I think some of the "BEST" TV shows ever.. Timing.. Delivery.. They were the Greats... To this day .. nothing makes me happier that Hearing The "Kingfish" think.. Huuuummmm..... Now Listen Andy...!...
Think about "Martin". He was doing very much the same time of farce that was the measure of "Amos and Andy". His show was very funny. He could do a new version of "Amos and Andy" which would be very successful. There are plenty of black actors today who would make the show work. The original scripts could be used in the time in which they were broadcast or updated. There is nothing wrong with "Amos and Andy". Many people of all backgrounds would get into this show with a better shock of laughs.
@juiuur1 Don't ruin another classic with a clummy remake. They don't know how to properly remake old shows in Holly wood, unless its something like the Addams Family or something that takes place in the era its supposed to be in. They need to get it right.
creators Gosden and Correll were white actors who proposed a series about "a couple of colored characters. The series began on the radio in 1927 under a different name, then transitioned to the name "Amos and Andy" in 1928.
I must say this in an interview and Jesse Jackson said that these actors paved the way for other black actors. There was also George Kirby who said these actors had to go thru the back door so other actors could go thry the front door. It's a shame that we stil have negative stereotypes around and the said thing some black people are happy to call each other n&**(.
True story, Kingfish came home from work at a restaurant and pulled a gun on his real life mother in law whenn he found out she ate his pastrami sandwich in the refrigerator.
the way these people r depicted in these shows tend to make u believe that about people similar to them in real life.Example:if u meet a young black man from the projects u might expect him to act like J.J. Evans from Good Times.
Watching Amos & Andy as a 8 year old in 50s UK I thought like the other kids of my age that these guys were Hilarious,we didnt know any thing about racial predudice we just found these two Black men very comical and LOVED them for it,Seems people are Sooooooo easily offended in this Sad little world today.
Even though I'm white, this was the greastest Sit-Com of all time. I'm 58 yrs old and to this day I miss it. What I would give to have any TV station bring back the reruns of this great show. Xxmass
and "Duffy's Tavern" Irish. Seems they tried it with other ethnic groups and "The Bev. Hillbillies" poking fun at poor rednecks. Then there was the radio show about the Italian immigrant.
@streetsdiciple8 I didn't see it that way in the 50's and I don't now. It's just funny stuff. Enjoy the comedy and don't think about it too much. All comedy makes fun of someone.
I remember watching Amos n Andy when I was a kid. I counn't wait for it to come on. I never thought the show was demeaning to blacks. It was just great comedy. I guess early PC did it in. What a shame.
One of the great ironies of our time is that 'Amos N' Andy' was deemed to be 'racist' in the 1960's and has largely been censored since. Sad to say, I think if most Americans in 2006 were asked what is the first thing they think of with regards to black entertainment, images of rap culture come to mind. I ask you - what is more demeaning? 'Amos N' Andy' or 'Gangsta' Rap?'
This kind humor is bad if the actors are black but fine if the cast is made up of southern whites (Beverly hillbillys) Oh what a great show, I miss it.
Amos & Andy was the funniest radio/TV show of all time. Modern TV pales in comparison. And not the slightest hint of anything racist. You have to watch/listen to know.
Actually, I remember hearing that Jesse Jackson LIKES Amos 'n Andy! And why shouldn't he? The (black) characters on the show dress nicely, live in decent looking apartments and when there's a bad guy, he's usually WHITE! :)
Contrary to modern opinion, there was never a mention of race in the "Amos 'n' Andy" TV episodes and there were never any racial situations like there are in many modern TV shows.
Guts for what? Lynched for what? You have 2 eyes. Do you see anything in this clip that would offend anyone? My dad is the 3rd man from the left in the clip. He received awards from the NAACP for his work. He was selected by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to be a part of their ARCHIVE OF AMERICAN TELEVISION who has given us permission to put his ARCHIVE interview on our website -http://www.ebonyshowcase.org
My dad was a pioneer who made a profound contribution to film, theater and television; and I know firsthand that the actors in the "Amos 'n' Andy" show demanded that they be presented with dignity and respect; for example, the writers of the show wanted to depict them in a raggedy house with sloppy housekeeping and pots and pans on the table; the actors refused to be depicted like that.. they said that no one that they knew lived that way. They knew that they had a responsibility to society.
That's not, at all, difficult to believe. The Amos 'n' Andy characters, no doubt, would have been depicted in that manner if someone had not intervened. Heck, "Sandford and Son" was made in the 70s and look at how the main characters were portrayed. I would imagine, that "Blacks," would be much more offended by THAT show.
Yes Amos n Andy was a great show. Those actors were real pioneers and great actors and entertainers.I am happy to hear your Father was among them and he was honored. They all deserve to be honored. That was a difficult period of time and they exhibited great dignity.God bless them.
we need to get in the ears of cbs/paramount to get this show officially released on dvd
it would be a fine tribute to the actors involved in this show and we would get ali of the episodes released too and paramount would make a ton of money from this release i'm sure
Go to 222.education 2000i.com to find a Delux Boxed Colletion of "The Amos 'n Andy Show", 44 episodes. Enjoy!

munkenmedguran 2 years ago
the original A/A were white, these guys on tv
were black actors. Matter of fact Amos's real name
was Alvin Childress, Andy was I think, Spencer Williams,
and the Kingfish was Tim Moore. All veteran actors
from the black stage and movies.
