the same thing

  • The only prob I have with that song is its not long enough I could listen to the Taj Mahal version for much longer ...

  • I absolutely agree.

  • Taj, my hero! Forever in my heart!

  • johnny,you´re really too bad.

    make love,not pain.

  • Struttin' up from shanty town with a pistol at my waist

    Johnny you're too bad

Struttin' up from shanty town with a ratchet at my waist

    Johnny you're too bad

  • favourite taj song. actually, mo roots is my fav album of his.

  • MYESSS, love this song

  • Where you going to run to?

  • Taj Mahal to be inducted into Blues Hall of Fame !!! This my fave song..i luv Giant Step too! Yay 4 Taj Mahal..memories!!!

  • Saw Taj sing this in a college gymnasium when I was about 12. Had a HUGE impact on me then. Thanks for posting, and thank you Taj Mahal.

  • I like Taj Mahal's version better actually. The song is a reggae CLASSIC off of Jimmy Cliff's The Harder They Come, but this is just such a fantastic cover. I love the harmonica solo, gives me chills! Thanks Seh Sam for providing us with this!

  • this is a great cover, this is the first time i heard this version. i have always like taj mahal tho. Im not sure jimmy cliff wrote this song. i maybe wrong. i have a TROJAN RUDEBOYS BOXSET and jackie edwards doest the song. i thought edwards wrote it. i dunno. but that trojan rude boy box set is my favorite c.d. i ever paid for. its perfect. if you like this song get that set, im telling you my freind it is a special set. i have about 20 of the trojan sets and i like the rude boy one most.

  • This is a unique example of a cover version which is so so so good that in fact it sounds better than the original...and i thought only i felt that way coz i heard this cover version before i heard the original. All this while i thought that this is a song by Taj Mahal. For me this is Taj's song more than Jimmy's.

  • I still feel "The Slickers" version has more feeling in it...can feel that sorrow in it more. - but was a treat to find this version.

  • @schwarav

I have to disagree. The harmonica spoils it for me, it's the one bad point in an otherwise near perfect track.

  • @Frobo86

I take that back, I quite it now. Fickle.

  • @schwarav Uh, its from the soundtrack to that, its by the Slickers

  • this is a fine melody...good work
