I have a Hofner Icon Beatle bass, along with a Fender P-Bass, and I love playing it. It has a deep, pure, organic sound, and I play it straight into a bass amp without pedals. I also love its light weight and easy playability. The only thing I have against it is that the strings are closer together than me P-Bass, which makes playing fingerstyle harder, so I use a pick. All in all a great bass. Maybe someday I'll have the money to get me a 500/1!
@theyodaclub The song is mainly in D minor and the minor third of D is F, which is used a lot for the main riff and through the song.
And for Abbey Road (the one with Come Together for those who don't know) Paul used his Rickenbaker like he had done in several other "post Rubber Soul" records.
@BeanTheCoffee Nope, Chuck Testa... that's the chinese version, I've never tried it, but it's supposedly ok. McCartney uses that $3500 german piece of beauty.
ok, i got a violin style bass guitar, i didnt have enough money to get a hofner, so i got a cheap one, the brand is " De Rosa " i have never heard of this brand and cant find anything about it. can anyone give me info about this??
@Ajhkatsumoto I Have had a Hofner Ignition, Contemporary, and the vintage. Ignition is the 'lowest' quality one, but still makes the coolest bass sound ever. Your De Rosa one is basically a mimic of the ignition. So its very good! I'd suggest buying some pyramid flatwound strings to max the performance. good playing friend.
@theyodaclub The 'F' he hits is longer than normally on his Hofner; therefore, it's on a different bass. I've also read in many books that it was recorded on his Ric.
Haha it takes time :D, it doesn't matter really. It's not like if you know more songs, you are more of a beatie. No :P, just if you love them, you love them, simple. :) cheers
the hofner is probably the worst playing and sounding bass ever made. it was a mediocre bass to start with. it make a dull thud. paul sounded much better after he go the rick 4001.
This is an awsome bass and if you ever get a chance to own one you will change you're mind.
I do agree with you on the Rick 4001. I just saw Paul this last summer & I was hoping he would break out the Ricky for the Venus & Mars tracks. He just used the Hofner.
@dbrowdie I have had 2 hofners. One was a 1968, and the other a 70s model. They are junk. I have played a 1977 Music Man Sting Ray through a 1972 Ampeg SVT with an 810 and 215 cabinet pair for 20 + years.

such a beautiful bass. i can only afford the contemporary series for now. i'm going to get the teacup knobs though, any one know how much the teacups are?
@Nymun Paul used a hofner for everything up until Revolver. Then, he got his Rickenbacker 4001, and used it up till the Let it Be sessions, and started to play his hofner at that point. Also, he played a J-Bass for some White Album songs (ie Dear Prudence).
yo dawg, I heard you like watching youtube videos, so we put a youtube video in your youtube video so you can watch youtube while you watch youtube.

Paul definitely used a Hofner in Come Together, in fact i'm pretty sure he had moved back to the Hofner to record Let It Be and Abbey Road

You're saying it like "Hoof-ner". It's Hofner. Not Hoofner.

When he plays the bass at 2:00, is it equipped with tapewound strings or is it my idea?
CubeableGame 4 months ago
@CubeableGame I'd assume that they are La Bella flat wounds, because McCartney uses them and they come standard with the German Hofners.
ShadowPheonix12 4 months ago
@ShadowPheonix12 You are probably right. Flatwound strings are awesome! I use them exclusively.

I am going to sell my guitar and earn enough money to buy the Hofner Bass.
I'm not much of a bassist, either - mostly guitar.
