  • Go to Japan with an empty suitcase.

They are a dime a dozen over there, and titles that you would NEVER see, forgotten old junk like baseball managing games on super famicom, all sorts of titles. (PC engine stacks of 10 for 100 yen)

I think you should collect games that you want to play, you don't need every game for the system. It's not feasible to enjoy a mammoth collection when 95% is junk. I won't tell you how to enjoy your games, but I hunt down old obscure gems and embrace new games too.

  • even when your videos are seen only a couple of hundred times, they are great. keep it up!

  • I know what you mean about the PSP being underrated. I was one of the people that thought PSP had no good games, but I heard that Final Fantasy Tactics and Dracula X were coming, so I bought one. One of the best purchases I ever made, haven't had any trouble finding good games to play.

I also do a lot of random collecting, I'll buy a few SNES games one day, then get a PS3 game the next day. I mainly buy the old stuff because I never got a chance to play those games when I was younger.

  • I can somewhat feel nostalgia for my NES games even though they were made before I was born. I too prefer collecting for older systems than newer ones. And for some reason at the moment I've gotten into Wonderswan collecting. I'm not sure if it's because It's a unique system that no one else has or something but I just love it to death.

  • I like to collect consoles and games mainly due to the fact that I didn't have them when I was younger and now I can afford them, I tend to purchase random games for various consoles not solely targeting on one particular system.

  • Hey, Im the same mainly, but I concentrate on a certain system...

  • I tend to agree - there are plenty of 'new' adventures out there.. I guess the advantage people who were around then have is that while we enjoy modern titles, we have experienced 'lower' standards (older standards) and so will not turn our noses up at these games.. I started with the Vic 20 so I can enjoy games from that era to todays - of course 99% of young people would scoff at those old titles.

  • Okay, if I can figure out why my otherwise great webcam produces horrible video quality (even when set to HD) when attempting to record videos for Youtube I may upload a video reply to this.

You know of my recent Ebay addiction and that I have a collecting obsession bordering on OCD...and now I can add the PC Engine to the list of consoles I must own. The reason? Well, I love videogames, I respect the history of videogames, and I want to own all of it...*sighs*

  • Hey SuperDan88 I did post a video response which has already received several comments, waiting for it to appear with the other video responses, perhaps you have to approve it first?

  • Blazing Lazers is the game that made me get the Turbografx too!

  • New subscriber here. Totally agree with the PSP comment.

I like you choice in retro systems. I've been collecting since 1990. :)

  • Comment part 2: so back in the day never had the chance to get any of those imports, was pricey and i wasnt sure how to send money by mail (remember in the early 90's no internet or paypal) so now i am fllfilling the dream of having those cool games i couldnt get before :)

And video responce, do you really want to bleed your ears with my 3rd rate breoken engrish? xD

  • I think one of the reasons i do collect retro games is nostalgia because i had very good times with friends when i played back then, i do like new games and systems to but i dont know, i think new systems cant beat nostalgia but that's just me.

Second reason is i used to buy EGM (i live in mexico) so getting news of systems that was never sold in mexico 8like the turbografx 16/pc engine) & all the import stuff made me feel interested in them but of course never got ay back in the day

  • i agree, with the price thing, most Xbox games are like £40, yesterday i bought 13 retro games from Gamestation in Oxford, and they cost me under £25

  • I recently purchased the NEC PC Engine! WHY? Simply because it was a machine that i did not grow up with and it also came from a different culture. By collecting these rather than emulators shows the real life of the game rather than just a copy, but a actual peace of art. That is why I collect old games to hold that time and effort put into a game!

  • im 13 and i love mega drive, the games are cheap, they sre chalenging and they look brill, i love mega drive

  • emulation is great but theres nothing like having the actual product.

  • i have a ps3 and dont get me wrong i love it and i love all of the new games coming there amazing love oblivion but theres just something about playing games on the nes or snes that just brings me so much joy i grew up in the 90's i had an amazing childhood and some of my best memories are playing sonic 2 and just being so amazes by it thats why i love retro games because of the memories it brings back.

  • I used to collect like crazy retro games when i came to japan because retro games are really cheap and easy to find here. But i sold all my stuff when i moved, now im collecting sega saturn games,i love sega saturn,it has really really good games,so underrated system.

    Peace.

  • i agree man, the psp is very underrated comapred to the DS, i love my psp way more than i did my DS, just because of what i can do with it (emulators etc :P)

  • hmm so imuh hafta do another video response but it will be a day or so :)

  • Great topic, Video reply coming tomorrow!

  • Good discussion vid matey - I'll try to do a video response later today :)

  • the reason i collect retro games is for the memories i dont know if anyone else does it for this reason but i collect for the memories of me and my brothers huddled around an nes or snes or n64 and sega and playing all night to beat ninja turtles or super mario 64, and the memories of renting a sucky game to only find ourselves playing it and beating it because we already spent the 5 bucks to rent it. so thats why i collect

  • Nope

  • I like to collect genesis games. I have a passion for that system, and it's charm. While I have my set of nostalgic games, I keep getting impressed by it, and look forward to dig deeper on to what that system is really capable of. Including hardware mods.

Also, yeah, lol, I have a guilty pleasure for the crappy games.... damn you shaq-fu. I buy them, but don't play them that often.

  • I would say my reasons are a mixture of yours. It's pretty great to pick up a 3DO, a Jaguar, about 10 games, and extra controllers for less than a fourth of what a Jaguar cost new. Finally getting to try all the games I pined for in my youth.

Other games, like Warcraft 2, have a great effect on my state of mind - the responsibilties and concerns of adulthood are replaced with the more carefree feeling I had when I played it as a teenager. Older games tend to engage my imagination more as well.

  • 5 stars mate!

I have a response video uploading now. :)

    STAY AWESOME!

  • Same thing as you pretty much. Really cant stick to just one system. I prefer retro over modern games because of the nostalgia attached to them. Although I'm mostly attracted to Sega hardware I try to get the quality games for any system. As far back as Atari 2600 to the current gen systems. Your right about PSP being underrated. The new one is gonna be all download only titles unfortunately. Not gonna buy that. I may get a PSP 3000 since I have the original model. You made some great points.

  • I'd say because growing up I missed a LOT of games and systems. I had a few systems, but never more than one at a time and barely any games. I had no money, keeping asking my parents for stuff was a pain in the ass.

I'd say mostly is because I love games and a bit of nostalgia as well. It is like going back in time. It is a lot of fun, even searching for games is fun.

  • i was born in 1972 so i'm old lol. i remember all system launches and games from all systems as they were new. my retro collecting is either to get more for systems i have, or to rebuy systems i no longer have. mainly i collect for saturn. i get only the games i want from the us and japan because i know basically what was released for it, which is true for all systems i collect for.

  • ah man i love the psp theres so many games for it i think its like the ps3 where people just remember the launch where there werent really any and also sonys marketing ive only ever seen like one psp commercial

  • The past 5 years or so I would buy a few mega drive games that I never had the chance to play and wondered what they were like but I have been disapointed with sonic 3 and sonic 3d.

I try to get games that I heard about in a certain genre and then get other games that I missed out on one example being Ristar never playing it but wanting to see what its like.

I can't commit to collecting to one system I just rather have good games for the systems I do have.

  • Some old games are kinda fun and cheap Its good to collect all the classics and the great games of systems

A lot of people do it for the memories but I like playing games i didnt play

I like to buy games for anything i own if its fun technically good then its i like to find bargains and pay a reasonable price i rarely buy a full price game

There is no point in owning crap games they where crap then and crap now and dont deserve your money

  • You bring up awesome points man...Holy Crap...Awesome vid and awesome point.

  • a lot of nice thoughts there bro!

I totally feel ya man, especially

being broke growing up, and not

having games and stuff that other

    kids have : (

  • i have the same views as you for collecting!

  • I focus on 1 system: the n64 it was my first console, i still have it and now i have 162 games for it. my fav being ocarina of time :) the only bad thing is it costs sooo much money! i also like collecting the japanese games. retro is the best!

  • Its kind of like a pokemon game for me. I'll hunt all over the internet for some of the rare stuff, but sometimes buy even the shittiest stuff just for the sake of having it. Just like I do with catching pokemon.

I find it fun to expand my collection and experience all these old games at the same time. Plus its fun to collect video games because unlike with a stamp, or card collection, you can play the things you collect.

  • well emulation just isn't the same because it isn't on the original system and you don't use the original controller and stuff i guess. there is compatibility issues and speed of the game can be different too. the reason you don't collect for just one system is because not all the games on a system are good. yeah i grew up with not much money too. so guess get them because didn't have them int he past too.

  • i usually just collect to play. don't see the point in never playing something or collecting if don't liek it. if i see a game that is cheap and rare but would never play it i won't get it just because it is.
