Many Indians already understand Hindi quite well. Even South Indians know HIndi although they may not prefer to use. But everyone is taught Hindi in India. I know of a lot of people. All the Indian languages have originated from Sanskrit, so it's not hard to learn any other Indian language. Programs can be set up for Indian students and people to encourage them to learn any other regional Indian language only when they are migrating internally from one state to the other.
The idea is to discourage a foreign language n encourage the usage of regional language/s. Hindi is understood by over 1 billion people. Even Urdu speakers (80% of them) can read n write Hindi quite well. Plus, Hindi and other regional languages like Marathi n Gujarati only have 45,000 and 40,000 original words with Hindi having 70,000 original words, so the vocabulary is not vast, unlike English. Plus, all these languages are interrelated. So, it won't be a hard task to learn them

Well actually how is it a rush when the British themselves were promising Dominion status for decades and regneded each time? I saw this documentary many years ago. I do admit that the brits and other colonizers were not good people, but in some cases barbarians. Many Indians already understand Hindi quite well. Even South Indians know HIndi although they may not prefer to use. But everyone is taught Hindi in India. I know of a lot of people. All the Indian languages have originated from Sanskrit, so it's not hard to learn any other Indian language. Programs can be set up for Indian students and people to encourage them to learn any other regional Indian language only when they are migrating internally from one state to the other.

The idea is to discourage a foreign language n encourage the usage of regional language/s. Hindi is understood by over 1 billion people. Even Urdu speakers (80% of them) can read n write Hindi quite well. Plus, Hindi and other regional languages like Marathi n Gujarati only have 45,000 and 40,000 original words with Hindi having 70,000 original words, so the vocabulary is not vast, unlike English. Plus, all these languages are interrelated. So, it won't be a hard task to learn them

It seems to me that by delaying, and delaying and delaying, these civic nationalists got too old and tired to continue playing the leading role. By the late 1940s, civic nationalism gave way to a new, virulent and destructive force of sectarianism. Had the Brits offered Dominion status decades earlier there would of been no fringe sectarian factions.

Ofcourse it was related to external forces. The British had been pursuing divide and rule policies for a long time in the sub continent and even made it a point to issue ''demographic'' reports touting that one or the other of the religious groups was in danger of being non-existent. Hence the British cultivated sectarianism as a way of maintaining command and control.
Dominion status would of brought these all of these states and territorial entities together in a confederation.

Because only the British had the power to make laws, it is natural for the legal ban to come from them. Lakshmi Mittal's steel company is providing another whole lot of jobs to British people. India's Essar runs oil refineries in the UK. I saw this documentary many years ago. I do admit that the brits and other colonizers were not good people, but in some cases barbarians. In many ways they did boost and uplift many of their colonies. It is sad when they show Britain from the present and 50 years ago,. Too bad multiculturalism has dominated Britain. The makers of this documentary tout it, but we have all seen its consequences. I hope Britain and the US can go back to being a white majority, then only there will be peace.

Interesting stock footage and accounts, but all in all I thought a dated and dismissive documentary stressing negative connotations.I think today people are more open in discussing the Empire, and more realistic when assessing it. This program seems dated as a result - I for one find 'multiculturalism' both patronising and counter-productive in our society, and I know I'm not alone. I too see a bright future for Britain, but it is through unity, not diversity that we will achieve a bright future

I disagree with the statement, 'the legacy that we Brits left behind returns to haunt us all'. Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims lived side by side during the Raj...Paitition came about because of power-hungry nationalists within those religions, particularly Muhammad Ali Jinnah, leader of the Muslim League and first Prime Minister of Pakistan. Leaders of such movements like Jinnah pushed for partition. Question is, would such a thing have happened in some shape or form without British rule?
