  • gillian's fouettes at 2:22

  • Amazing~~~~~~~~~~Bravo~Gillian~such a incredible fouette she did.

  • Wow! What can I say! I love Osipova drive in this part and elegance of Zakharova. Gillian brought it together. Swan Lake and spanish flamenco at the same time. How remarkable! Bravo!

  • she is FIERCE. so much fire. love it ^^

  • Jose and Gillian- the best pair ever (:

  • i think her variation was impressive! :)

  • can you get this on dvd?

  • Gillian Murphy is just amazing

  • Can't say that I'm a big Gillian Murphy fan, but I think that she's quite brilliant as Kitri. Brava!

  • ジリアンマーフィーやばい!

  • i never thought i would never forget nina, but i do love gillian more!

  • rumor is that when she's in rehearsal and someone walks into the studio while she's doing fouettes, she'll change her spot for a couple of turns to see who came in and then switch it back to the mirror.

  • can someone tell me the exact name of the very first piece of music, where people clap along to gillian dancing? I can't seem to pick it out of all the varaitions/acts/scenes on a don quixote album! Thanks

  • @mymediafixation this is kitri's entrance variation from act 1

  • Her arms are the only thing that bugs me, other than that I quite like her

  • Muito lindo!!!! AMEIIIIII!!!!!!

  • oh wow she is like the fouette queen! \

  • GORGEOUS!

  • i hate her SO much! cuz i LOVE her dancing so much! and i wish i could do MY fouettes like that :(

  • Can you upload the rest of the performance please?

  • While I think it's admirable that she can do many pirouettes (as can a bunch of other dancers, mind!), and respect her as a dancer for her hard work, I just don't like her style. Her arms are the not pretty, and she should lose those Gaynors! They make her feet look positively horrible, and she has pretty nice feet. I also love (but not really) the way the ABT orchestra makes everything sound kinda funny... hmm.. oh well!

  • they're both amazing!! but it bugs me when the audience starts clapping. especially when they clap off the beat. it's so distracting

  • she is perfection

  • what is the name of the song at the beginning?

  • 2:18 - the end Anyone recognize that (Swan Lake)? ;)

  • @GirlX12345

Yup..it's Gillian's "Hey look at me I'm about to do something fabulous!" gesture. That's one of the reasons I like her so much!

  • Maravilhoso...Wonderful!!!

  • I hate it when the audience feels like being obnoxiously "participative" and claps in all the wrong places, even as part of the audience myself I get annoyed and even nervous for the dancers. Is it so impossible to hold the enthusiasm just a little bit until she's done?

  • @gmhmilenio I absolutely agree, it just disrupts the whole flow of the story

  • Love her Kitri!

  • This is worth mentioning.ABT just opened yesterday with a new Nutcracker. They performed at Brooklyn Academy of Music, as, the Opera is still at the Met. If you can, read the NY Times review and see Gillian as the Sugar Plum Fairy,my old role. Nothing I did could ever compare to her. It was truly fantastic!

  • Having danced professionally in NYC,I enjoy audience participation. But,with Don Q. it can be dangerous. The tempo is so fast and you have to be exactly on the beat. The audience doesn't understand, which,is normal, but, it can confuse a dancer. It is usually 7 beats, before a clap. This is so hard. When I watch it, I find myself counting, by habit. No one can compare to Gillian. She is great. Also, most of us wear Gaynor Mindens now, which may look like a plank to some, but,the support is worth it.

  • aaaaah, i adore Don Q !!! i looove Jose's pirouettes and Gillian is just Gillian

  • YESSSSSS to the Coda at the end!!! AHHH with the fan...fabulous!!!! so much presence!!!!

  • her and David Hallberg came to my school and did pink pas it was incredible

  • Own it Gillian, OWN IT GIRL!!!! She is simply AMAZING

  • uhuuuuuuu!

  • gillian murphy. oh my goooooooooooood. i really wanna take a class from her in indy soon! she's wonderful.

  • @lauramae73 Ah! I'm in Indy too! There's an intensive coming soon with all sorts of members from ABT. Gillian being one of them I think.

Too bad for me, I sprained my ankle.

  • @KarmaNicole94 that's a bummer...sorry about that. I'm going to miss her class too thought. It's on February 20th I think and I'm going to be at Dance Olympus in Chicago.

  • ı dont lıke her dancıng so much ı mean she is great but just not my favorite dancer...

  • oh god she has become kind of dirty.....

  • I hate those Gaynor Mindens. They make her feet look like planks of wood.

  • Incredible fouettes, love the arm variations, so much control!!!

  • I love how she fans herself in the middle of a fouette like it's nothing lol.

  • carreno is the best dancer of the world

  • her musicality is to die for.

  • SHE IS AMAZING I WANT TO BE HER WHEN I GROW UP!

  • @pointe100295 You can She started working on her 32 fouettes when she was 11.

  • @mikkili248 I have been working :) I can do 16 fouettes on flat, and everyone has to start somewhere :)

  • God! I get chills watching her!!! Gillian Murphy is MY HERO <3

  • Wow, i didn't know she was this magnificent.

  • gillian and marcelo came to guest for my studios don q! it was incredible

  • Murphy & Carreno are the best

  • I love the audience's participation.

  • I think the ABT Swan Lake THIRD ACT is the strongest dancewise and most logical storywise...Gillian Sizzles as Odile...Love Marcello Gomez as Von Rothbart seducing the court...sufficient pandemonium ensuing once the deception is revealed...and the Queen fainting..you just gotta have the Queen faint at the end of act 3!!

I kinda have to agree about the truncated 4th act however...but the forgiveness pdd was quite nice in my opion.

could someone recommend a good 4th act?

  • hahah ahhh you gotta luv gillian!! such a stunning turner. she may not be my favorite kitri but she is still a superior dancer! she's a lovely odette and i saw her as juliet and she was amazing!!

  • omg

    AMAZING!

  • Gillian dont listen to the negitive remarks that are written about you , you have something they dont , you are a major Principal dancer of a world class ballet company and have had more opportunities then they ever did

  • I bet she could eat an apple while she's doing her fouettes ^^

  • LOL that's great

  • And shortly after she'd be able to peel it as well. Gillian is amazing! Absolutely NO question about that!

  • @xXbealyXx i totally agree!!

  • @xXbealyXx sooo true!

  • i love gillian but paloma is a better kitri i think.

  • gillian murphy... the closest to perfection a dancer will ever come. i have never ever ever seen her even slightly mess up. she is so amazing!! and her fouettes are beautiful, of course!! she can do anything.

  • I love Murphy and Carreno, they are wonderful! But this production (like all of ABT's productions) is terrible! this is Kevin Mckenzie's right? They pretty much use the same costumes as Baryshnikov's fabulous production but they are duller and the choreography isn't as good! Mckenzie has no right to just take away good productions like Misha's and David Blair's! He thinks he has to dumb it down for American audiences! Well I'm American and I hate his productions!!! BUT ABT has great dancers!

  • I agree, I can't stand ABT's productions at all. I tolerated Swan Lake, but Paquita was an abhorration. (sp?)

  • good for you then.

  • Just can't stop wondering how you could tolerate ABT Swan Lake, Kevin McKenzie butchered the last act , which was a crime, we need to see Odette's love & forgiveness to the Prince.

  • And this is what I hate about YouTube. My opinion, you have your own. I happen to think their Swan Lake was tolerable, at the very least.

  • @9415908 You know, even as a dancer, I agree. I just saw R. and Juliet at the Met with Gillian and David Hallberg. I even emailed ABT (I am a patron so maybe they will listen) I said that they underestimate the intelligence of their audience.David was way too tall for Gillian which made the tower scene look wrong. There were 2 intermissions a lot of people left after the 2nd one. I was very disappointed.

  • @9415908 I agree I am an ABT patron and I emailed them after I saw R. and Juliet.

Gillian danced with David Hallberg who must be 6inces taller when she is on pointe. It didn't look right. I told them the same thing yo said, that they underestimate the intelligence of their audience.

  • @9415908

  • They're enjoying themselves watching Gillian dance!

  • Gillian danse comme une marguerite dans le vent.

  • i love!! me encantaron los fouettes, limpios y brillantes, y las pirouetas de Jose Manuel Carreño sencillamente espectaculares...

  • some of the dancers in the corps were messing up some things :)

  • she should be giselle!

  • Gillian always just radiates perfection.

    Bravo!

  • in Russia claaping is a form of appreciation...even in the middle of someone dancing....

  • Yea, clapping in the middle , but not the way they are doing during the fouettes. Sorry, its cheesy.

  • I agree, I hate clapping during a foutte sequence. This is ballet, not the ice capades.

  • i agree with iczerman and osbourna..... ballet is not justturns, jumps and extensions.......Dancers nowadays lack the sincerity of their roles..... lack good coaching for temperament....dancers should do research....you tube is available.....

  • i can kind of see what you mean, but i personally feel that alina cojocaru does have sincerity in her roles. i feel that she really puts everything she has into performing the role and conveying the story and emotion to her audience.

  • Fabulous! Is this from a DVD?

    Thanks for posting.

  • I'm a newbie to ballet... butI don't think this performance was boring..Gillian got the crowd clapping in time with her fouettes while others did not...and the others did'nt use a fan as a prop.

But..I could tell that Jose Carreno is a good dancer!

  • Correction..Nina Ananiashvili also has the crowd clapping in time and shows alot of energy!

  • Her fouettes may be really incredible, but they're placed nowhere near Spain.

I saw her at the MET, I liked 32 counts.

  • Okay, you may like it, but pleeeeaaaaase don't compare it to Maya's.

  • That is in no way true!! Gillian is an AMAZING dancer.

  • Who cares about the clapping, that is even inappropriate, you don't clap with the music in a ballet, that's so childish.

Anyway, people these days only care about how high the dancer jumps or how many turns they do, so it's circus, they love it.

I am sorry, but she is just BAD, there is really something wrong about her dancing and that funny face she makes.

  • the clapping is people enjoying the music!!!

the reason people like the jumps and turns is because thats dance!! it's cool, so they like it!! and she has great technique, too.

the "funny face" she makes is expression.

  • This is the last time I am replying to this, it's just not worth it.

But I just can't believe what you just said, you must be kidding or out of your mind.

YOU DON'T CLAP ALONG IN A THEATER WITH ORQUESTRA! THATS A DISRESPECT WITH THE MUSICIANS AND THE DANCERS! Please let's be civilized!

  • Wow....I'll leave her dancing out of this....You are obviously unfamiliar with this ballet. It is called Don Quixote. The clapping is part of the ballet, part of the choreography. It was pat of Marius Petipa's interpretation of the Spanish people. If you ever watch Flamenco you will get an understanding of this. It is just as much part of the music as the any of the instruments being played in the ballet at this particular point and not in the least disrespectful.

  • You did not understand. I meant the AUDIENCE clapping along the music during the fouettes part. I am familiar with Don Q, I have danced most of the roles in it, and I know flamenco dancing as well. Just pay more attention to what people say before throwing in your comments. Did you even watch the entire video?

  • I see. I'm not a big fan of the audience clapping to the music either, although I wouldn't go so far as to say its disrespectful. Many of the orchestras and dancers I have worked worked with have actually been appreciative of a lively audience like this one. I think the point of the ballet is to convey a story and make the audience feel something and I believe that was accomplished. Also I think if you want to critique someone its more prudent to do it personally and in a constructive manner.

  • I think it's tacky anyway, not educated. I have nothing against audience clapping when the dancer does something incredible (I like that, as a dancer), just this kind of thing along the music is too much, very tacky. That's my opinion, the video is posted here and it is open for comments.

  • in Russia, Cuba, America, etc., audiences clap with the rhythm to show appreciation... if you think it's childish, then that's your problem.

and that "ugly face expression" you're referring to, is her smile... you need to get your facts right and watch more ballet!!

  • The funny face: ok, ballet is supposed to be beautiful. That UGLY face she makes is not expression, it looks like her tummy hurts, and that is the same face that she does in don q, la bayadere, giselle, sylvia, etc; no difference.

You just don't understand or you are too young to understand it.

Watch more ballet, that's all I have to say.

    Goodbye.

  • I agree with you about Maya, she is Kitri. But not Osipova. I actually love Murphy so my opinion will be different than yours but I think Murphy isn't just all tricks and to me she brings this reality to the choreography and makes you believe the story really happened. To me Osipova is all tricks. I think when she was first dancing Kitri she was better but now she is just a gymnast to me. Murphy does have passion, this production is just terrible, all of Kevin Mckenzie's productions are terrible

  • I've never seen Osipova's Kitri so I can't comment. HOWEVER - though Gillian is a great technician - she was such a show-poney with her fouettes. They were very neat don't get me wrong - but the additional arms and the 4 or so pirouettes she did in between just was TOO MUCH - what happened to a bit of subtlety? She did the same thing in Swan Lake with Odile - I didn't enjoy her interpretation of that either.

  • To 9415908,

    Osipova is all tricks ???

    Wrong... very wrong opinion.

  • Well since it's my opinion it can't be wrong. I'm not saying that it's a FACT she is all tricks, only my opinion. Osipova just reminds me of a gymnast, that is just the way I think she dances.

  • 9415908, I get that feeling about Osipova in everything she dances. Sure, she has an amazing talent for ballet, is freakishly flexible, and audiences seem to love her, but I don't get much emotion from her at all. Her Kitri is outstanding in my opinion, but her Giselle and anything else that requires her to show a range of emotion brings out her youth. It's just something I think will come with age...She is very young after all.

  • Yes, Plisetskaya is the gold standard. I agree that Osipova is all tricks but I think Gillian is all technique and not pleasing to the eye. The only semi-current-day Kitri on film who approached Maya was Cynthia Harvey in the film with Misha.

  • now thats wat im talkin bout!

  • you are right, just amazing!!!!

  • and now it's her and osipova doing kitri for me. she's good!

  • Does she EVER stop impressing me? NO!

    Perfect!

  • I know, she is SO incredible! She makes every ballet step I ever did look like a clumsy cow.

  • I see a little Maya in her Kitri interpretation. Her timing and beat are exceptional in this. Does anybody else see this?

  • wonderful firebirds, so much amplitude, so light.

  • sorry, but what is a firebird?

  • It's a leap!

  • it's the thing where she jumps into an angled 180 and leans her torso back.

  • Oh, it's so good! Can we have the whole ballet please?

  • BEAUTIFUL!!! i love her.

  • Oh my god! She is the best! Beautiful! Amazing. love her.

  • Fantastic! Thank you for posting this. Exceptional, brilliant dancing.

  • Espetacular!

  • Extraordinary!

    Thank you!

  • She is my favorite...

  • She was my 1st role model.

  • Gillian's timing is so right on!! She adds a whole new dimension to Don Quixote and makes it her own.

  • Gillian Murphy is so incredible she makes every ballet step I ever took resemble a clumsy cow.

  • Gillian is truly the best. Her fouettes are to die for!!
