Wow! What can I say! I love Osipova drive in this part and elegance of Zakharova. Gillian brought it together. Swan Lake and spanish flamenco at the same time. How remarkable! Bravo!
rumor is that when she's in rehearsal and someone walks into the studio while she's doing fouettes, she'll change her spot for a couple of turns to see who came in and then switch it back to the mirror.
can someone tell me the exact name of the very first piece of music, where people clap along to gillian dancing? I can't seem to pick it out of all the varaitions/acts/scenes on a don quixote album! Thanks
While I think it's admirable that she can do many pirouettes (as can a bunch of other dancers, mind!), and respect her as a dancer for her hard work, I just don't like her style. Her arms are the not pretty, and she should lose those Gaynors! They make her feet look positively horrible, and she has pretty nice feet. I also love (but not really) the way the ABT orchestra makes everything sound kinda funny... hmm.. oh well!
I hate it when the audience feels like being obnoxiously "participative" and claps in all the wrong places, even as part of the audience myself I get annoyed and even nervous for the dancers. Is it so impossible to hold the enthusiasm just a little bit until she's done?
This is worth mentioning.ABT just opened yesterday with a new Nutcracker. They performed at Brooklyn Academy of Music, as, the Opera is still at the Met. If you can, read the NY Times review and see Gillian as the Sugar Plum Fairy,my old role. Nothing I did could ever compare to her. It was truly fantastic!
Having danced professionally in NYC,I enjoy audience participation. But,with Don Q. it can be dangerous. The tempo is so fast and you have to be exactly on the beat. The audience doesn't understand, which,is normal, but, it can confuse a dancer. It is usually 7 beats, before a clap. This is so hard. When I watch it, I find myself counting, by habit. No one can compare to Gillian. She is great. Also, most of us wear Gaynor Mindens now, which may look like a plank to some, but,the support is worth it.
@KarmaNicole94 that's a bummer...sorry about that. I'm going to miss her class too thought. It's on February 20th I think and I'm going to be at Dance Olympus in Chicago.
I think the ABT Swan Lake THIRD ACT is the strongest dancewise and most logical storywise...Gillian Sizzles as Odile...Love Marcello Gomez as Von Rothbart seducing the court...sufficient pandemonium ensuing once the deception is revealed...and the Queen fainting..you just gotta have the Queen faint at the end of act 3!!
I kinda have to agree about the truncated 4th act however...but the forgiveness pdd was quite nice in my opion.
hahah ahhh you gotta luv gillian!! such a stunning turner. she may not be my favorite kitri but she is still a superior dancer! she's a lovely odette and i saw her as juliet and she was amazing!!
Gillian dont listen to the negitive remarks that are written about you , you have something they dont , you are a major Principal dancer of a world class ballet company and have had more opportunities then they ever did
gillian murphy... the closest to perfection a dancer will ever come. i have never ever ever seen her even slightly mess up. she is so amazing!! and her fouettes are beautiful, of course!! she can do anything.
I love Murphy and Carreno, they are wonderful! But this production (like all of ABT's productions) is terrible! this is Kevin Mckenzie's right? They pretty much use the same costumes as Baryshnikov's fabulous production but they are duller and the choreography isn't as good! Mckenzie has no right to just take away good productions like Misha's and David Blair's! He thinks he has to dumb it down for American audiences! Well I'm American and I hate his productions!!! BUT ABT has great dancers!
Just can't stop wondering how you could tolerate ABT Swan Lake, Kevin McKenzie butchered the last act , which was a crime, we need to see Odette's love & forgiveness to the Prince.
@9415908 You know, even as a dancer, I agree. I just saw R. and Juliet at the Met with Gillian and David Hallberg. I even emailed ABT (I am a patron so maybe they will listen) I said that they underestimate the intelligence of their audience.David was way too tall for Gillian which made the tower scene look wrong. There were 2 intermissions a lot of people left after the 2nd one. I was very disappointed.
@9415908 I agree I am an ABT patron and I emailed them after I saw R. and Juliet.
Gillian danced with David Hallberg who must be 6inces taller when she is on pointe. It didn't look right. I told them the same thing yo said, that they underestimate the intelligence of their audience.
i agree with iczerman and osbourna..... ballet is not justturns, jumps and extensions.......Dancers nowadays lack the sincerity of their roles..... lack good coaching for temperament....dancers should do research....you tube is available.....

BOOOORING!!!! She has ZERO passion. Go see Plissestkaya or Osipova doing this, that is KITRI, not this, don't be fooled!!!! I can't stand her dancing, it's only jumps and turns! Ok, the fouettes were amazing besides that funny-ugly facial expression she always does whenever she is executing something technically challenging.
Wow....I'll leave her dancing out of this....You are obviously unfamiliar with this ballet. It is called Don Quixote. The clapping is part of the ballet, part of the choreography. It was pat of Marius Petipa's interpretation of the Spanish people. If you ever watch Flamenco you will get an understanding of this. It is just as much part of the music as the any of the instruments being played in the ballet at this particular point and not in the least disrespectful.
You did not understand. I meant the AUDIENCE clapping along the music during the fouettes part. I am familiar with Don Q, I have danced most of the roles in it, and I know flamenco dancing as well. Just pay more attention to what people say before throwing in your comments. Did you even watch the entire video?
I see. I'm not a big fan of the audience clapping to the music either, although I wouldn't go so far as to say its disrespectful. Many of the orchestras and dancers I have worked worked with have actually been appreciative of a lively audience like this one. I think the point of the ballet is to convey a story and make the audience feel something and I believe that was accomplished. Also I think if you want to critique someone its more prudent to do it personally and in a constructive manner.
I think it's tacky anyway, not educated. I have nothing against audience clapping when the dancer does something incredible (I like that, as a dancer), just this kind of thing along the music is too much, very tacky. That's my opinion, the video is posted here and it is open for comments.
The funny face: ok, ballet is supposed to be beautiful. That UGLY face she makes is not expression, it looks like her tummy hurts, and that is the same face that she does in don q, la bayadere, giselle, sylvia, etc; no difference.
You just don't understand or you are too young to understand it.
I agree with you about Maya, she is Kitri. But not Osipova. I actually love Murphy so my opinion will be different than yours but I think Murphy isn't just all tricks and to me she brings this reality to the choreography and makes you believe the story really happened. To me Osipova is all tricks. I think when she was first dancing Kitri she was better but now she is just a gymnast to me. Murphy does have passion, this production is just terrible, all of Kevin Mckenzie's productions are terrible
I've never seen Osipova's Kitri so I can't comment. HOWEVER - though Gillian is a great technician - she was such a show-poney with her fouettes. They were very neat don't get me wrong - but the additional arms and the 4 or so pirouettes she did in between just was TOO MUCH - what happened to a bit of subtlety? She did the same thing in Swan Lake with Odile - I didn't enjoy her interpretation of that either.
Well since it's my opinion it can't be wrong. I'm not saying that it's a FACT she is all tricks, only my opinion. Osipova just reminds me of a gymnast, that is just the way I think she dances.
9415908, I get that feeling about Osipova in everything she dances. Sure, she has an amazing talent for ballet, is freakishly flexible, and audiences seem to love her, but I don't get much emotion from her at all. Her Kitri is outstanding in my opinion, but her Giselle and anything else that requires her to show a range of emotion brings out her youth. It's just something I think will come with age...She is very young after all.
Yes, Plisetskaya is the gold standard. I agree that Osipova is all tricks but I think Gillian is all technique and not pleasing to the eye. The only semi-current-day Kitri on film who approached Maya was Cynthia Harvey in the film with Misha.

Who cares about the clapping, that is even inappropriate, you don't clap with the music in a ballet, that's so childish.
Anyway, people these days only care about how high the dancer jumps or how many turns they do, so it's circus, they love it.
I am sorry, but she is just BAD, there is really something wrong about her dancing and that funny face she makes.
