maybe they had to use force because they were yelling and all that, and maybe the people were puhsing the line even further back and everything...i dunno
I know they're doing their job - but there are infiltrators and have been ever since the Seattle anti-globalization protests. Don't you wonder what the heck is going on in camera at Montebello, Cancun, Banff, Waco etc. whereever these SPP meetings have been held that the Bush-Calderone-Harper feel they need this kind of protection from the people and won't let the press in to cover it?
OK - enough. People can be aggressive in crowds - they jostle each other at department store sales events. But jostling and walking slowly forward IS NOT VIOLENT. Laying down in front of the cops IS NOT VIOLENT. Infiltrating the groups concerned about a US corporate takeover of the country and *throwing billiard balls and rocks* IS violent.
With all due respect, there have been no reports that the police officers who were dressed as protesters ever tossed any billiard balls or rocks. In fact, one media report I listened to said that this was one of the reasons they were discovered...because they didn't toss any rocks, while real protesters around them were tossing rocks.
Do you really think there were only 3 undercover officers at the entire protest? They only CAUGHT 3 of them. You are almost unbelievably gullible. I realize that at the end of the day, when the provacateurs work was done, there was a riot in part of the protest. This all goes back to "The Battle for Seattle". Witnesses there discovered there were undercover operatives egging on people with violent tendancies.
It's clear that you would prefer to believe that anyone in the crowd who did anything aggressive, must have been an undercover police officer. At demonstrations like this event, there are always going to be idiots who just want to make trouble for the police, and who could care less about the reasons the legitimate protesters are there for. In short, these events just provide them with an opportunity to cause trouble. To ignore this fact is simply being naïve.
I find the title of this video a bit biased. I counted at least three punches by one of the so-called "non-violent protesters", starting at frame 0:21, before the police officers used their tear gas to move the crowd back. Perhaps both sides need to share in the criticism.
But what is the guy whose doing that is an undercover CSIS agent? Even if it were a protester why would he be that angry?
Maybe because he doesn't want to see his country go down the toilet because of the 300 policy changes the SPP is trying to get end-run around Congress, and the Canadian and Mexican parliaments?
What do you think? Day takes his orders from Harper who runs a very tight cabinet. Harper for his part was and is heavily influenced by Tom Flanagan,a prof. the University of Calgary, who has some VERY PECULIAR political ideas. Try googling "the man behind stephen harper". I think there is already enough integration between ours and the US security forces that the actual order for that came from the US side. Also the SQ have a reputation amongst police, as rough & tumble screwups. :-/
If you want to protest, protest. That's done by taking all sorts of legal action. Pushing the police around isn't one of them. Too many commenting here don't see the police as people with families who are assigned the job of keeping order. Yes, keeping order. If you think that's ludicrous, you haven't considered that if you can do what you want, someone meaner can do worse to you. When that happens, who are YOU going to call?
Asa matter of fact I have great respect for the cops and I know they were doing as they were told. Which raises the question why were they told to go undercover to provoke riots and WHO TOLD THEM TO DO THIS. That would be Harper and Bush and Calderone since they are working past their own legislatures on this one. No - the protesters were there because they see this SPP thing as a treasonous to their countries and lethal for small business.
Hey there :) The comments are set for approve, so sorry for the delay. Our police forces and army do as they're told - it's a duty profession - they don't necessarily join out of right-wing political convictions. But *Day* takes his orders from Harper who is heavily influenced by the Calgary School and also, as far as I can tell, by Bush & co.
Why was this even an event when clearly there was no reason to protest in the first place...Harper,Bush and Calderon are having positive talks for the better good of their countries as well as the whole free world...Damn is there nothing worthwhile? What's a protester to do?I know...create something to bitch about...lousy unpatriotic whiners...
Obviously you haven't been following this issue at all and have swallowed the government line. The SPP started as something called NASPI, put forward by a political hack called Tom d'Aquino posingas a biz guy. he's not but he seems to have sucked but business leaders into it. It's about 300 policy changes as a work around to drag our laws down to the lowest common denominator. You will kiss your children's futures and health as well as your own goodbye by playing ostrich on this one.
A la 20ieme seconde un manifestant attrape la matraque du policier. Le policier tante ensuite de reprendre le controle de son tit baton. A la 33seconde un deuxieme policier frape le manifestant pour lui faire lacher prise.
Folsom - the Quebec police force have just admitted they planted fake protesters. It was the lead on Google News Canada a few hours back. And the cops have refused to comment when asked by CBC whether or not they were told to provoke the crowd. That's neither confirm nor deny strategy: tantamount to an admission of guilt. The guy punching the cop is a cop - he's got a bandana on.
They admitted that three cops were planted in the crowd... not that they were there to provoke anything... and for the record i was in ottawa during the march the day before this and there were hundreds of protesters wearing bandana's... which is very common during these protests.... were you even there?
Do you really think the SQ is going to admit what the undercover guys were doing there? It would be consideerd some sort of 'security risk' by Day et al. So they will have been told to STFU. And there will be damage control.
The point is not about the protest - red herring people - THE POINT IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH the SPP and should police instigate violence. In the video with Union Leader Dave Cole being pushed around - you'll see they have bandanas on. Just like typically worn by
You are right citizens are not animals. Obviously these ones are acting like animals and deserve to be treated as such as with holding pens and tear gas.
If these misguided youth without a real cause or a real focus in life put as much effort into doing something usefull with their lives, they would be successful and contributing members of our country.
You don't think protecting Canada's sovereignty is a real cause? Do you even bother to check out why people are protesting this secretive meeting or does it mean nothing to you? At least go through the trouble of learning about what is at stake.
No - this is raw footage posted on Indymedia brought back form the summit at Montebello. You may think you know things but really you can't read minds and when you assume... I think you now what *I* mean. ;)
Flags? You mean bandanas, that's Black Bloc insignia - the guys with the bandanas. They are at worst, a fake militant creation to discredit the globalization movement, and at best an infiltrated activist were infiltrated. It depends on which activists and Seattle witnesses and activists you speak with. Some activists have no idea there has been an infiltration. They too are naive and/or in denial. This has been a problem since at least the mid 90's.
I believe in peaceful protest also but this wasn't. From this, I agree with other people when they said it... the crowd was advancing on the police line and the guy with the black hood that has a draw string started punching a one of the officers starting at 00:20 and onward. You can see his fist there. Although I do hear someone screaming "stop pushing us"; not sure if that was meant for the police or the group of people behind them pushing them.
When you act offensively towards police officers, you have to expect tear gas and physical reactions. IF anything, I would suggest the title is misleading compared to the footage. Next time, lie less and don't act covertly, because the protesters were out there to bring more transparency. This costs everyone involved credibility.
Yeah, ain't he just? ;) "no-job dirty no-job heads." ROFL. AmericanManifesto - that would be -> Manifest Destiny? Every century or so they try another takeover. :-p
i'm sorry but when i look at this video, I see police holding a line and a crowd advancing on them - this is not non violent - after watching this, I would call it actively resisting. I'm just curious, but what is stopping these peaceful protesters from backing up?
These Humans are Voicing their oppinion. Do you even know what they are protesting? Governments forming together. Ever hear of NWO? See you at the RDID lineup, jackass.
I'm only going by what you posted. Were you there for a cause or for the image? "Your first protest" gives me the impression you go for other reasons and "glad you left" gives me the impression you weren't there as a protest.
I think you'd do better to message Angelic Destroyer directly. It was his/her first protest., not mine :). I'm thinking, maybe wrongly, he/she wasn't expecting any sort of trouble. Naive, true. But there has to be a first time for everything!
There were a number of skirmishes like this from the footage I've seen at various times throughout Sunday's protest, and they were both inside the activist holding pen a.k.a. green zone as well as outside of it. There were reports of police pushing people into other riot police to start things.
Anyone else think it's wierd police treat you this way when you pay their salary. They aren't George Bush's police and they aren't stephen harper's police anymore then they are yours or mine.
its a shame how our governemt act like this and specially the police by making such a stupid thing to make us look bad, i thank god then the ppl there that exposed those masked officers, our canada should be free from all of this, i hate bush and i dont want canada to be there. ppl this video is just to show you that the people up there (MP and others)) are making all of this to steal our money
Don't get me wrong i;m all for expressing your right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression, but this video is proof that the protest was no longer peaceful by any means... Fortunately the general public know what the red and black flags mean and the tactics so often used by the people who wave them.
You people disgust me. "Merely shoving and pushing"?? Funny how you forgot to mention the guy punching the police officer in the head. Tear gas is used to restore civil order, you know, like when a group tries to force their way through a line of police officers just doing their jobs protecting property and people alike.
Civil order? Shut the fuck up, hows that for civil order. Were you there? Do you even understand what they are protesting? Its your freedom man. Holly fuck that was ignorant. Props to the guy that punched the cop in the face.
I wouldn't so far as to call it "punching the police officer in the head". As he was at distance it was more like "tapping the police officer's protective visor".
I would like to see more protesters condemn violence and actually arrest other protesters who break the law by assaulting police officers. Get a few of those examples in the media!
You are fucking stupid. Those people were very violent and were about to assault the hotel where Bush was. Of course police did their job. They did a good job... but if it was just for me, I would have used real bullets instead.
The police. I've seen it happen before. The cops hire people to start a riot so that they can beat the shit outta the protestors. i just watched a clip of it. they're called provacouteers
Just for the record, several poeple posted rudedely and I deep-sixed the posts because they weren't civil. However they did make the point that this isn't as violent as in China. Well, we are protesting to make sure this doesn't BECOME China. In camera meetings, avoiding parliamentary oversight of legal changes, and riot geared police and protester holding pens are a bad prelude to fascism.
Between 33-37seconds one of the cops on the right hand side of the frame is wielding a baton against one of the people in their face from what I can tell. The crying lady must have gotten a face full of tear gas. There is someone else I saw in the viddie who also gets hit in the head. There are so many people jammed together and the camera angle is a bit weird making it difficult to see. I think the guy who shot this was holding his camera up in the air over his head.
If you mean the redhead, she got pepper sprayed and they are rinsing her eyes out. She is not a little girl - she is a young woman. She is in the first part of the video and well back from the front of the line.
Since when is it normal to tear gas and use a baton on protesters who are merely shoving and pushing? This all started back with Mike Harris and has gotten worse. Now you young folks thinks it's NORMAL! Which is terrible.
Not very peaceful I think tear gas should be used

maybe they had to use force because they were yelling and all that, and maybe the people were puhsing the line even further back and everything...i dunno
kevsterma 4 years ago
well there's force, and then there's unnecessary force. using a sheild wall to push the protesters back - force.
using tear gas on unprotected civilians - unnecessary force.

The police are clearly being pushed by a MUCH LARGER group of people. Can't always pin 100% of the blame on police.

I know they're doing their job - but there are infiltrators and have been ever since the Seattle anti-globalization protests. Don't you wonder what the heck is going on in camera at Montebello, Cancun, Banff, Waco etc. whereever these SPP meetings have been held that the Bush-Calderone-Harper feel they need this kind of protection from the people and won't let the press in to cover it?
dianneckcu 4 years ago
OK - enough. People can be aggressive in crowds - they jostle each other at department store sales events. But jostling and walking slowly forward IS NOT VIOLENT. Laying down in front of the cops IS NOT VIOLENT. Infiltrating the groups concerned about a US corporate takeover of the country and *throwing billiard balls and rocks* IS violent.
dianneckcu 4 years ago
With all due respect, there have been no reports that the police officers who were dressed as protesters ever tossed any billiard balls or rocks. In fact, one media report I listened to said that this was one of the reasons they were discovered...because they didn't toss any rocks, while real protesters around them were tossing rocks.
Canuck51 4 years ago
Do you really think there were only 3 undercover officers at the entire protest? They only CAUGHT 3 of them. You are almost unbelievably gullible. I realize that at the end of the day, when the provacateurs work was done, there was a riot in part of the protest. This all goes back to "The Battle for Seattle". Witnesses there discovered there were undercover operatives egging on people with violent tendancies.
dianneckcu 4 years ago
It's clear that you would prefer to believe that anyone in the crowd who did anything aggressive, must have been an undercover police officer. At demonstrations like this event, there are always going to be idiots who just want to make trouble for the police, and who could care less about the reasons the legitimate protesters are there for. In short, these events just provide them with an opportunity to cause trouble. To ignore this fact is simply being naïve.
Canuck51 4 years ago
I find the title of this video a bit biased. I counted at least three punches by one of the so-called "non-violent protesters", starting at frame 0:21, before the police officers used their tear gas to move the crowd back. Perhaps both sides need to share in the criticism.
Canuck51 4 years ago
But what is the guy whose doing that is an undercover CSIS agent? Even if it were a protester why would he be that angry?
Maybe because he doesn't want to see his country go down the toilet because of the 300 policy changes the SPP is trying to get end-run around Congress, and the Canadian and Mexican parliaments?
dianneckcu 4 years ago
to dianneckcu, do you think Stockwell Day would tell them to infiltrate and cause a riot to make the protestors look bad? Or CSIS?
historyofbigotry 4 years ago
What do you think? Day takes his orders from Harper who runs a very tight cabinet. Harper for his part was and is heavily influenced by Tom Flanagan,a prof. the University of Calgary, who has some VERY PECULIAR political ideas. Try googling "the man behind stephen harper". I think there is already enough integration between ours and the US security forces that the actual order for that came from the US side. Also the SQ have a reputation amongst police, as rough & tumble screwups. :-/
dianneckcu 4 years ago
If you want to protest, protest. That's done by taking all sorts of legal action. Pushing the police around isn't one of them. Too many commenting here don't see the police as people with families who are assigned the job of keeping order. Yes, keeping order. If you think that's ludicrous, you haven't considered that if you can do what you want, someone meaner can do worse to you. When that happens, who are YOU going to call?
airdrie1 4 years ago
Asa matter of fact I have great respect for the cops and I know they were doing as they were told. Which raises the question why were they told to go undercover to provoke riots and WHO TOLD THEM TO DO THIS. That would be Harper and Bush and Calderone since they are working past their own legislatures on this one. No - the protesters were there because they see this SPP thing as a treasonous to their countries and lethal for small business.
dianneckcu 4 years ago
Stockwell Day maybe? The cops don't come up with this on their own. They aren't that sadistic.
historyofbigotry 4 years ago
Stockwell Day maybe? What did he and Bush talk about on their bike ride I wonder.
historyofbigotry 4 years ago
Hey there :) The comments are set for approve, so sorry for the delay. Our police forces and army do as they're told - it's a duty profession - they don't necessarily join out of right-wing political convictions. But *Day* takes his orders from Harper who is heavily influenced by the Calgary School and also, as far as I can tell, by Bush & co.
dianneckcu 4 years ago

The guy punching the cop is a cop - he's got a bandana on.
dianneckcu 4 years ago
They admitted that three cops were planted in the crowd... not that they were there to provoke anything... and for the record i was in ottawa during the march the day before this and there were hundreds of protesters wearing bandana's... which is very common during these protests.... were you even there?
Heddwynn 4 years ago
Do you really think the SQ is going to admit what the undercover guys were doing there? It would be consideerd some sort of 'security risk' by Day et al. So they will have been told to STFU. And there will be damage control.
The point is not about the protest - red herring people - THE POINT IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH the SPP and should police instigate violence. In the video with Union Leader Dave Cole being pushed around - you'll see they have bandanas on. Just like typically worn by

You don't think protecting Canada's sovereignty is a real cause? Do you even bother to check out why people are protesting this secretive meeting or does it mean nothing to you? At least go through the trouble of learning about what is at stake.

sideshow489 4 years ago
This has been a problem since at least the mid 90's.
dianneckcu 4 years ago
I believe in peaceful protest also but this wasn't. From this, I agree with other people when they said it... the crowd was advancing on the police line and the guy with the black hood that has a draw string started punching a one of the officers starting at 00:20 and onward. You can see his fist there. Although I do hear someone screaming "stop pushing us"; not sure if that was meant for the police or the group of people behind them pushing them.
Oortcloud 4 years ago
When you act offensively towards police officers, you have to expect tear gas and physical reactions. IF anything, I would suggest the title is misleading compared to the footage. Next time, lie less and don't act covertly, because the protesters were out there to bring more transparency. This costs everyone involved credibility.

There were reports of police pushing people into other riot police to start things.

wswass 4 years ago
Don't get me wrong i;m all for expressing your right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression, but this video is proof that the protest was no longer peaceful by any means... Fortunately the general public know what the red and black flags mean and the tactics so often used by the people who wave them.
Heddwynn 4 years ago
You people disgust me. "Merely shoving and pushing"?? Funny how you forgot to mention the guy punching the police officer in the head. Tear gas is used to restore civil order, you know, like when a group tries to force their way through a line of police officers just doing their jobs protecting property and people alike.
Heddwynn 4 years ago
Civil order? Shut the fuck up, hows that for civil order. Were you there? Do you even understand what they are protesting? Its your freedom man. Holly fuck that was ignorant. Props to the guy that punched the cop in the face.
dawsonkidtko 4 years ago
what is the time on that? I didn't see anyone push a cop in the head. Was the guy wearing one of the bandanas?
dianneckcu 4 years ago
I wouldn't so far as to call it "punching the police officer in the head". As he was at distance it was more like "tapping the police officer's protective visor".
I would like to see more protesters condemn violence and actually arrest other protesters who break the law by assaulting police officers. Get a few of those examples in the media!

You are fucking stupid. Those people were very violent and were about to assault the hotel where Bush was. Of course police did their job. They did a good job... but if it was just for me, I would have used real bullets instead.

Just for the record, several poeple posted rudedely and I deep-sixed the posts because they weren't civil. However they did make the point that this isn't as violent as in China. Well, we are protesting to make sure this doesn't BECOME China. In camera meetings, avoiding parliamentary oversight of legal changes, and riot geared police and protester holding pens are a bad prelude to fascism.
dianneckcu 4 years ago
I don't see any beating... only a little girl crying.
BarLaf 4 years ago
Between 33-37seconds one of the cops on the right hand side of the frame is wielding a baton against one of the people in their face from what I can tell. The crying lady must have gotten a face full of tear gas. There is someone else I saw in the viddie who also gets hit in the head. There are so many people jammed together and the camera angle is a bit weird making it difficult to see. I think the guy who shot this was holding his camera up in the air over his head.
dianneckcu 4 years ago
If you mean the redhead, she got pepper sprayed and they are rinsing her eyes out. She is not a little girl - she is a young woman. She is in the first part of the video and well back from the front of the line.
Since when is it normal to tear gas and use a baton on protesters who are merely shoving and pushing? This all started back with Mike Harris and has gotten worse. Now you young folks thinks it's NORMAL! Which is terrible.
