I have watched quite a few of your videos and everything you say makes total sense. I wondered if you had any suggestions for napping? I have had a dutch warmblood imported from Holland for nearly 2 months however, he naps....
He will school really well, hacks in company (if he gets scared hides behind his friends bum) and walks out in hand fine but he very jumpy, spooky and generally nervous and he will not hack alone at all! He reverses, spins and rears if pushed.
I was going to try long reining next? Do you know anything else I could try?! He is a beautiful horse and I'd be gutted to give in!!
Your horse seems to lack confidence. Don't push him, it will make it worse, stay within his comfort zone and slowly expand as he gets mor confident. I think training him on Long Reining would be a great idea!
Thanks - I will try hacking in company and ground work to build confidence. I'm hoping if he'll walk in front long reining..! I don't really know how to react when he does nap though? At the moment I have 3 options 1.dismount and lead him or 2.rein back in the direction I want him to go until he agrees to goes forward, 3. go home! What should I do? Especially as you identify pushing makes it worse!
I'm completely lost for ideas & so many people say beat him up & it's his fault!
@EllenOfstad He will be walking along and then, sometimes at something obvious and sometimes at nothing, he will refuse to walk on. Initially he plants himself, if I ask him to walk on he will either reverse or spin round and refuse to turn back to face the direction he is meant to walk in. If I 'insist' and he gets frustrated he will rear. I have some video of him doing this posted on YouTube! I have tried to contact a local parelli group and I'm waiting for a call back!!

I am afraid I am not sure what you mean when you say "nap"?
