  • Can this be used for any realisticly-sized knife? Like a Ka-Bar or similar?

  • @wormer104 This system could work with any straight blade, regardless of length. The only thing most sharpening systems can't handle is serrations. With this particular system you could pretty much sharpen a little multi-tool blade, a sword, and anything in between. Again, assuming it's not serrated.

  • @Adam198420 Thank you man. :D

  • @cutlereylover Dude I Seriously Want one of Those Did you get it on Line or Local

  • my first cutlerylover video

  • Love your vids

    :)

  • hi cutlery lover, long time follower here (not sure why i didnt subcribe earlier though), I recently purchased a ka-bar and it says the edge andle in 20 degrees- does this mean i have a 40 degree blade or should i use a 10 degree sharpener for each side of the blade? if so what would you recoomend

  • @mikethenascarfan sharpen at 20 degrees on both side of the knife, it works great on my Kabar usmc fighting knife.

  • how much is this one?

  • @CVOoutdoors Runs 48-54 dollars on average

  • For anyone who thinks these are too expensive, look up the Smith's 3-in-1 sharpening system, it features similar shaped ceramic rod (but with a "round" side in addition to the point for serrations and the flat edge for finishing), a carbide sharpener and a diamond sharpening pad for about like $17 on Amazon. It's a great, cheap alternative for those that can't afford a spyderco. I'd love to see cutlerylover review it

  • I just got one of these a few weeks ago. How should I go about cleaning the stones? Someone told me toothbrush and tooth paste or just put it in the dishwasher that I don't have. Will either of this work with out damaging the stones?

  • @pipesterNCH To clean, scrub stones with a plastic scouring pad and powered abrasive cleaner, let air-dry.

  • Absolutely outstanding video - thank you for posting

  • Is there enough space in the unit to store the additional diamond and ultra-fine accessory stone pairs as well as the standard two?

  • should i get this or the lanskey sharpening system. would the lanskey work with a full flat ground blade.

  • How much does the sharp maker cost looks good to me

  • @wolfarmy2525 i have seen them as cheap as $25 plus tax dont buy it at cabelas though then it will be like twice the price

  • @JUSTADDCHEESE Where at? I'm getting ready to buy one.

  • if you can hold an angle with the spyderco kit ,, you can hold one with a flat stone ,,, a waste on money ,,in most cases

  • @heettreet

It is FAR easier to hold a 90 degree angle rather than holding an arbitrary angle. That's the secret of the Sharpmaker.

  • @ve2zzz i see your point ,,, that is why i said ,,, in most cases ,,,,,, what i kinda ment was ,,, you can prop your stone a any angle you want ,, without a kit ,,, and use the stone flat if you wish ,,,, alll a matter of preference ,,, i use a stone as well as a kit that holds any angle i want ,,, thanks for the thoughtful response

  • All production spyderco it is very good. And tri-angle only it has proved.

  • According to new reviews, the quality on these has gone to shit :/

  • Question! On smokeymountainknifeworks they sell the extra fine ceramic rod (not included with the standard sharpmaker which only has medium and fine) by itself for $20. Could I theoretically buy the stone itself, put it on a flat side on a desk so that one of the edges is facing up and then use it like a regular sharpening stone? I usually use sharpening stones and have no experience with rods, but would what I just said work?

  • do you have a video on how to strop a knife?

  • Have been looking at that spyderco kit for a while now, this review made me go for it.

I just hope it can handle the ESEE Junglas :P

  • Not your flesh.... Light.

  • How much?

  • i just ordered a spyderco tenacious after watching your review as well as nutnfancy's. my knifes usually will see a good amount of use, so while im sure the tenacious will come razor sharp, im guessing it wont stay that sharp for more than a number of months. would this spyderco sharpening kit be a good option for my new tenacious? i have never used a system like this before, but am sure i will be able to figure it out. i do not want to have to use the cheapo sharpeners. thanks!

  • @billhasher get a knife with better steel and you wont have to sharpen it nearly as often as your tenacious.. but yea the sharpmaker is more than adequate to sharpen 8cr13mov

  • How does this work compared to the lansky or gatco sharpeners???

  • these are perfect for serrations

  • ooops... never mind i found your tanto sharpening video dont know how i missed it last night...

  • how does this sharpener do on tanto blades? I love tanto blades but have such a hard time sharpening them do you have any tips? I have used bench stones smiths tri stone to be exact and i can get an edge sharp enough to shave but the tip section of the blade is a pain for me... and how does it do on larger blades like a usmc ka-bar, looks like the stones are not long enough to do the full blade.

  • @Cutlerylover

Would you be able to use this (the spyderco tri-angle sharp maker) on a benchmade model 51?

  • isnt a stone better?

  • I have the same exact kit. I love it. If you are scratching your blade or dulling your tip, you are doing it wrong. You slide the blade straight up and down. You don't need to angle your blade against the stones, the 30-40 degree angle is already provided by how the stones are positioned in the base.

  • DAMN YOU CUTLERYLOVER U MADE ME ADDICTED TO KNIVES

  • @loku1125 yeah he makes me want to spend every dime i have on knives and knife stuff like this sharpening system

  • @surgicalshot almost everything i see on his vids i want and most of it cant find

  • Are blade angles listed on the knife maker's websites, or is there another way of determining if one has a 30 or 40 degree angle?

  • Hi, I got this exact one and tried to sharpened my knife followed by a direction. For some reason (luck of my practice), I sharpened not only the blade but to the non-blade area scratching it all over..... now I am scared to use this for any other knife. :-(

  • @urkingod You angled your knife with the stone, not keeping it straight up and down along the stone.

You should keep your knife straight vertical.

    Operator error

  • i just got one and love it already i have never been able to sharpen kershaws sanvic steel that they use on there skyline and i spent 5 minute on it and it will shave lol

  • Hey man, i was just wondering cause I'm planning on buying this. How nice of an edge will this put on a knife with pretty good steel? (AUS8, VG-10 ect)

  • its so expensive tho

  • I'm thinking of getting this. Can you tell me if it sharpens sirrations?

  • @BalisongWielder Yes, it sharpens serrations very well.

  • i was going to get the spyderco sharpmaker for my first high quality sharpening system. i am just starting to get my collection and picking out knives i like. do you think the sharpmaker is good for that.

  • Great Video! If you can tell me, have you sharpened the ZDP-189 steel yet. I just purchased the Spyderco Delica 4 with the ZDP-189 blade and it'd kinda dull. I took it to the local shop to have them sharpen it, but they couldn't get it down. They were using the Spyderco Sharp Maker, but I think they were using the ceramic bars. Please let me know. Thanks for your videos. They're great!

  • I'm thinking about getting one of those sharpmakers.

Do you stilll use it, Jeff?

  • @GMGvanS i have had mine for a bout two years and i had an extreamly dull knife and after sharping it cut leather

  • @zippomustang05 Yeah, I got one a week ago, and it works pretty damn good.

  • Great Video Bro! I never knew how to use the rods before iv always used stones!

  • cutlerylover, i have a very old small swiss army knife and i've tried many different kinds of shapeners but i cant really seem to get the edge very sharp, please help

  • @orangechicken210 This system is one of the best if not the best for razor sharp edges also you can get them even shaper if you buy the ultra fine rods but they are about the same price as the whole system.

  • u used a benchmade griptilian on a spyderco sharpener!

  • could you tell me how to determine the degree of a blade's edge? let's say for example, my SOG trident.

  • do you have to wet the rods?

  • Why do they make the protective rods out of brass? Won't it still damage the blade?

  • @cmalchik yes but m8 brass is a soft metal so it wont damage it as much as say steel

  • I like this a lot. I just bought the smith tri hone system. Would I be crazy in saying that I could use a protractor and raise one end of the stones to the correct angle and then cut the knife level into the stones? Would seem to me that it would be similar to what this does. Your thoughts?

  • I hate these tri-angle rods, use just plain round rods, that way you can just twist them a little when too much metal accumulates on the ceramic when you sharpen your knives.

  • hey could u help me out and tell me what angle grind a sog trident is the tanto version

  • Wish Spyderco made EXTRA coarse rods

    Be safe

  • do you happen to know the grind angles of a cold steel pocket bushman and black rock hunter?

  • For those of us that actually follow directions, this works very well. I just got one and l love it.

  • Can you sharpen a recurve blade with this?

  • how do you know the angle you need

  • how do you sharpen a Serrated Edge knives?

  • @urkingod you have to sharpen each little edge for it self and of course find a stone small enough to do that, is not easy but possible

  • Love your videos. Just wondering if you've ever used a Lansky sharpening system and how it compares to the Spyderco? Those are the 2 systems I'm considering.

  • Does anyone know if one can use this Spyderco sharpener to sharpen larger style knives too, such as a CS Trail Master?

  • I have spydy's sharpener but i havent done my trail master on it i only strop it

  • @Varghjarta I just did , works great.

  • I have an early version - bought it 25 years ago for $20. It is a great sharpener. If the blade is dull, start with the gray stones turned point out. As you proceed, you will feel and hear the rasping of the dull blade getting sharper. When the rasping goes away, turn the stones flat side out and keep going, ending up on the flat faces of the white stones. The 30 degree is more for kitchen knives and the 40 is for working knives.

  • @BlueBustard Doesnt the old version only have the 30 degree setting ?

  • @flashdamingo The old version had only one setting - I believe it was 40 degrees. I can't find mine right now to check. (I've mothballed it since acquiring the new version.)

  • If I would get one, should I get the ultra-fine rods?

  • @75SilentWarrior That depends on how OCD you are about your knives. I can get an edge that will whittle hair after the flats of the standard white stones. I've never tried the UF stones, so I may not know what I'm missing. The full size Spyderco benchstone in UF grit gets rave reviews for that final edge polish.

  • You forgot to mention that this costs a fuckton. I went to my knife shop to get something to sharpen my knives with, and this was $80! I think I'll still get one though, as I kind of need it, but it sure burns a hole in my pocket.

  • ? My shop sells them for $24 us dollars

  • @dadoody Seriously? Damn. It's $80 on Spyderco's website, so you got a great deal.

  • maybe I went during a good sale i dunno. amazon has it for 50 bucks

  • @dadoody This sharpener for $24? What shop is this?

  • @wcropp1 - A knife shop @ the Cerritos mall. I bought one about 1 year back.

  • @dadoody Where is your store?

  • @dadoody In Italy it costs 80€ without shipping...

  • @darknuke96 - You can't compare to Italy and Europe. You guys made things difficult on yourselves with all of that VAT (Value Added Taxation). A tube of toothpaste costs you guys triple what it would cost in the USA.

  • @dadoody That's why I wanna leave Italy and come to the USA!

  • @fidgetingfinch It generally costs about 10 dollars to get a knife sharpened by someone else anyway, it will add up pretty quick if you use your knives a lot. Just consider it a long term investment :)

  • @PontoonTeek Funny story: I wanted to sharpen my knife, so I took out a steel rod sharpener and a protractor. I measured a 20 degree angle, and kept it steady. Then I used it as you would a Sharpmaker. It worked great! :D

Obviously a Sharpmaker will be better, but this will suffice while I save for one. You're right, it is an investment. :)

  • Question: after I use knife I use white stones to re-fresh blade--just cutting food etc. But maybe this is wrong? I should go back to the gray stones then come forward again to the white? Thanks

    this is for spyderco sharpener

  • are they diamond or ceramic rods?

  • the stock rods are ceramic, although spyderco offers diamind stones, but they are expensive

  • This only really works for already sharp knives that are exactly 15 or 20 degrees(each edge). It also won't thin out edges. Maybe it's just me but I think I might of wasted my money.

  • It can think out ANY knife down to 15 or 20 degree's it just takes time, and then that in turn depends upon the steel. I have a UKPK which has a S30V steel blade which takes around 45mins to a hours to take it from a 20 down to a 15 thne to put a 20degree microbevel.

    Just have a little patience.

  • I wrrapped sandpaper around the rods and I'm not even halfway there with my s30v 940 osborne. It's a good system but doesn't remove enough metal.

  • They do sell extra Diamond coated steel rods that you can use, but they are about $40 a pair. But once you put the right bevel on your knife you never need to worry again because it only takes a few awipes to touch it up, unless your a nutter trying to chop cinderblocks in half with a penkife (I've seen it attempted with the aid of a hammer).

  • I've seen the diamond rods. I have a dmt for grinding alot of metal though. Just saying this system is no one-size-fits-all.

  • to take the edge down do you just continusly use the 15 degree angle untill it sharpens properly or do you have do something different?

  • @TheTntuser Not quite true. It will work on any knife with a bevel thinner than the chosen slot. I sharpen with a coarse stone at 12 degress (24 total) then go to the 15 degree slot (30 total). Before the 40, I use a 34. You can rebevel a knife using the 30 degree slots on the Sharpmaker, it just takes a lot of time. You will probably want a coarse stone to go with the Sharpmaker. A cheap $5 coarse hardware stone will work. Just rebevel the knives thinner than 40, then move to this tool.

  • This is the best investment if you own good quality knives, although some of the other commenters are correct about having to be careful with the tip.

  • are the replacement rods the same thing as the normal rods? because i ordered 2 replacement ultra fine rods to go with my sharpmaker and this is my first time owning one of these. are they the same thing?

  • I got this sharpener the other day and it is the best thing out there.

  • wow the sharpmaker i have must be really old...

it's by spyderco, it's got the same triangle stones (brown and white) and the same design. But it doesn't have the little top cover or two different angle options. and it comes in like a nylon case... weird...

  • your technique ios wronjg, you dotn let the tip slide off the stone it dulls the tip...

  • yea but it takes so much more time, skill, and effort to do it the right way

  • Not really...there is a video on youtube that shows how not to dull the tip of the knife on a spyderco sharpmaker.

  • you never said how much it cost lol

  • Around $50 bucks

  • @cutlerylover you are right, i take that back. but when you first try this thing (at least for me) it was extremely frustrating. i use the 40 degree side and now i have a razor sharp spyderco pacific salt btw great knife. thanks jeff!

  • @cutlerylover thumbs up for your spelling haha

  • Your letting your tip roll off the stone which is dulling it

  • I used one at a knifeshop today, and it made my knife the sharpest iv'e ever had it.

  • U fucked up! it does not blunt the point if u know how to sharpen a knife!

  • @slimjim355 You can do this with any sharpener. Sharpmaker it's a little easier to do, especially when going fast, but if you do your best not to it usually doesn't effect the tip.

  • @slimjim355 Its a poor craftsman who blames his tools

  • wow that exactly what i was looking for. im sold

  • Can you make it razorsharp using this?

  • yes if you buy extra fine stones....check my video

  • What do you prefer for an Victorinox?

  • Just got this sharpener, works good on rigid stainless steel, but its useless for flexible made in china bargain bin knifes.

Tried to sharpen my Ka-Bar 1211, it sharpens the flat of the blade pretty good, but the belly portion up to the tip just gets blunted ... i don't think I'm rolling off the ends of the rods ... might be my technique but i just cant get the belly of the Ka-bar sharp, should i try back beveling?

in my kit the 30 degree portion says its for back beveling only?

  • Have you noticed that every tri-angle stone has at least one rough edge? All of mine has that. Two edges are perfectly mirror smooth and one edge has small dips and ridges. I basically work around those, but still annoying.

  • how do you know when to go back to using the medium stone after you have fully sharpened the knife with both stones?

  • I REALLY want to get one of those but it is hard to find one for cheap

  • i have mine proffesionally done

  • i said that ^ i dont have mine professionally done

  • how to clean them ??? thx

  • I use Ajax Powder cleaner and a pot scrubber works perfectly.

  • it depends on what you are trying to take off. usually a standard de-greaser will do.

if not - try lighter fluid, however you have to be careful. Clean the blade - wipe it dry - rinse with water, dry again, and wipe with gun oil, or a sealing oil.

  • Hey Groovy vid...now those angles you are talking about...try to think of this as a multi angle honing system..the narrower of the two is like your "thinning angle"-you are actually thinning the edge. The wider angle is giving it what you would call a "working edge"...by giving a blade this multi angle hone -if done correctly should give you a very sharp long lasting edge that will provide some really straight cuts. I use a lot of systems...this one seems really versitile- I'd buy one. Thanks

  • whe 40 degree angle is for kitchen knives it is made to last longer, and the 30 degrees andgle is for makin knives for killin or sth, for hunting and showing of :D

  • if you have a spyderco aus 10 steel knife you can get it shaving sharp with just 40 degrees. 30 degrees was meant for taking off the base of over sharpened knives

  • You think weels are any good?

  • what would happen if you sharpened at 35 degrees, would it be sharp and last a good while?

  • Do you know what the CRKT blade angle is? Also Kershaw folders. If anyone knows it would be greatly appreciated.

  • most knife companies have them at 40 degrees

  • just bought it! shoould be here on friday or saturday. im phyked!

  • how much do they go for

  • i bought mine for like 60 buks. but i was very dissapointed. i couldnt get any of my knives to sharpen. im putting mine on ebay if you would like to bid for it. im selling it for 35 or 40 dollars. my ebay name is thegreentoaster123. its not up yet but it will be in the next few weeks

  • don't put it on ebay

Let me ask you how many knives and tries did you use on the sharpmaker? If its under three then your not giving it a chance. The spyderco sharpmaker is an exellent sharpening system. One thing that most people find is that it doesen't work on their very dull and blunted knives. That is because this system is used for maintaining knives not setting their edge. The brown stones just arent that course for that work. I recomend you buying a dmt or any other diamond course stone

  • Thanks for the quick discussion of the Sharpmaker, I've been debating on which sharpening 'kit' for my carry knives, and this explained quite a bit about this specific kit.

  • Very nice, I would get one but I am still set in my ways with oil stones. How would you say ceramics or the stones used in the spyderco system compare to lets say a India Or Arkansas stone? Also, What is your preferred method of sharpening your EDC knives?

  • how much did the fist sharpener cost?

  • about £53 in UK

  • man that's like 100$

  • yeah for this price you might as well

save another 50-75 and get a edgepro apex

  • yeah, or you can be a real cheap-ass and buy a sharpening stone for like 10-20 $ :D

  • and then possibly ruin the profile of your blade

  • the price of being cheap :)

  • the quality being what your looking for

  • most people don't have the time or skill yet to be able to use the cheap stones. And ive found there hard to come buy. that or im just picky and have to go with the diamond stones

  • If youre serious get both, The edgepro apex is great for reprofiling and the sharpmaker is perfect for day to day maintenance. I find I only use the EdgePro when I get hold of a new blade and need to establish the correct angle to begin with,.

  • 60$ on ebay with shipping

  • Hey man, love your vids. great stuff. but seriously, systems shmistems. free hand on oil stones and arkansas stones are the way to go!

  • i like it but its only got 2 diffrent angles

  • i gotta get that!

  • wow this thing this thing is pretty cool

  • I love my sharpmaker!

  • what angle can you shave at? great vids

  • You won't be able to shave you face with this sharpener. You'll need a benchstone and a leather strop for any straight razor sharpening.

  • @elazteca23 You can sharpen with the 40 degree or 30 easily.

  • @elazteca23 like for a razor? just buy a razor sharpener...

  • Great instructional video, thanks so much for your time and expertise.

  • cutlerylover,

    got a question.

does it matter which degree you use? i heard 30 degrees make your knife sharper but the 40 holds the edge better. But, does the angle change for each and every specific knife? or does it not matter?

  • the smaller the angle the sharper the knife cna get but your right the smaller the angle gets it will dull faster, 30 degree edges are more suited for kitchen cutlerty as aposed to a hard use work knife, HOWEVER, if you watch ym new review on the BM553, I put a tiny 24 degree edge in total on ym EDC knife as an expereiment and so far so good because the harder steels will eb abkle to hold the smaller edge longer without dulling easily...

  • Man i love your vids!!

But could you make a movie about how to sharpen a kukri i find it pretty hard to do :P
