And a coloratura is not a soprano that can sing higher, its a soprano who is traditionally cast in highly virtuosic roles, and while mariah has a lot of control over her high notes (in this period anyway), she's no virtuoso, not in the classical sense anyway. I highly doubt she could sing queen of the night, for example.

I still hear her today singing as a soprano, although it lacks in power, because of ageing and lifestyle.
This is probably the most vocally exhausting song for someone with a voice like Mariah and she sings it so effortlessly, she is a pop/R&B singer but she def goes beyond her rivals and/or others in her category!

For lack of the denotative meaning of the word, a virtuoso is someone has great skill in the art of singing(later changed to great at really the arts, but I'm sure you know that). Whoever said that needs some education in music. She's obv a contralto now. Back then she was an alto. But some folks like to call her a Lyric soprano. But I will say she does have colortura skill. @alastarification Speaking voice is not an indicator for singing type. Furthermore, the term 'alto' is not applied to individual singers, but a section in a choir. I can't think of a single contralto who can access whistle register. She is mezzo-soprano.

@rekupp speaking voice is definitely a key indicator..hence toni braxton's voice..i play the alto saxophone......so i know the definition of alto...furthermore Mariah said that she was an alto not a soprano.its in an article..her voice is just too deep for soprano....she has a serious range....also just because you dont know an alto with a whistle register doesnt mean anything i dont know many sopranos with a whistle register..that register is special...to any voice. @alastarification Calling someone an alto outside of choral music is erroneous. This is not a term used for individual singers; the terms are contralto, mezzo-soprano, and soprano. Some women talk at the top of their chest voices, and vice versa. Her voice got huskier because of nodules, and furthermore, her healthiest register has always been head voice (as well as whistle register). I never said she was a soprano, I said she was a mezzo-soprano.

@rekupp and @alastarification Mariah Carey in the beginning of her career was definitely a mezzo-soprano but by 1999-2000 (Rainbow era) her singing tone dropped, her comfort range was no longer those big belts, her lower register became more full and rich. from the rainbow era onward her voice lowered to a contralto. so both of you are right, she once was a mezzo-soprano but listen to any of her music or live performances of the last decade and its clear shes now an contralto.

@dafuture93 Her voice didn't lower from time, it got huskier because of nodules which cause incomplete chord closure. Nodules are the reason why her natural voice is airy.

Elton John was a tenor in his prime but is now stated to be a baritone, years of singing and performing can just naturally alter the voice over time.

@rekupp you do need to hear your voice ...in order to understand it...1 page out of a book is not a equivalent to a chapter. this is not a voice of any kind of soprano. Plain and simple voice is way too low. Very close toni braxton and plus SHE SAID HER VOICE IS AN ALTO....PLAIN AND SIMPLE. So i am only repeating the OWNER of this voice you keep saying you know. @Mcvideos92 Nodules have nothing to do with whistle register. Nodules give her the breathy voice, that is all. Plenty of singers can do whistle register (Yma Sumac, Shanice, Shoshana Bean, etc).

@alastarification: If you look up on google you will find out that Mariah is a Soprano coloratura. She might not be a natural one, however she hits all the notes a soprano coloratura would hit. WH is a mezzo-soprano and Celine is a lyric soprano. But because her vocal range is big she can go to very low notes and also to extremely high notes (coloratura). I still hear her today singing as a soprano, although it lacks in power, because of ageing and lifestyle.
