PERMANENT WAVES (1980) marked the starting point for Rush's full-blown entry into condensed, accessible progressive rock. They abandoned the 20-minute suites and mystical lyrics for catchy progressive song structures, and more human, worldly-related topics. But, Geddy Lee (vocals/bass/synths), Alex Lifeson (guitars) and Neil Peart (drums/lyrics) didn't lose their brilliance in composition, even if most of the track lengths were fit for radio. ENJOY! ;o)
Anyone else listen to a rush song, hear the lyrics and they make sense to you, then you look at the lyrics, you misunderstood some words and now it makes no sense but other times it makes even more sense?
WOH asurreal. did you think that maybe hard work might have something or paying there dos rush played a high school curcuit to help promote there albums & saw them at the high school i went to , promoting first & second albums so maybe they worked at getting there music out there but that is just my opinion
there's one basic difference between the Rushes and ALL the much more superior bands that never "made it"... the Rushes were at the right place at the right time.. it seems pretty obvious the legions that "dont get that reality" will continue to shower The Rushes with praise and unworthy "glory" as being the best this and that and the other for years to come ( sigh).. and will NEVER realize HOW many superior and less pretentious bands and artists exist that never"lucked out".BUT,thats show biz.
I'm sorry but it just impossible to be that fucking amazing on bass, the whole middle section is just too awesome to properly describe. The bass fill at 3:35 is truly inhuman.
Absolutely everything about this song is spot on amazing. The lyrics are truly brilliant, Neil never really came back to these heights lyrics wise. It shows off Alex at his most quirkily brilliant best as well.
@Silversleeves1 To my knowledge, he is not a "Laveyite" or interested in the Church of Satan. If he were, though, the lyrics of the song would still make sense. Church of Satan is actually fairly atheistic. Their view of "Satan" is that there is a carnal and self-serving force or principle within us that should be embraced rather than stigmatized. They are big fans of freewill.
We are alone, with no excuses. That is the idea I shall try to convey when I say that man is condemned to be free. Condemned, because he did not create himself, yet, in other respects is free; because, once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does.- Jean Paul Sartre. Basically what this song is about
@rockandrollfan93 i think geddys voice is unique in it's own way and why they sound different then most rock of there time also i would rather hear i high pitched voice to most new pop artists computerised voice anyday
@zackjp i guess you could say that... only one drum solo would i put in competition to yyz, and that's Moby Dick by Led Zeppelin, but comparing Rush and Zeppelin is like apples and oranges...
lifeson's overlooked as a guitarist but hes an accomplished player, soloist n ACCOMPANIEST!his tone is fantastic n his "out of tune"solo on villa is just brilliant!!these are true musicians n we may never see their likes again as theres an intellect behind everything of rush's that the industry does not promote or want nowadays!!shame!!maybe theyre too deep or something i dunno!what i do know is that time does not n will never diminish them or the value their fans place on them!!excellent!!

I still find it curious that Peart, a Laveyite, wrote this.

geddy lee has kind of a high annoying voice, but he makes up for it by being a kick ass bass player, and having the best 3 piece rock band there is
