Give me a break, you guys. It's a wushu tournament blade and she's probably doing her tournament performance form. Every time someone is all, "Oh I doubt she could handle a REAL sword!" it's just belittling her. Is there something wrong with practicing the art for its own sake or to compete in tournaments? No one trains for war with these styles anymore. So quit being jerkwads and give credit to the time and dedication this woman has put into her training.
The Baguazhang Broadsword that I have is over 5 feet tall and weighs just under 7 pounds. I doubt that the woman in this video can handle the Bagua Dao that I have, the way she plays with that exhibition (toy-like) Bagua Dao. My broadsword is the same model broadsword that He Jinbao is using in his video - do a YouTube search for "Nine Dragon Saber of Yin Style Bagua - 4th Section." The blade is thick spring steel, not that flimsy paper-thin stuff. She has good skill with a toy-like Bagua Dao.
I just can't get the hang of this thing, being more adept in the Katana. I mean is this sword real hard to master, or does it require specific techniques.
Sorry folks...that's a traditional bagua dao used for practice. It's not as heavy as the genuine article, but it's much heavier than a wushu blade. Also, she is not performing wushu, that is real baguazhang...her muddy stepping is correct.
The type of steel used is a generic SPRING steel, because its SPRINGY. It was not invented for wushu and therefore not called wushu steel. That is a name used on websites so that ignoramuses can tell between cutting practice and show pieces.
yes indeed weapons used of this type n style are made frm alluminium but i myself have the smaller version of this sword (a.k.a broad sword) and if "gic102" has ever had or handled either sword he/she would know that because of the material used the weapon is extremly sharp from say 3/4 the way up to the tip. i have myself witnessed friends of mine who are wushu players cut thmselves time n time again, that is y we are advised to tape the ends while we get used to the weapon and the forms....
I disagree with both of you (apologies for the rude opening statement XD ). I believe most of these weapons are made of so-called 'wushu steel', a thin, very flexible rolled steel, usually plated with chrome. These swords are sometimes referred to derisively as 'tin foil' swords
Mate, i don't care if it the weapon was historically accurate, aliminium or whatnot... i still would not want to get hit by it whilst she was on the other end! Very nice work.
"Second! Either way is it very obvious, that this girl is at expert level! (no matter what material, the sword is made of!)"
I beg to differ. Though she is very skilled if she has never practised with real swords, as opposed to these aluminium ones, I doubt she would be an expert.
Historically acurate weapons handle quite differently than aluminium swords.
You are right about: "Historically acurate weapons handle quite differently than aluminium swords"... BUT! ;-)
One can be an expert in several terms, aspects, ways, meanings, views, levels...etc. Included different kinds of weapon-types no matter what the material is made of!
Therefor... Does your reply NOT change anything about, my earlier "statement"/reply.
Aluminium? You haven't the first idea what your talking about. All of the swords in wushu are made of STEEL. They are made to taper like that for competition forms as they make a certain sound when used right, the judges score on this as they hear it. The balance is the important thing, solid weapons are not much different in weight. And yes she is an expert with that particular weapon solid or flexible. Please don't talk crap about things which you obviously have no idea about.
Finally a knowledgeable person! For those who might not get what you mean about steel being that flexible. The specific type if steel is "Spring Steel."
This is not 'spring steel' or 'combat steel', it is 'wushu steel' VERY VERY thin and light and floppy, it is PAPER THIN. Spring steel and wushu steel are NOT the same.
Spring steel is still flexible but heavier than wushu steel and combat steel is heavier still and much closer to actual weapon weight.
Wushu steel weapons are NOWHERE NEAR actual weapon weight. All you need to do is google this and you can educate yourself. I owned all three types and sold the 'wushu' steel weapon as useless.
fuck you, your wrong. i had a long response composed for a 3 year old comment so just fuck off. if you knew anything about martial arts, particularly Ba Gua, you'd know this is a wushu version of bagua, and the knife used is for embellishment purposes only. Ba Gua actually makes the use of large, smithed blades easy to wield given the use of body weight, and dynamic motion to disperse the weight. So rather than using sheer muscle, which is still important, one uses the body to
First! There's a possibility that only the last third part of the sword, (the tip)is made of thin sheets of aluminium foil. (that is not unusual with a sword that size)
Second! Either way is it very obvious, that this girl is at expert level! (no matter what material, the sword is made of!)
Remember! That, it is not only the "correct"/traditional martial artist,
that are capable of showing expert skills, worth watching. :-)

She's also using a spring steel wushu sword, probably 1/3 the weight of the actual da dao

10lbs?? I highly doubt it, that is a typical 'wushu' piece of tin foil, it is not a 10lb 'da dao'.
It is not an actual weapon, just a floppy show prop.

ACK! She's so good, but I always think the performer is going to chop his/her nose off in this and similar forms ;P

@gic102 even if it's aluminium, it must weight at least 1 kg. the reason why she was able to move it so fast is in the way she handled the sword.
