Lets be honest, if the punks had really hated their predecessors they'd have not been interested in rock at all and not even bothered to attempt to learn instruments. As a teenager at the time you'd go round mates houses who were into punk or elder brothers were, look at their record collections and see it full of Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd & prog Rock stuff. The ones who got seriously into punk were the ones who took their music seriously and were pretty much musical snobs.
The Rolling Stones did some really good tunes but technically the best musicians to ever play in the the Stones were Mick Taylor, Charlie Watts, and Ian Stewart, the "6th Stone". Mick Taylor had to hold back his ability in order to fit into the Stones simplicity. I've always loved ZZ Top from the very beginning however it seems that they've lost their way and have become too commercial. It seems to have become all about the money. But I respect Billy Gibbons as a guitarist. Theres none better!
@margovallen The Stone's' simple mindedness stands in stark contrast to the genius of Billy Gibbons and his unbelievable presentations of the min7sus4 scale. Taylor tried to play a 12 tone row on Time Waits For No One but Keith said it was too complex to which Taylor replied "why are you holding me back?, I'm trying to make this simple song into something more profound....maybe you and Mick can try some flat five subs in the bridge?"
Richards isn't fit to string Billys guitars. I saw the stones on the urban jungle tour. I've never seen such an overated, corporate juke box, pile of crap as their performance. Saw zz top on wed and they were blinding.
Very nice of Billy Gibbons to be such a nice dude, and admit that Keith could be a guitar partner in Rock and Roll crime, with a Pistol! Rock and Roll shouldn't own an ego in this day in age, for only the elder statesmen made it...
@taylloraid: Yea, they knew who they had to put down in the media, to make some room for themselves, while secretly be admirers. Such an old, cheap trick. Like a DJ I knew in the seventies, who said he wasn't interested in anything that came before '77 and nowadays is admiring Bob Dylan like nobody else.
Steve Jones is a fatso, so what. he is still a fan of music, shown by his need to get an eBay-Ready signed CD case from Billy (the end of the clip). Oh to be a pimp of other's warez.
Just saw them in Solomon,Maryland this past weekend. Their show is slamming for sure. They played outside. The temp was around 74 degrees. It was an awesome outside show.
oh hell yeah, and freedom for all the Mexican Political Prisoners and Mumia and Peltier, ...MINISTRY dude Al says that ZZ are the greatest american rock band...tooo many moments to pick the best...SHE'S JUST KILLIN ME, suck my blood...the ZZs la Grange cans still be heard every night at block parties in Iztapalpa Mexico City...tuff tuff tuff as it gets...DVD send me
I think Billy gets all the attention he wants, who wants to be surronded by star struck people all day long, no one. Hes a private guy, with a classy attitude, and he shares plenty of himself with us all, and for that I gotta say Thanks Mr Gibbons, just got paid is one of my favorite tunes to cover. Would also love the DVD of this is it released yet ???
There are many many fans the UK side of the pond who would want to see the film. ZZ Top and Billy are my heroes and my inspiration - Please release the DVD now.

I thought Steve Jones & his contemporaries described the Stones & ZZ Top as "boring old farts"? And now he's best buddies with them?
Shocking. At this rate we'll see something even worse, such as Johnny Rotten advertising butter on TV.........

You are so right. In fact I believe Keith knows this to be true. Billy is a genius. He must have been smoking crack on that radio show.
