Not sure why I feel the need to correct this, but Makos aren't the fastest fish.  Sailfish are actually the fastest, clocked at approximately 68 mph for short bursts. The shortfin mako has been clocked at 46 mph. Marlin and wahoo are also both faster than the shortfin mako. That being said, the mako is a very impressive predator.

Common argument. it is nearly impossible to measure because of the constant work of current in the ocean. Current speed changes constantly and switches directing, as the tides are always flowing from high to low to high and so on. Makos, sailfish, barracuda and other streamlined pelagics always seem to be top contenders.
