I'm also amazed that the german train was able to travel around with no problems such as the size e.g in the stations with the steps meeting the platform properly.. amazing. I thought there'd be a difference. What about the power? The old ICE1 shown here ran on 15KVolt at 16.75 Hz... what is the overhead power in the US? Was the ICE converted at all for that??
@trident3b From what I recall, It had it's pantographs replaced, stronger headlights installed, different train safety equipment installed, electrical adaptations... ICE 1 trains were very large by European standards, but not by US standards. Still, adaptations cost Siemens about 8 million for that one train...
very nice, pity the US didn't buy it. The ICE3 and Valero would look great over there too. I didn't realize the rails in the US were laid out to handle 136 mph (some 217kph) as seen. Nice. Watch "ICE erstmals im Eurotunnel"... Germany is giving France a hard time!
@trident3b Only the NEC is built for those speeds. Top speed 150 mph and only with the Acela Express. The rest of America is restricted to 79 mph with a couple of spots that allow 110 mph.
Wow, thanks for posting this! I wanted to ride the ICE when it was over here, but I was a poor student heading off to college at the time. I finally got to ride the ICE 3 over in Germany in 2003!
