I recently got Wacoms Intuos4 tablet and started drawing digitally. Im learning as I go, but I have a question.

Nice work btw. Love your drawings and ty for sharing it :)
I wonder how you use layers. Do you use a lot of differnet??? what is IN your differnet layers?? are you just layering it as you go or are you more defined?? like "layer hair", "layer helmet"... i just ask myself...

@blueberrypie52 You can do layer like that but you will end up with tons of layers. This is speedpainting, not illustration so less would be more efficient. ;-) Check your inbox for useful articles and tips.

Hi, I have a question, how big is diference between painting with a mause and tablet, i mean im just startin my journey with digital painting and i dont fell too good with spendin few hundred dolars on it now, so is it possible to get effect that is at least close to this (sry for my english)???

Arm or hand is in a wrong position. Try to set your hand and arm in the positions you drawn here. You should check where arm muscles begins and ends on bones. ;p

@0912131569 xia draws every day, works as an artist, goes to life drawing class, he works hard to progress in what he does. You can try to debate if art is art in digital media, but it won't work. It IS still art, its still as valid as painting. There is talent and years of practice in it. Digital artists dont abandon the pencil and paint, but dont need it to create art either. Davinci would have used computers if they were available, he was using the latest cutting edge technology available.
It's funny you'd say that, cause I used traditional art forms for 20 years before I started using photoshop in 1998, and I love using CG tools. I've seen CG art that rivals any traditional medium, but it doesn't tend to get the same level of respect.
Use whatever tool that you're comfortable with, and in one thing you're right: the tool cannot make up for technique. It's the hand, mind, and heart of the artist working together that makes great art.
@Tintifax84 yer.. he kinda did the arm wrong.. The top part, the shoulder, wouldnt be in that position in relation to the bottom part of the arm and hand holding the hammer...
To me, the anatomy of that right arm is twisted, and the elbow should be bent more hefting that heavy hammer.
But anyways, my question is this, what resolution do you paint in? Do you always use a certain size canvas, or do you use something that's the resolution of the monitor (or however it's to be applied)? ...twice the resolution? 3 times?
@Drakaran I always struggle with what resolution to work in also. For print I am told 300 dpi is best. but even just a 5x7 at 300 dpi Makes a good computer slow down, especially using complex brushes like blur. Im no pro like Xia, but when I practice daily, I just go for 72 dpi. Problem is, if I like it, I have to re-paint to make it a print.
@sprattoo Have you tried onOne Fractal Pro? I'd think something like that would at least save some repainting... more just have to touch up.
Are you using the 64 bit version? The computer I work on has 8 gig of ram and a phenom 945 processor and even the new "real" brushes only really get sluggish after about 100 pixel size (90 px for mixer brush) on 2550x3300 32 bit. In 8 bit mode I can use a mixer at 150px mixer and 200px regular brush before it starts getting sluggish. If I was
@Drakaran yes I have 64 bit version, 8 gb ram, dual core processor. I just upgraded to a 1 gb video card, which did help a little. When I go to throw in a background wash is when I get lagged the most.. like with large brushes. I have to say CS4 lags much less than my Corel painter program. I will check out Fractal pro to see what it does. I have settled for working at 200 dpi for a happy medium, but work larger than my desired print size, this seems to help too.
I'm really enjoying watching your creative process, how you try different things and not hesitate to change if it's not quite to your liking. You're very confident with your marks. I think that's the advantage of digital illustration, it's easy to correct so there's less hesitation leading to a quicker more fluid drawing. Keep up the great work.
I really like the messy painterly non linear style of this. It`s something I`ve been wanting to do in my work, but tend to always get caught up in details and lose the overall focus.
You never really zoomed in, so have just never really done that for was that something that you developed, where you just began to zoom in less and less?
@teepott992 Good question! :) Zoom in could be really bad for me (I don't know if it happens to anyone else) cuz I would get caught up in detail and noodling it...then when I zoom out...it's not what I really want in the pic. So I try to keep the consistency of overall image and paint the image as a whole as if it were a traditional piece. So the bigger your monitor that can have the whole image up, the better. Maintain balance the whole image as you progress. Zoom in only when needed.
@teepott992 Most of your major artists will tell you its bad to zoom in until your in the final stage of adding fine details, until you reach that stage, it's better to do it zoomed out so your forced to work more general, with less details. You tend to work more on details when zoomed in, and an early stage work, you should really be focusing on the structure of the image, and not the fine details, those come after your composition and everything else is figured out.
what's the most efficient and least-destructive way to make relatively big area darker or lighter?
I saw you use a big brush to push things towards the dark or make them brighter.
I know when things are rough in the beginning you can probalby use the normal brush made bigger to make big areas darker/lighter but what about later when the painting is more rendered? what are teh best ways to make big areas darker/lighter then?
if anyone knows any tips on this it'd be much appreciated thanks.
@OmnipotentO Get 70% dark as drawing and shadow first to create shape and main shadow. Then work your way out from there. But the more you do, the more methods you will find that comfortable with you. Good luck. Thanks for the reply for the guys. :)
@katsinhatsx0x0 "he uses a wacom tablet they're industry standard for digital painting and concept art"
I use a Wacom Bamboo Fun, it's fairly simple, but it works and wasn't too ridiculously expensive (2 years ago for about £80). Most reviews and people are going to advise you to look at the Wacom models.
@katsinhatsx0x0 look for Wacom brand. their cheapest models (Bamboo i think they're called) are around $80-$90 USD and they're quite good in my opinion. well worth the investment
Did you draw it from the same view the whole time without zooming in or out?

If I was
Drakaran 1 year ago
@sprattoo the regular brushes (pre cs5) I can get up to about 500px before they start lagging at 2550x3300 8bit.
Drakaran 1 year ago

You never really zoomed in, so have just never really done that for was that something that you developed, where you just began to zoom in less and less?
teepott992 1 year ago
@teepott992 Good question! :) Zoom in could be really bad for me (I don't know if it happens to anyone else) cuz I would get caught up in detail and noodling it...then when I zoom out...it's not what I really want in the pic. So I try to keep the consistency of overall image and paint the image as a whole as if it were a traditional piece. So the bigger your monitor that can have the whole image up, the better. Maintain balance the whole image as you progress. Zoom in only when needed.

@idrawgirls Awesome advice. Very true. Great painting!
Slantze 1 year ago
@idrawgirls not just you i hear that from a lot of artists. They avoid zooming in most cases.
Shydrow 1 year ago
@teepott992 Most of your major artists will tell you its bad to zoom in until your in the final stage of adding fine details, until you reach that stage, it's better to do it zoomed out so your forced to work more general, with less details. You tend to work more on details when zoomed in, and an early stage work, you should really be focusing on the structure of the image, and not the fine details, those come after your composition and everything else is figured out.

How can someone draw with this level of skill without the digital art program you use. I can never draw nearly this good even on one of my good days.

what's the most efficient and least-destructive way to make relatively big area darker or lighter?
I saw you use a big brush to push things towards the dark or make them brighter.
I know when things are rough in the beginning you can probalby use the normal brush made bigger to make big areas darker/lighter but what about later when the painting is more rendered? what are teh best ways to make big areas darker/lighter then?
if anyone knows any tips on this it'd be much appreciated thanks.
OmnipotentO 1 year ago
@OmnipotentO Get 70% dark as drawing and shadow first to create shape and main shadow. Then work your way out from there. But the more you do, the more methods you will find that comfortable with you. Good luck. Thanks for the reply for the guys. :)

@OmnipotentO
Using a darken layer(above the layer you want darkened) or an overlay layer can work pretty well!

MemoriesAreLost 1 year ago
@katsinhatsx0x0 look for Wacom brand. their cheapest models (Bamboo i think they're called) are around $80-$90 USD and they're quite good in my opinion. well worth the investment
