  • I like your style bro.. Great review. I was wondering if the made in Japan San dimas are only available with chrome hardware and Floyd? Also, how is the fretwork of the MIJs compared to the USA?

  • @Renots024Young Thanks. Check their website for specs. The quality of finishing and general build quality - and tone- is great from all of the Pro Mod series guitars we have tried.

  • San Dimas or Pro mod?? Which is better????

  • @Rockakias96 UMMM... the SanDimas is a "pro Mod" production model. If you ment San Dimas or So- Cal, i prefer the So-Cal due to the tone from the Dimarzios. Peasce.

  • San Dimas is the best superstrat out there.

  • @Capdepop You could be right. They are awesome guitars...

  • Is this guitar good for thrash metal etc?? And does it stay in tune when using the floyd rose?

  • @sukkahiki666 You won't go wrong with any of these excellent Charvel guitars.

  • I heard that they use one coil from each humbucker in the middle position, is this true?

  • nice review man! which is best for playing styles

like metallica and other heavy riffing like that?

  • They seem really nice but the truss rods can only be adjusted by removing the neck. Second issue , pickups height cannot be adjusted since they're direct mounted into the body and the pickups were pretty high. So, action cannot be adjusted and the action was NOT decent. Usually , Im not picky on guitar set-up but these two issues are a big BIG turn off for a 900$ guitar ...come on !! ... (sorry for my english ..)

  • @Runark92 these guitars come very well set up and ready to rock :))) Its shipped ready to shred \m/ i actually had to raise the action on my so cal as i am used to Les Pauls etc. It wasn't difficult and now its Perfect. Awesome guitars. Gonna grab a San Dimas now me thinks :))) Great bulid quality (Japanese workmanship is awesome) and unbeatable value for your hard earned cash,

  • Does this play a good blues tone?

  • @JuJuStarBerry996 Yep, sure does.

  • ohhh also forgot to ask, I've heard that to adjust the truss rod you have to remove the neck? this scares me quite a bit

  • @coolmega33 These are superb guitars, you shouldn't need to make any major adjustments. The volume knob is the only tone knob you'll ever need! Thanks for the kind words...rock on.

  • Thanks for the review! man, I want one so bad! So beautiful, perfect for metal but doesn't look too metal- that's exactly what I want (honestly some metal guitars simply look like they have no sell back value), would love to hear the cleans though. Does the bolt on ever get in a way? Lack of a tone knob a problem?

  • hey but the USA production where is? are charvel san dimas socal, style 1 and style 2 made in the USA nomore?

  • The Epiphones are made in China, if i'm correct. Who cares where a guitar is made, as long as the wood, build quality, feel and palyability are good. I'll take a Japanese made So- Cal for 899 anyday.

  • Actually, Zakk has been playing and is promoting his Signiture Epiphone models lately. I've been playing for about 29 years, have played and owned several brands of guitars. Believe me, after trying the So-Cal and San Dimas Japanese models, they are great guitars! Feel, tone, playability, build quality.. TOP NOTCH!! I WILL BE GETTING A SO-CAL!

  • Nice review! Do you think you'll ever get around to reviewing their newest line, Desolation?

  • @HolyDiver97595 It all depends if they become available for review, we'd like to!

  • @PlayMusicPickup I hope they become available, then! I've been wanting a Charvel guitar for ages, they were just always a bit pricey. The new line is right in my range.

  • @HolyDiver97595 They are great instruments. We just picked them up at my store and the quality is amazing...active electronics, all mahogany construction, nice Flame Maple tops on many of them... If you're in NC come by our store and play them all... after we checked them out we ordered 21 instruments...I NEVER order that many of one line, they are that impressive.

  • @CapeFearMusicCenter1 Oh, nice! Just the quality I'd expect from Charvel, then! :D

  • USA Made all the way! I think Korean manufacturing beats the crap out of the Japanese made models. Japan isn't the best Foreign mades, they were just the 'first' USA is far superior............sorry. I have learned from experience :)

  • @StarlightAU Are you insane? I have yet to see any Korean production guitar that can stand up to ESP, Ibanez Prestige, etc. And no, USA-made guitars are not "far superior" than Japanese guitars. Gibson is a perfect example.

  • @FearNoVodka Bernie Rico (BC Rich) closed the Japan shop for his foreign NJ series and moved it to Korea because they could do a better job. That should tell you something right there. ESP? Jackson Ripoffs. Ibanez? Just look at the law suit years. ESP had a law suit time with Jackson. BC RIch and Jackson are my favs and USA made Charvels. Japanese are copy cats. Ask Zakk Wylde if his Les Paul is the USA or the Japanese one.

  • Scheiße Herr Got! Damn i'm going buy San Dimas model, it's amazing. Thank for review really useful!

    Cheers

  • Great review !

  • @menuuzer Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.

  • DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!! They are made in japan now. Any one know if the quality is still as good as the U.S. made series? Hope so, it is a Charvel.

  • @SpookeyEyeGhost We haven't made a direct comparison between US and Japanese made Charvels but these really were great instruments. You'd probably have to play both to be sure but we don't think you'd be too disappointed at all with the Japanese guitars.

  • @PlayMusicPickup Thanks for the response. I'm def. going to try both models out. The So-Cal seems to have the tone i'm looking for. Great job on the demo. Thanks again.

  • @SpookeyEyeGhost Dude, you can't really go wrong with either one..Nihon or USA Charvel. I've played both and own a MIJ SoCal that I bought in Feb 2011. They both feel REALLY good; that's really all you can say if you've experienced both.

  • @ShivaTheAuspicious No doubt! I have gotten to try out both a S0-Cal and a SanDimas. I fell in love with the So-Cal after just a couple of chords and riffs. Didn't have to mess with leads too much, just an amazing feeling neck and fretboard. The quality also seemed amazingly good. Always wanted a Charvel. i will be getting a So-Cal at tax time!! Love the pickup combination in it also. The SD was not bad either, but the So-Cal.... thanks for the response. Keep rocking.

  • @WoWintosh Relax, we all like different guitars for different reasons. You don't need to justify your purchase by bashing others, it's all good.

  • @WoWintosh Glad you like your SanDimas dude. Congrats. But, you need to chill a bit. I happen to like the way the So Cal sounds and looks. All the reviews and demos i've seen, It just seems to have a fuller tone. I could be wrong. Just my opinion. keep it real.

  • NOOOOO!!! They are made in the U.S.A. The So Cal is better for leads and Vai/Satriani type playing. The San dimas is better for hard rock,i.e. Kiss Priest etc. They both kick major ass, but listen too them before you jump on one to see what pickups you like best. You can not go wrong with either model.

  • nice playing, nice guy, nice guitars, nice vid!! ^^

  • Great review! 5 thumbs up!!!

  • I could'nt tell on this video, so I have a quick question about these Charvels. DO you have to take the neck off to adjust the truss rod or is it at the headstock?

  • i would defitnitly go with the san dimas because its soo simple but agressive and modern love it thanks bro for posting this review

  • in need of the wildcard

  • which one is better????????/////

  • @joeldification they are all different not better, you want dimarzios? SD? H/S/S ? or H/H? just depends on what you want

  • @joeldification u dicide

  • You guys have reviewed the EVH Wolfgang Special and also these Charvel Pro Mods? If you had to choose between then for an all around rock guitar which would you choose?

  • @jonw82 Ooooo, tough choice! It would all be down to taste and we would probably all disagree. Hayden says "All of them, thanks" which didn't help at all.

  • @PlayMusicPickup lol I feel the same way.

  • I NEED that SoCal :| it sounds soooo good!

  • The newest MIJ pro mods actually have even better fret work than the first usa versions. i still prefer the old originals from 80-81 but they are hard to come by and very expensive. plus there are many fakes!

These re-issue charvels a blessing for anyone that wanted to know what all the hype was about. for a under 1K instrument these cant be beat...

  • whats the diffrence between japanes and usa charvel beside the pickupframe?

  • Why are people saying its not Original Floyd and or that the pickups arent real DiMarzios in the So Cal? Its really throwing me off.

  • Great review Hayden. Best Charvel Pro Mod Series review on the net...IMHO. Well done and thanks for the info. Based on your work, I went to a local music shop and played all three. The So Cal is definitely were I am headed. Have to say, I went there liking the San Dimas, but thought the Seymours were way muddy when compared to the DiMarzios. Plus, the So Cal is better looking in person, IMO. Pretty sure I am going to run it through a H&K 25th Anniversary Edition 20W/112.

  • You used the same amp/settings with the guitars? Just to be sure the difference in the sound of each one is "real". And do you feel some differences in the neck of the san dimas/So-cal with the wildcard? In some magazines said that the Wildcard's neck feels a bit thinner and more comfortable... did you feel that too?

    Thanks!! Nice review! =)

  • @Zhylar Thanks for watching :) Yes, we used exactly the same amp and pedal settings for all three guitars. The Wildcard did feel different but much of that could be put down to it being the only rosewood fretboard of the three. Dimensions wise perhaps a touch slimmer but, again, that could be more feel than actual dimensions. AS for comfort, can't say any of them felt even remotely uncomfortable to be honest as all three really were quite excellent in the playability stakes.

  • @PlayMusicPickup Thanks for your answer!! Thats what I thought... and thanks for your really fast answer!

  • how does the neck on these compare to an ibanez wizard neck?

  • @ThayerLazarou They're more Fender than Ibanez to be honest with a nice comfy C profile. Definitely nothing like a Wizard neck. You can still motor on them though!

  • CTS pots? switchcraft switches? Is charvel still making the USA charvels?

  • @TheMassdistortion There is definitely still USA Charvel production though it might be more in the high end / custom lines. As for the pots in these guitars, we'd have to look into that. There was nothing in the bumf about being CTS pots though.

  • @PlayMusicPickup can you get the specs on the posts, switches and jack? Are there going to be any with a recessed trem?

  • @TheMassdistortion We'll get back to you on the pots and switches but as for the trem the Wildcard features a fully recessed trem allowing silly upbends.

  • @PlayMusicPickup Cool!!! Is the wildcard the only one with the recessed trem though? I guess I should see which model wound up being the wildcard?

  • Maximum WEEDLE on the go? Isn't Weedle that lame ass little worm from Pokemon that nobody likes?

  • @WoWintosh We probably missed the Pokemon thing so not entirely sure. Is it?

  • @WoWintosh Guitars are serious mens business. Men don't admit to watching Pokemon.. ahahaha.

  • @jonw82

Here's the deal. My 12 year old nephew (an avid Pokemon fan and beginning guitar player) asked me if he could post a comment using my account. "Whatever", said I. I had no Idea what he posted until now. Apparently Weedle is a pokemon character that resembles a caterpillar. It is also very weak, at least in the video games or whatever. Also, I guess it isn't very well liked in the pokemon community.

  • I like the Ferrari red but would prefer rosewood fretboard only because it sounds a little warmer and doesn't darken with use. When you think in the UK they sell for £599 with an SKB hard case whilst the USA models sold for £899 with a gig bag only, whilst sharing almost all the same components, I think it's a no brainer.

  • Ive just bought a So Cal, the Floyd is cheap, but thats my only niggle. I prefer the Ibanez Edge to the stock Floyd anyday

  • @jezzer1969 Hi, not sure about cheap these original Floyd trems go for a fair whack. But it's all down to personal taste.

  • Just got my Ferrari red San Dimas in yesterday. You are right to focus on the neck in the review, I've never played one like it. They've rolled the edge of the fretboard at each fret individually, which is why it looks scalloped from some angles, then polished and smoothed down the ends of the fretwire too, making it mad comfortable to play. And the thing resonates like a fixed bridge guitar. Quality/price ratio does not compute. Explode.

  • Awesome this is the first actual review I have seen on the new Pro Mods. I bought the white San Dimas and can`t wait to pick it up!

  • useful interview. thanks!

  • I got the So Cal in Snow White a few days ago. I've been playing guitar over 20 yrs and have owned many different makes and models. This guitar is as close to perfection as it gets. The neck is incredible and the fret-work is like something that came out of a custom shop-it's that flawless! Unbelievably good value. To answer your question wormie 18, the neck on an U.S. standard strat is like a hockey stick compared to this!

  • This is a really good review! I was wondering if there's a real difference between the USA models and the pro mods. The guy from the music store suggested that the wood might not be as nice, so maybe they'd lose a bit of their magic. But, can you say something about that?

  • @mgrein93 I suppose there could be a difference in the timber (after all the savings have to come from somewhere, Japan isn't really the budget option anymore). Having said that these are some seriously good guitars but until we get the US ones through for review we wouldn't like to compare them. For the money though, bang on!

  • EZdrummer fill in the beginning? :)

Great guitars, I'm waiting to get my hands on the so-cal model.
