We only need the government to invest into our air industry, we also have companies that makes airplanes such as Bombardier.
Obviously NORAD is essential to our defense, but I wouldn't agree to buying F-35 just because of this purpose. Our current fleets of CF-18 can do this with ease. I never said our navy is our best equipped branch. I'm saying we need to upgrade our navy because it's starting to get out of date. We are surrounded by water, therefore our NAVY is also essential. Give me some reasons to why you think F-35 is the most essential thing... We're leaving the middle east soon anyways.
@canadathestrong The F-35 is overpriced. Many cheaper jets can do the same thing. What i meant by the new f-15 is the silent eagle which is now in development and it have twin engines. the price of this thing is cheaper compare the f-35, and it's performance is comparable to the f-35.
The F-35 has a (comparitably) very user-friendly cockpit, lowering the training time required, and thus, reduce the cost. It also has more internal hardpoints for weapons + bigger cannon. The range on internal fuel is similar, despite being smaller. F-35 has a smaller radar cross-section.
Not saying the F-15SE sucks, because that would be my second option. But it seems like something that would need replacing in 15 years as oppose to 30.
@canadathestrong We already have the technology and designs to built our own jets. I don't see any thing blocking us from restarting our jet projects again. It will pay off after a few decades, and we wouldn't have to rely on America jets. Even Sweden has it's own jet industry, compare Canada to Sweden, we have much much more resources and our economy is way better.
NORAD is a waste of money, and it benefits mostly the US not us.We need more NAVY equipments to defend our resources in the northern hemisphere. These jets wouldn't do us any good without the NAVY in the northern hemisphere when things get ugly.

The CF-18 was Canadian designed and built specifically to Canadian specification.. it was not bought outright from the Navy like other countries did.. The CF-18 Essential has the same performance characteristics as the FA-18.. you must be confused with the Super Hornet.

The only real difference between the two is that ours can take off from an aircraft carrier.They both use the same weapons(American made of course) and just about the same avionics. If anything Ours has far more advanced avionics

@andrewm153351 Also Russia built a plane that is better (all though not nearly as gorgeous) then the F-22.. its called the PAK FA T-50.. and it costs half the price. Just look up the comparison specs if you don't believe me.

@andrewm153351 and don't get your information from Wikipedia on these two aircraft because its flawed. If you notice Wikipedia claims that the FA-18 has a higher thrust to wait ratio than the CF-18.. but it claims that the CF-18 can hit mach 1.8 at 36,000 feet but the FA-18 hits mach 1.8 at 40,000 feet.. do you see the contradiction here..

lol you have to be joking. Improved weapons and guidance? LOL you obviously know nothing about both aircraft. First of all, both aircraft are made by the same American company. Second of all, the F/A-18(the one we use) is $57 million and the cf-18 is $36 million.
The only real difference between the two is that ours can take off from an aircraft carrier.They both use the same weapons(American made of course) and just about the same avionics. If anything Ours has far more advanced avionics
