this is so sad....judy was the definitely the most talented child star of that era but she was treated like crap. always being told that she didn't measure up...smh poor thing
the scene near the end of the clip never happened. Judy had a gift for embellishing a story and her daughters state the the "you dirty old men , let that little girl in there" was just a story that Judy made up for that interview on the spot for a laugh.
@lilgiggler35 Nobody ever says "you dirty old men" - it's "you dirty hams" A ham actor is a performer who overacts or is exaggerating and it's all in fun. Hardly a dirty old man! Also, it may or may not have happened and the entire thing was in jest anyway - so we're to say they never had fun on the set? Actually I believe it was the stories about the munchkins that Liza stated she exaggerated.
Actually, Shirley Temple was offered the part by MGM. Twentieth Century-Fox declined the offer and cast her in Susannah of the Mounties instead. Perhaps you should actually read some books instead of getting all of your "proof" from a movie. This fact is discussed in the books Shirley Temple: American Princess and The Films of Shirley Temple..
@shewearsfunnyhat That's not the point. Perhaps YOU should read the Ajean Harmetz book on the making of the film - look at the timeline! Take a look at the ACTUAL studio records. And am I to believe you are SERIOUSLY quoting the RAG biographer Anne Edwards?? ROTFL!
@Wizard488 I'm sure the fame and fortune was well worth her life with contsant drug addiction to pills playing this movie started her on. i'm sure it was well worth it.
I noticed a slight error. When Mayer gives Judy the book, the title of the book is 'The Wizard of Oz'. The 1939 movie was simply called 'The Wizard of Oz', whereas the actual book title was 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'. Just a slight observation there.
@5:55 Tin Man - no no don't feed the animals, they work better when they are hungry. and @ 6:53 Tin Man - I almost step on that dog again, Lion - what dog. hahahaha
ohh dang...have you guys seen the actual dress of dorthy in the original wizard of oz that judy garland wore? i have ....and that thing is super mini....you would mistake it to be one of the munchkins outfits no joke...definitely not fat
Damn Hollywood..will chew your ass up & spit you out looking like bubble gum & not give a damn about it. Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, you get my drift.
Then when they're dead & gone after enduring the BS of the public accusing them as being washed up tired acts..."Oh he was such an artist, Oh she was so talented"...and so on with them not recieving a shred of all that loving admiration while they are still around to hear & recieve it. The general public are such hypocrites.
When Judy, Bert, Ray, and Jack were filming this scene they lip-syncing to a track that was pre-recorded by Judy, Ray, Bert, and Buddy Ebsen, (the actor who was originally cast as the Tin Man). There was no time to re-record the group singing "Off To See the Wizard" in the trio and quartet versions. Jack Haley only recorded his solo parts in songs.
haha! Judy's mom's face when Judy grabs the knife! Judy was one of the best entertainers of all time. I actually don't think Lana Turner was a blonde during the filming of this movie. And according to Mickey Rooney's bio he had already met Lana and gotten he pregnant when she was 15. She had an abortion and didn't tell him anything until years later.
They did such a good job portraying Judy Garland both young AND old,...
The scarecrow makes for a good Ray Bolger,...but neither the tin man, nor the cowardly lion made for good substitutes for Haley & Lahr. It would've made all the difference.
wow, shirley was only 9 and could have gotten Dorothy. Judy was the best choice, she was older and had a great singing voice. having a little 9yr old would have been too much and not the same. even though i love shirley, they made a right decision
"this role would have been too much, for any 10 year old..." cant under estimate the power of a ten year old. Before shirley came along, im sure many said " no 4 year old can learn to tap like bojojangles." .. "Jean Harlow died more than half a year before, Way too early to EVER have been part of an Oz negotiation" is not necessarily true. It takes YEARS to make big decisions in the acting business. Shirley is well over 9 now, and she obviously knows the truth and has no reason to lie.
@thebrittcorre Jean Harlow died June 7 1937, MGM bought the movie rights to 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' in January of 1938. So that would be to early to make decisions on casting. It took a total of 18 months from pre-production in Jan. 1938 to the release date in Aug. 1939, so yes it was way too early to EVER have been part of an Oz negotiation. Jean Harlow had died 7 months before MGM even had the rights.
I can't believe they would do this to stars like Judy Garland back then. Judy Garland had so much energy, talent, life in her... She didn't need those pills, then again, stars back then weren't given ample time to rest properly in order to perform in a healthy manner. I mean, I see her in musicals and all the life and beautiful talent she gives us is enough to show how amazing she was without needing those pills that consumed her whole life away. This movie breaks my heart :-(
The line where the Tinman says, I almost step on that dog again, is true, Toto (Terry) was stepped on by one of the Munchins. he was off for two weeks. Thanks friendsfamily
Judy is not fat!!! This is the kind of thing that leads people into eating disorders because the people around her tell her she should lose some weight! She looks great onscreen and offscreen. And FYI...I would take cake over a cigarette any day!
If judy's mother was any kind of mother she wouldnt allow them to put judy on pills, judy was not fat and it's really sad that their are stage mothers like judy's mom that are trying to live out their dreams in their own kids
@keanufan09 I'm not entirely sure Mrs G was portrayed 100% accurately here. Judy and and her mom did not get along; Judy had a lot of animosity towards here mostly because of her dad. So keep in mind this is Judy's account as told to Lorna. Not to say it ISN'T true, but as with a lot Judy said, should be taken w/a grain of salt. Also, amphetamines weren't understood back then; nor the addiction. Mickey Rooney was also addicted, but he kicked it. Poor Judy was never really given the chance.
@lafea34 Most stars didn't like Louis B. Mayer. Dame Elizabeth Taylor stood up against him once when when he mistreated her mother. The only one who seemed to really like him and called him Papa Mayer was June Allison.
@DudeSinger Garland WAS jelous of Lana Turner and almost all other great beauties. She was always over critical about herself and insecure. Sometimes even selfdestructive.
I don't know how the Gene Harlow myth got started as the poster pointed out she died before MGM even had the rights to this movie. But I think it's perfectly possible that was an excuse made up by Fox because I think it would be quite embarassing for them to admit their top money maker didn't have a strong enough singing talent for a big role like this. MGM's side of the story makes more sense. That Judy was the first choice and they very briefly considered Shirley because she was a bigger name.
sorry - can't. I actually had another scene from this on here and it was pulled down for copyright. I'd suggest trying to get the DOUBLE VHS version that was mail order only (not the crummy one they sold in Walmart later on) and converting it to DVD since the DVD versions are incomplete also, from what I read. It is true that Shirley was the first choice for the role of Dorothy, but her studio she was signed to would not release her for the amount of time it would take to make the film and ever her talents were not at the scope for the part of the Wizard of Oz.
