Actually, the choice of music for the scene was a blooper. The real-life murders took place in 1981 (but they might have situated the murders to happen in 1980 or '81 in the movie). But the playing of Night Ranger's "Sister Christian" (1983) during the scene got me mistaken as to when the murders took place.
