Story goes that it was someone's home, moored up in Salterforth, couldn't keep up with the bills and license fees, British waterways took the boat and impounded it at Barrowford locks, not even giving them the chance to remove their belongings...
Last I heard of it though, it was saved from the BW boat crusher as was being restored and refitted, so it didn't end up suffering the same fate as the Norman boats next to it...
@twocvbloke Darn shame for the people who owned it. Even not being able to keep up the costs, that means selling it asap i would think. My self and new wife are gonna be buying a narrowboat soon and liveing in it full time. Much cheaper, nicer way of life. Thay cost a bomb.
I wouldn't recommend it, unlike with houses, taking a boat is theft of property, and no matter whether you claim squatters rights, you would have zero rights and would be removed and arrested if caught... :(
Shame though, there are plenty of boats like this that have been either abandoned or taken by BW and are just wasting away... :(
Oh the narrowboat is salvageable, it's still floating as far as I can tell, it's just the windows and doors that need replacing/repairing aswell as some external trim and fittings that are missing (used to have a chimney and TV aerial, aswell as bow and stern ropes), and the inside just needs refitting, but it would need to be surveyed of course... :)
As for the GRP boats, who knows, BW will probably chop them up... :(
Yep, fibreglass in the water will not be good for wildlife, or even the appearance of the water, and thinking about it, those boats, if not too badly water damaged, could probably be refloated and refurbished, as I had a thought that they probably sank due to rainfall and the lack of a bilge pump or batteries, it's just that they look terrible now, and once were probably very nice boats (I'm not the GRP cruiser sort myself, but still)... :(
Ah, I couldn't tell you the difference between a springer and a josher, all these different names for boats!!! :S
From the info I have got from someone on a canal forum, the owner used to live on the boat at Salterforth, and when BW took the boat away, he was made homeless, all his possessions left on the boat, so he was left with nothing but the clothes on his back... :(
But that said, he was in financial difficulty and couldn't pay the licence fees, so in the end, BW did what they did... :(

@gregfereday
I don't know, I haven't been up by the canal for a while, so if there are any, I wouldn't know about it...
As for "rewarding" finding abandoned or impounded boats, is that even legal? ;)

A sad sight for us Norman owners.
To think all those boats were someones pride and joy once .
Bw will wait till the boats have made an enormous environmental problem ! Then multiply it by cutting them up in the water !

By the way, which one's the Norman? :S
twocvbloke 2 years ago
All 3 Cruisers.
2x Norman 23's
1x Norman 20
Bw will only chop them up as there value is under £1K
The Narrowboat should have a future unless it is torched or sinks.
Mariners are full of boats which nobody seem to go near , yet someone is paying the mooring.
There's a thought is there a marina nearby ?
Could be mooring fee's have not been paid , so the boat was evicted to the towpath ?
I've seen it done near me by D,M,B,C. they just push them over to the towpath and tie them up.
