  • To newbies....stay away from the SIU, they are all that is bad about unions check out the SUP much more transparency!!

  • both my parents were seamen im looking to be one 2

  • Im still in high school and i would really like a chance to sail the world i just dont know what steps i should take to do so. any help or web sight suggestions would be helpful.

  • @19Dieppa91 Join the navy !

  • @mwillblade lol ezr said thn done ive tryed but there is alot of bs atm. but if that shit does open up for me then i will.

  • Stay away from SIU, get your MMC, TWIC and start applying. The school is a waste of time. Why go to school for 6 months or more when you can start earning money right away. I'd rather train a real greenhorn than someone from any school

  • @tugboat1995 the school is a good thing if you can't afford to pay for all the BS. Then, if you have half a brain, go for your 3rd's after you get 1080 days

  • ABs r the officers best friend ;-P

  • Looking at the comments I see this is what a few guys do on their time off.... Sit around drinking beer making drunken comments. LOL Check out S.I.U. trainee program if interested in going to sea

  • Able seamen is very important for reproduction.

  • i'm A/B seaman,from Peru,travel around the world for 10 yrs,working in tanker's ships,container's ships,general cargo ships,on diferents companies,peruvian's,greek's,spain's,i starting when i have 18 y.o.,i have now 35,greetings seaman brother's.

  • I sailed as a Deck Officer and I never heard of "reading a cargo hold." Is this an uncorrected mistake?

  • Same thing. Able Seaman = Able-Bodied Seaman. I don't know why they dropped it, but both terms are used generically for the same position now. In practice aboard ship, they are usually just referred to as "AB's". And yes, it is still one step up from an OS.

  • What's this?

We always called them Able-0bodied Seamen.

That was a step up from Ordinary Seamen.

    When did that change?
