Shinkendo is the closest thing to real fight with a sword, so the practitioners of kendo, kenjutsu, iaido, iaijutsu, and other styles shoud learn from this video, rather than criticise
You assume an awful lot. I don't see anything justifying claim that this style is THE closest thing 2 real sword fight. Seen many teachers in many styles of sword do pretty much the same thing, with slight variations according 2 style. But then I've been doing this 12 yrs longer than uv been alive. But u r correct - people should not criticize. It's an excellent style & I've great respect 4 it & Obata-Sensei.
Wheres your established proof of the fact? Shinkendo is an amalgamation of other iai/batto/ken schools. Don't believe me? Obata had dan ranking in Toyama Ryu before Shinkendo was founded. Establish where you think Shinkendo would prepare you better for a sword fight, than say, Toyama Ryu
I agree with rollingbrick. There are many styles that represent "a real fight". Can students from other styles learn from Shinkendo? Yes. Can Shinkendo also learn from other styles? Yes. Shinkendo is a very good style and I also have respect for it.
I'll be starting ShinKendo next week, I've gone and watched several lessons and even been given books by the teacher to look through, but I was just wondering, if you know that is, about the Gi. It seems to be fairly thick, is that true? and the teachers "Pants" (for a lack of a better word) has anyone worn those that you know of? or yourself? them look as if they'ed be annoying to wear. Anyway, thanks for uploading the video. could you reply to me via message? thanks.
The gi comes in several thicknesses. You can get a karate gi which is lighter, or a judo gi which is heavier. The pants are called a Hakama. They are actually quite comfortable.
differences in gi is because in some martial arts it takes a lot more stress. if you're being thrown around like in aikido then if you have a thin gi it will tear up easily.
shinkendo you could do quite well with a thin gi, there's no throwing.
as for the hakama, it's easy to get used to and once you have it's comfortable. for shinkendo it's important when you start using a Iaito or Shinken, so it's firm at your side.
I think this is one of the better shinkendo video's on youtube. simply because it shows something of nearly every aspect of shinkendo done by a really good teacher.
Having just been to the yearly seminar in Hungary I must say that I'm very impressed by Roland Lajos Sensei and his students.
the difference is that kendo is a sport wich is practiced with shinai's tournements and so on, i think everybody knows kendo so no need to explain more. shinkendo (which means the way of the real sword) is a style created by obate where you learn a kind of mixture (no offense!!!) of the koryu's obata has learned.
So in very simple words.
kendo - a sport with sportweapons and sportgear.
shinkendo - a school where you learn to fight with a real sword.
i actually do karate at the same dojo in Lt but i have to say that kendo seem a bit more intense in their combat practice. but i don't know anything of shinkendo so please don't take any offense.
Shinkendo is a Gendai Kenjutsu, quite a unique beast of its own, meaning that it is a practical art of the sword developed in the post meiji era. Modern swordfighting, without a competitive aspect, developed during a time of peace.
@kiddReige: Yes, the Pronounciation is Shin-Ken-do. Shin meaning "true or right or pure", Ken meaning "sword", and Do meaning "way". Kendo means "Sword way" I suppose, and Shinkendo is like "True sword way".
I study too Shinkendo in Québec. It's a wonderfull arts one of the most open minded I know. I saw Obata a day and he is a impressive teacher.:P Sorry for my poor english hehe and have fun to all Shinkendo students.
PS: You never draw a real sword unless you intend to kill ? I think a Shinken is not a weapon, the person behind is a weapon the Shinken is just a tool.
Way to go. I studied for two years with Mr. & Mrs. Obata at Honbu, but had to suspend my studies once I graduated. I plan to return once my career and schedule has been solidified and/or more predictable.
Thanks for posting this, its nice to see others taking advantage of the benefits of Shinkendo, and Aikibujutsu.
What the hell do you mean with "you never draw a real sword unless you intend to take life"??? Cut the crap dude, google 'tameshigiri'. You're probably honest about it, but sorry to burst your bubble: that´s bullshit.
What the piss is this? Looks like someone got a katana for thier birthday and "made" this up. You never draw a real sword unless you intend to take life. This dude is cornier than the music.
Um...you just made yourself look like a real asshole...
"Shinkendo"...wikipedia it...
...and at that...read all of the five core parts of Shinkendo. *pay attention especially to Tameshigiri* What we're learning is not piss...
You need to watch your manners and learn to respect other artforms.
P.S. I would like to see you use a katana and make that clean of a cut, at that speed, and see how you do. Only then will I take back any offense I gave you.
Typical response from a mall ninja who never handled anything but a wall hanger sword purchased from a flea market. If you are learning to fight and cut with a blade it stands to reason that you would wield one in practice. It's obvious you have no real martial experience.
wtf man, cut the crap. you obviously know nothing about swordplay. myself, i am not in Shinkendo or Kendo. but I am in the Korean form called Kumdo (which is the same style. it just uses Korean terms). this is what is known as a "Demonstration"
I've watched Kumdo classes. What I saw was Kendo but in Korean the word is Kumdo. I didn't notice any difference, but I only visited the school a 1/2 dozen times. Is there much of a difference between Kumdo and Kendo?
there isnt much difference between Kumdo and Kendo. in sparring, the distance between you and your opponant are closer in Kumdo than in Kendo. Kumdo is also Blue and White in sparring, as opposed to Kendo's Red and White.
why do i have 3 thumbs down? I wasn't dissing the video, just illumined1, the guy i responded to.
looks too flashy to me O.o...

I was just going through these!
It's neat to watch these videos right after training. Also, you can use them as a reference for doing the kata correctly.
