I never liked this Song. This might be the 2nd time I've listened to it. The value in real friendships can't be undermined when it comes to Music. People don't sound as good together when they don't connect. I don't care how talented they are individually.
Song has potential, but the guy cannot sing... no doubt that he hand a major hand in George Michael's success, but he simply cannot sing and that explains his failure to succeed outside of Wham!
I always assumed this dude had no talent since he disappeared after Wham broke up but he really wasn't all that bad, just a lot different than that crap he did with George Michael. I can see why they broke up since his musical tastes seemed to be a lot different than George Michael's.
I always thought this sounded very similar to Roxette's "The Look". Andrew Ridgeley was very underrated. He's quite talented in his own right, if not so much as a vocalist, but as a songwriter.
When Rolling Stone magazine reviewed this CD they gave it one star!! They didn't like the 'Faith' cloned image or his reedy sounding voice. In fact the only track they liked was "Shake (hardcore)"- the extra version on the CD album-and it was INSTRUMENTAL!!!! Ouch!! I'm not hating, just didn't work. George had the 'it' factor. I remember feeling a sense of loss for Andrew since he really tried hard on this. (sorry- I don't have the CD). Maybe I can remix it (licence the rights).
Been looking for this song for a long time. The information about this guy being from Wham is similar to the scent of someone's fart. Did not need to know. You farted on me.
This song absolutely sucks balls until it hits the chorus at 1:39, where it morphs into something that resembles Motley Crue in its heyday. It's a damn kicking song from that point forward. I'm just glad I had the patience to hear it out, because during the first minute I was trying to figure out how the fuck this guy got a gig in Wham! or anywhere else.
@RavishingBeyond dude, agreed on song quality, but with a few tweaks this song could have been a huge Crue hit. Too bad Andrew go his fingers on it first.
Whats strange though is Wham had a different sound than George Michael solo. But that could have been the stages George was going through. There were tremendous differences between Make It Big/Edge Of Heaven, Faith, and Listen Without Prejudice. Faith was too pop in my opinion, I liked Wham better. It had more to do with concept and ideas than anything else. Even a non musical contributor could still have an influence over the music.
I dont think Andrew Ridgley did anything. He was exactly Milli Vanilli. He had the looks, the sex appeal, and the presence to make Wham look like a 2 boy group instead of a solo band. I dont doubt he had some contribution to the music, production, ideas about the band, their style, etc. But he did not sing and if you look at every video or live show, he isnt really playing the guitar. He's there for looks and moral support.

Well, uhm, err, it does kinda grow on you. Especially the part where the song really kicks it up there & also the very end part, He couldn't have been in one of the top bands in the whole world and not learn something! You couldn't work with George that long and not learn something! I love Andrew, and GM too. xx
Great memories!! I met Andrew Ridgeley in The Netherlands back in 1990 (March 21)in front of the Countdown studio. He did some promotional work for his first solosingle "Shake". Paul Ridgeley (Andrew's brother) was there as well...
I always thought this song reminded me of Roxette's "The Look". I think it's really good. Andrew Ridgeley is very underrated. As far as I'm concerned, if it wasn't for Andrew, there'd be no George Michael or Wham! His vocals may not have been the best, but in terms of sheer raw power, he had the goods.
Without George Michael there would be no Andrew Ridgeley either, it's a two way street. Surely we are in no doubt here as to which one of them is the biggest talent? There's no debate on that score.
If it wasn't for the fact GM could sing, not just sing, be an awesome vocalist, produce, arrange etc then Andrew Ridgeley would be no more than a Hertfordshire boy with a dream, he latched on to George and his talent as much as George latched on to him and his charisma.

I have to admit it, I don't like the sound of his voice compared to George Michaels voice. I love the smoothing sound of George Michael. Andrew has this high pitched sort of kiddy voice and I am not really feeling that like I love George's Voice.
Some acts just can't break from their past. Most people seem to remember Ridgeley as the guy who didn't seem to do anything as part of Wham. George Michael went on to be the star, and Ridgeley went on to be forgotten. Another example, Prince hit his peak back in the late 80s or so, and still had hits later on, but when he "dumped" the Chaos and Disorder album, it didn't fare too well. But if, say, a lesser known group had done the same, it would have been hailed as, at least, a good CD.
Andrew was also in an, I don't know what to call it. Maybe a paradox ?
His Wham fans generally could not accept his more hard rock type new image and hard rockers could not get over him being in Wham which many of them considered a "Pretty Boy Pop Band"
Only the hard core fans of Wham "Like myself" people who considered anything put out by George or Andrew to be good could go for this. Or maybe hard rock guys who didn't know about his Wham past but still liked his stuff. Hmm
I remember the Rolling Stone review of "Son of Albert." They gave it a 1 and a 1/2 star and said Ridgeley puts on all the trappings of a rock star, the clothes, the sneer, the rock machismo, but it's hollow. BUT they did say that on "Shake," he manages to get things at least half right. I'm one of the few who found George Michael's transformation into a stubble-, leather-wearing tough guy who played white-guy funk/R&B laughable, while everyone else ate it up. It stunk of gimmick, and it was.
how can they say he did not do anything with Wham! when he was always seen playing the guitars...........ummm playing guitars are not easy, unless he did not play them for real with Wham!? I wish he had not tried to go Hard Rock and instead went totally opposite and went Acoustic, he has a better voice for Acoustic type songs.
I think the story I read that in was more talking about the casual, mainstream view of Andrew Ridgeley, as opposed to reality. It seemed the focus quickly grew to be on George Michael, and once he left Wham, Ridgeley was largely forgotten by most.
he doesnt bad voice for 80s pop. he couldnt done something with his solo career i think, if he formed a pop rock band, something like a hard rock duran duran. would of been a hit, if he kept going for it, i think.
This is quite a departure from his Wham! material. It kind of sounds like Jesus Jones, which would be appropriate since it was released in the early 90's. I can see why it didn't do well, but it's not bad...
Well, no, it doesn't work too well. But at the time it was all I had to work with. Hell, my mother was working at a beef jerky factory in '89 for cryin out loud. Just saying that, since then, before this youtube video, there appears to be no other way to listen to this song. You can't even get a CD and I don't understand why, I mean it's not like the song is anywhere near as bad as Gloria Gaynor's "I will survive".
By the way, there is a Youtube video out there with Eddie Murphy interviewing Ron Howard on SNL from when the movie Night Shift came out, and Eddie Murphy keeps calling Ron Howard "Opey Cunningham", and it's on Youtube because someone held a camcorder to the TV while it was on. Talk about bad acoustics, but you work what you've got 'cuz that material isn't exactly readily available even now.
Andrew is my hero...so is Paul Rutherford (of Frankie Goes To Hollywood)...I just finished getting out of a bad band breakup and think it would be cool to do a song with those two.
My band was called Rychard Head (yes, Rychard with a "y") and there is stuff by the band on MySpace & right here on YouTube! Enjoy!
I do remember this song-I bought the cassette single of it. I liked it-thought it was sexy and funky and I hoped he could have some hits like George did.
The same here. Was a huge fan of Wham and was so happy when this song came out, then haven't heard it for like 15 years now, but the melody has been in my head ever since....
Congratulate to this and I dont care what anyone says or think...YOU WERE GREAT LOOKING IN THE DIFFERENT STORY MOVIE! SUCH A WONDERFUL GUY! WISH YOU ALL THE BEST TO YOU AND KAREN! LOVE,
I still think it is a shame he quit on the music, gotta love his sound and it would have been nice to see and hear how he would have developed himself as a solo singer...
I love this song. It went to No.16 in Australia in 1990, and I loved it even though I wasn't a Wham! fan. I felt really sorry for Andrew with the shitty reviews that he got from the press and fellow musicians over this song and the album "Son Of Albert" that it was taken from. A pity he doesn't want anything to do with the music business anymore, but in a way I can't say that I blame him.
That's what Andrew Ridgeley sounds like? Wow. No offense, though, but I've always wanted to know what kind of a contribution he's made to music. From what I'm hearing, it sounds like he's desperate to compete with fellow friend George Michael.
I think andrew only made this album to fulfill contractual commitments, I think George and Andrew both owed solo albums at the time, I don't think ridgeley was ever comfortable being a singer and that's why he hasn't shown any interest making music since
I sooo glad someone posted this song. Hate he didn't make more videos, but he needed to fire his stylist. Very bad choice of hats. It ws great seeing this video again.
yeah I remmeber being in Iowa for one year when this song was released. One of the local radio shows had a show once a week called "Rock over London" it is where I heard about the albums release, and I think I heard Shake and I know I heard Red Dress on that show before they were released in the States.
I remember how exited I was to hear that George Micheal was on Red Dress. Wham breifly united again. I was sure it would make No 1 in the states at the time. I was to overoptomistic.
Pleasantly surprised someone posted this. I remember being 20 dancing to this in Brisbane. From memory sadly it wasn't a hit.Imagine making so much money so not having to work a boring job in his life!!
i looooove this song and wham! wham! is nothing but talent people like george michael, andrew ridgeley, pepsi and shirlie, and deon estus. george michael/wham! froever
I remember being a major Wham fan in the 80s and waiting for Wham's reunification that neve rhappened. I was one of the first to buy this album but I have moved so many times since it has been long lost.
That said. I would like to get this album again as well as the follow up song red dress. Red Dress actually had George Micheal on it and I think Deon Estes as well. It's the closest thing to Wham Reunification that their ever was.
I never liked this Song. This might be the 2nd time I've listened to it. The value in real friendships can't be undermined when it comes to Music. People don't sound as good together when they don't connect. I don't care how talented they are individually.

fallenwillrise 4 years ago
This is quite a departure from his Wham! material. It kind of sounds like Jesus Jones, which would be appropriate since it was released in the early 90's. I can see why it didn't do well, but it's not bad...

I have the album. Its not that great.A side is ok,but b side sucks!

You know how I have this song? I held a tape recorder up to the television speaker while MTV was on.
catgrr8 4 years ago 3
Bah, I tried that in the past as a kid. Doesn't work to well does it.
Seeing this video makes me miss the time when george and Andrew amde the charts though, sighhhh !
supremeobliterator 4 years ago
Well, no, it doesn't work too well. But at the time it was all I had to work with. Hell, my mother was working at a beef jerky factory in '89 for cryin out loud. Just saying that, since then, before this youtube video, there appears to be no other way to listen to this song. You can't even get a CD and I don't understand why, I mean it's not like the song is anywhere near as bad as Gloria Gaynor's "I will survive".
catgrr8 4 years ago
By the way, there is a Youtube video out there with Eddie Murphy interviewing Ron Howard on SNL from when the movie Night Shift came out, and Eddie Murphy keeps calling Ron Howard "Opey Cunningham", and it's on Youtube because someone held a camcorder to the TV while it was on. Talk about bad acoustics, but you work what you've got 'cuz that material isn't exactly readily available even now.
catgrr8 4 years ago
You would need to put "Eddie Murphy snl" in the Youtube browser to find it.

Man, I thought this was a hit when I first heard/saw in 1990. Then it just disappeared.

The same here. Was a huge fan of Wham and was so happy when this song came out, then haven't heard it for like 15 years now, but the melody has been in my head ever since....
So great it's here

I still think it is a shame he quit on the music, gotta love his sound and it would have been nice to see and hear how he would have developed himself as a solo singer...

I love this song. It went to No.16 in Australia in 1990, and I loved it even though I wasn't a Wham! fan. I felt really sorry for Andrew with the shitty reviews that he got from the press and fellow musicians over this song and the album "Son Of Albert" that it was taken from. A pity he doesn't want anything to do with the music business anymore, but in a way I can't say that I blame him.

I love this track...
Even now it still kicks arse and is still a dirty, nasty, shiny track!!!
So.... glad i found it.

Does anyone know if David Austin wh co-wrote this song is also on the video ? I can't see much (images very dark + my computer screen is cr*p) :)

No, he's not appeared in this video.
But the lady from Father Figure - Tania Coleridge, actress and model - appears..

only a dedicated few understand that w/o andrew there would be no george.

That's what Andrew Ridgeley sounds like? Wow. No offense, though, but I've always wanted to know what kind of a contribution he's made to music. From what I'm hearing, it sounds like he's desperate to compete with fellow friend George Michael.

I was just listening to his LP and singles yesterday, my mate didnt believe me he had a solo career, nice to see his vid, its been ages

Yup I'd have to agree that this does sound like Jane's Addiction. Had it been them to record this rather than Andrew, it would've been HUGE!

I think the chick from "Father Figure" is in this video.

Still love this song and "Flame" and "Mexico". Also love the extended "hardcore" remix of this song.
wvoutlaw2002 4 years ago
Agreed totally. The album is awesome, and it's a shame that critics gave it such a low rating. It ought to have gone platinum the world over.
fatpizzaman 3 years ago 2
And Wham should reunite and go Platinum the world over.
The the Eighties Haters how its done !!!
supremeobliterator 3 years ago 4
I think andrew only made this album to fulfill contractual commitments, I think George and Andrew both owed solo albums at the time, I don't think ridgeley was ever comfortable being a singer and that's why he hasn't shown any interest making music since
allyplumb 4 years ago
wow... sounds like someone liked jane's addiction a little!

I sooo glad someone posted this song. Hate he didn't make more videos, but he needed to fire his stylist. Very bad choice of hats. It ws great seeing this video again.

I think he was his own stylist.

yeah I remmeber being in Iowa for one year when this song was released.
I was to overoptomistic.
supremeobliterator 4 years ago
Pleasantly surprised someone posted this. I remember being 20 dancing to this in Brisbane. From memory sadly it wasn't a hit.Imagine making so much money so not having to work a boring job in his life!!

andrew is very talented just like george. Wham! is full of talented people like andrew, george, deon estus, pepsi and shirle
sharob1958 4 years ago
Ok a trivia question for all you Wham fans out there. My family could not afford Cablein the late 80s or early 90s so I don't know.
Is George Micheal in the "Red Dress" video or not. I did have "Son of Albert" And I know he is in the song.
Isn't he the voice of the guy in the end who keeps saying "She exits me, she invites me" or am I completly off on this ?
supremeobliterator 4 years ago
i looooove this song and wham! wham! is nothing but talent people like george michael, andrew ridgeley, pepsi and shirlie, and deon estus. george michael/wham! froever

Andrew's with that Bananarama chick now. Wonder why they never made any music together(?). I mean, they're both into music, so why not?

I remember being a major Wham fan in the 80s and waiting for Wham's reunification that neve rhappened. I was one of the first to buy this album but I have moved so many times since it has been long lost.
That said. I would like to get this album again as well as the follow up song red dress. Red Dress actually had George Micheal on it and I think Deon Estes as well. It's the closest thing to Wham Reunification that their ever was.

mmmm Andrew Ridgeley should be my lover!
