  • Brilliant - I agree @SpookyPie88 you have to play this loud! Shame it didn't chart :(

  • Can anyone tell me the type of jacket Paul Bell has with the big collar?

  • Thank you so much for posting this made me cry I adore this song bought the 12inch and lost it so many memories!!! x

  • Nothing beats playing this song ridiculously loud.

  • Directed by the much underrated Mike Brady (Love is a Stranger - Eurythmics) it was a nightmare shoot in dockland in a warehouse full of asbestos.

This is classic Mike Brady...portrait photography meets the music video. It didn't matter who the cameraman was, he always got this stills/action look.

Mike was and is a great talent.

Look at the early Jam videos....huge talent... MIKE BRADY.

  • The original two-piece was by far the best line-up, with just Paul and Grimmo… Real minimal and emotional,

supporting the Cure or at the Marquee way back in 19XX (fill the blanks).

  • love this song.... think it was 1985

  • I also have the free single of this from the Ultravox concert in Wembly in 85 as well. Still love this song 25 yrs on.

  • saw them support the banshees glasgow apollo around 1982

  • " i left home when i was just 17, and there isnt much that i havent seen"

    Sound track of my life!!!

  • Yes! First band I ever saw, since they opened up at my first ever gig, Ultravox at Wembley Arena, Nov 5, 1986. BAZWHITE just reminded me of the free 12" that came with the tour programme. How much did that cost to produce? Surprised they weren't a bigger band, they played more arena shows than most of the bands they opened for.

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride...

  • It was Philips CD player ad.I was in the ad on Piano..Mime is Money!!

  • Got the 12" version.....Top tune.....

  • saw them wi my mate puffin,in dundee caird hall when they supported the great big country..happy days..fckn mental brilliant band...

  • There was an ad for VHS Video Casettes (Phillips I think) around '86 which finished with the guy coming back from a night out to his swish pad, hitting the play button on the old VCR and these guys popping up playing the final bars of this track. The ad was played a lot until they released Rescue Me as a single. Would reakky like to see that ad again - take me back to being 17!

  • Not vhs mate, but to advertise the new CD format at that time. I recall the date as possibly late 85 early 86.

    Drew

  • This is a quote from Paul Bell himself:

"Rescue Me was used in a Phillips tv ad for Cd players (which were all the rage!) and another ad for really snazzy VHS recorders!!!??? We did four days filming, didn't get a free CD player or VHS player, no expenses... not even a free lunch! The extras made more from the ads than we did! Oh the glamorous world of pop meets tv!"

So we're both right. It was definitely the VCR ad that I remember. (Tarkhova is the wife's login BTW)

  • Used to play this ALL the time at WTCS, Friendly City Rock, in Fairmont, WV. What a great song!

  • Still have the 7" of this too!

Always thought this was a fine song (despite the synth lines being a bit of their time!).

Only just realised the Gavin Harrison connection!

    Thanks for posting!

  • I saw them support UVOX (Ultravox) back at Poole Arts Centre in 1986.

They gave away this track on 12 inch Vinyl with the programe. I thought it was pretty good. I think it's still in the attic....

  • Awesome, I've been hoping Z1 would pop up on "the tube" for ages. I still have the 7" single in pristine condition (well a bit dusty!) - boy does this make you feel middle-aged lol

  • saw Z1 support boomtown rats on the "In the long grass" tour, twice in ipswich, once at derngate northampton and somewhere else... and IMHO Z1 blew the rats off stage at every gig. BRILLIANT STUFF.

  • see Gavin Harrison playing drums..now with Porcupine tree..ah memories..I auditioned for these boys but apparently wasnt loud enough!! The bass player came to one of my gigs in the end and told me..ha!

  • Unbelivable......

    Thank you....

  • remember seeing them support the boomtown rats...the lead singer was totally pissed. still, went out and bought the album...great to hear it again after all these years!

  • i saw them support the banshees glasgow apollo 1982 i think, still have this single and the wests awake
