  • Why the argument? 300 Spartan or 301 Spartan, who cares it happened it shaped what we are today simple

  • The remaining allies were sent home by the Spartans on the third day of the battle, when it became clear that the Persians had outflanked the Greeks.

  • Herodotus; and Blandford: Thermopolae Battle for the West:-

    1. The path used by the Persians was well known.

    2. The path was guarded by the Phocians - not mentioned in the film.

    3. The 900 Helots who died with their masters is not noted

    4. The 700 Thespians died with the Spartans.

    5. Many of the 400 Thebans surrendered.

6.. The two Spartan survivors, Panties and Aristothemus, were held in contempt; so the one hung himself and the other redeemed himself by dying at the battle of Platea.

  • @elitespecforce u fail u dont know what ur talking about the spartans had lamalar armor which wss underneathe their chest plates and he had there (hoplon) which was their spear and the xphos which was there sword

  • The Greeks actually lost about 10,000 men at this battle. Nobody bothers with the Thespians - far more numerous - who shared the last stand with the Spartans. Nobody bothers with the Thebans who were so frightened of their allies that they waited until the last Spartan died and then surrendered.

  • @14067913 : History is not imagination or interpretation but facts.

At the beginning 10,000 soldiers from different city-states joined the Spartans. When Leonidas saw the vast Persian army, he knew the outcome. According to the Spartan way (TAN OR EPI TAN -Return Victorious with it or dead heroe on it (the shield) another traditional way as well)) and asked the rest of the Hellines to return and defend their homes. The 1000 Thespians did not leave but defended their back. The 300 were 300 !

  • Well the persisks wasnt more cowardish than the wars are today, and leonidas made a turtle in defense but it's not cowardish it's survivalish!! Shmock...

  • GAY MUCH

  • ths plakas tainia apo aftes pou gurize averta h cinecitta!!!thn eixa dei polu mikros k me eixe sunarpasei!!vevaia einai gemath anakriveies opws oti eferan tetoio oplismo.kaneis spartiaths den efere teoia varia panoplia k den polemouse me xlamuda rwmaikh....

  • At the end of the day, it shows the cowardice of the persian empire - the fact that they needed to finish off the Spartans with archers.

  • @riffmagos

    And thousands more soldiers too.

  • you're thinking about the testudo or the tortoise some thing that the romans used quite effectively for the uses you state.

  • True

  • i like this movie but my favorite movie ever is the 2007 300

  • the truth is that Leonidas fell and the last 30 spartans made a cycle with their bodies around him to protect his body and the persian troops killed them from distance with spears and arrows!

  • If I had to die with a group guys I hope they would be men like this.

  • R.I.P 300+ heroes!

  • Comment removed

  • dont forget that in the modern the spartans had like 1000 archers and others

  • and very inaccurate too. the Spartans never charged anyone. the point of the phalanx was to hold them off not to head in and die...so new one wins!

  • Actually, the Phalanx charger for the last 190 meters or so to overrun the enemy. They would start slowly and run all out the last 30 meters, all the while keeping their cohesion. The Spartans devised this tactic, yet other Greeks soon imitated them.

  • excuse me, but what did i say that was wrong and you corrected? i don't remember

  • It was not "wrong", I only specified. The phalanx did charge the enemy, hoplites would not only keep their ground so that enemies die on after another on a pike wall.

One of the best historians about this éra, Victor Davis Hanson, compared phalanx fighting to rugby melee, with weapons ;)

  • @hulkmaniac019 wrong the spartans attacked alot. the idea of the phalanx was to smash the opposing line by concentrating the greatest amount of force against the weakest part of the enemy line. read herodotus the spartans did attack the persian line in an attempt to kill xerxes and retreated after leonidas was killed and most of their weapons were broken. the persians were so afraid of them even in their battered state that they finished them off with a barrage of arrows

  • @hmldjr I was told the phalanx was to block enemy arrows and to protect from incoming attacks. Not attack lol

  • @hulkmaniac019

Well it's like shields all around with spears sticking out to protect against cavalry and rushing soldiers.

Basically the turtle but MUCH better.

  • better actors my ass too. doesn't even depict the spartans as they should be portrayed. they were ripped and extreme fighters. the only props i give it is that it ends it correctly. leonidas fell first and they retrieved his body until the last spartan fell

  • I fucking hate it when people exadurate the story

I am goin to be a film director in a couple of years and i'm going to do a movie about the spartans

  • if they would charged like in the old movie the battle would be lost since the first wave...the persians had archers ...

  • @BlackSabbathmad the new film is based on a graphic novel and that is why it is so inacurate

  • @BlackSabbathmad The modern day movie was based off a comic, which was in turn, based on the real event, just adjusted to someone's personal view on it. It's SUPPOSED to be like that in the modern movie, moron.

  • @BlackSabbathmad u fail,in the true story spartan warrior were fighting nude, they only have an helmet and they're red mantle, that's it,no chestplate,no speedo!!!

  • I don't want it to be realistic. I like energy and action. The acting has much more raw emotion in 300. This guys too posh and laid back. The real Leonidas was brutal and more manly than this toff.

  • @BlackSabbathmad Actually the 300 spartans didn't wear any clothing in history apart from their capes. Much better acting in the modern 300 and fight scenes in the modern movie were closer to real then this.

  • farros kai andria kai pisth gia th patrida

  • This movie was indeed filmed in Greece and not Spain, hence the thank you to the Greek monarchs and government for letting them film there.

  • there were 1 million persians but others say there were 250,000 persians, there were 300 Spartan Royal Bodyguards.

    700 Thespians

5.000 Athenians and 4.000 other Greeks.

But in the last battle only 300 Spartans

  • no in the last battle there were also 700 thespians who fought til death along with the spartans

  • o ya now i remember

they never mention about the thespians

  • Indeed. This is the reason Sparta always protected Thespia thereafter.

  • @uiopytrre there were no athenians at thermopylae

  • @hmldjr I know.. but the athenians were protecting the spartans at the sea so the spartans wouldn't get attacked from behind

  • sixty thousand does not count as "millions".

  • Yeah, kinda exaggeration. It was not ONLY 300 who held Thermopylae from the tyrant Xerxes, it was:

    300 Spartan Royal Body Guards

    400 Thespian Warriors

    And 700 Athenian Warriors.

They still were slaughtered, but the Greeks banded together and destroyed the Persian Army.

  • 300 Spartan Royal Bodyguards.

    700 Thespians

5.000 Athenians and 4.000 other Greeks.

But in the last battle only 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians stayed and they were winning for more than 12 hours!..against millions!!!!!!

  • I think the current estimate of Xerxe's troops puts his army at about 250,000. Still impressive on the Greek part, just saying.

  • WHAT THE HECK!?

  • wraios...

  • They filmed this at the actual location. But because of erosion and weathering we will never really know how it looked at the time. But it was expected to be much narrower than this.

  • Actually this movie was filmed in Spain, not in Greece. I've been to Thermopylae. The area is now a mile wide between the mountains and the sea. During the battle it was only 50 yards wide or so.

  • I have this movie! This is oooooold. It's a lot more accurate than that movie 300 though.

  • THE REAL HISTORY AT THERMOPILES

  • shut up i love this movie very much my grandfater went to see it when it 1st came out

  • lol, the persian was able to become a great empire becasue they used Greek mercenaries to fight their battles for them. Persia is full of pussies.

  • I apologize.

You are obviously ashamed by the pitiful mediocrity of Persia. I thought I was answering to a self-confident, educated person. The accomplisments of Persia are so dwarfed by truly great nations that you need to create your little fantasy world.

I apologize, you need your fantasy world to be proud of Iran.

  • @AppiusClaudiusPulche Sir, I applaud you. I came upon these comments and cringed at the uneducated attitude of MrXerxesthegreat1. Very well said, and very true. It heartens me to find people such as yourself still in existence.
