This song was originally released in November 1963 as the flip side of "When the Lovelight Starts Shining through His Eyes." According to a number of sources, H-D-H reworked it in 1966 as the Four Tops' "Standing in the Shadows of Love."
Another great non-hit from the early HDH days...like Ask Any Girl, this one also seems to have more of a classic girl group sound, which often got lost in the power of the hits...thanks for sharing
Many people mistakenly believe that stereo brings out the background of songs but in truth its the mono version that allows the background to be heard more clearly. Stereo just echoes the main tracks and adds more power and sound but not sounds.
the metalophon is on the right and the deep piano on the left the lead and the background in the middle
if you have mono you have a more quiet sound with no room effects or different channels on the left and the right speaker. If you have stereo left and right are different you can also have the channel stereo effect on which is the lead left or right and the instruments on the other side. But this is mono because I recorded it per line
I was just reading the linear notes on the complete studio duets of the tempts and supremes and notice how thre are stereo mixes as well as mono of the same song. add this to the fact of the dozens of repackage versions and it's almost impossiable to determine which is the original. But I still believe that radio mono gives the best group sound as all the extraneous music is blocked out much like why jazz lovers look for old mono versions. its more like the studio sessions.
but if you listen to music most time by headphones it's not really good.
Anyway the best thing is when the lead and the background are equal loud like the bee gees or the marvelettes or martha and the vandellas had it. Not like the supremes where only was Diana the loudest and the supremes so much turned down that it was nearly impossible to hear them sometimes
Thas's why I recomend Mono on Supremes recordings made for am radio and small record players back in the sixties. on them you can hear all the ladies and as you said not just diana, that is why mono is sought after by some motown afficionadoes; so you get a whole new perspective on the motown sound ,its like when they tried to cram Quadrophonic sound on folkes and it bombed. They cramed so much extra junk trying to impress that you lost the soul of the music.good stereo is like technicolor. Art
I always liked the beat to this song . . . it reminded me of the feel of most of Mary Wells' music. "There's No Stopping Us Now," was another song that was under rated.
hmm a few songs which aren't still released or weren't for a long time could reach some higher chart positions like "(Let Me Hear You Say) I Love You" a REALLY amazing ballad which was later relased as mono on the 40th aniversary edtion of where did our love go or "you're gonne come to me"
This song should have been a #1 for our girls! It is consistently named as a fan favorite among all The Supremes' many unreleased songs, and when it was redone as Standing in the Shadows of Love for The Four Tops it became a hit. Not to mention it's been named by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. I think the harmonies in this song are tight and heavenly by all three.
The Supremes had soul, just because Diana's vocals were not like Gladys Horton's or Martha Reeves' don't mean she couldn't croon. But it was evident she was influenced vocally by doo-wop.
Yes a wunder that she sound so good here, cause I think the most oder nearly all songs were better with Flo on lead cuase she had more soul and love in her voice
Berry Gordy started Flo off and Tommy didn't help her by leaving knowing the situation and all she had been through. But that's a very nice picture and it shows Flo still tried to continue her life and be happy even though she wasn't allowed to take a bite out of her own cake (I meant that metaphorically). You can hear her well on this, thanks for the vid it's nice.
I think that Tommy did not really love Flo I believe that he was with her just for her fame but when she lost it he left and when she was about to gain it back that is when he came back wanting a pieace of the pie too.
People always speak of Berry Gordy and/or Diana Ross being responsible for the demise of Flo....but that credit is better suited to the man in the picture (Tommy Chapman)!!!!
yeah they all played a part including mary!! but tommy was the one who told her to ignore flo and leave..then her solo career b/c of failed and he left her and beat her..there are alot people who say he was in it for her money!
Pls ;-) I have 8 more but I have to take pictures under this music to uplode it but in short time I thing I uplode them :-) THX for yout comments yosolo57 and lilmissy691

One of the best recordings they ever made (certainly most underrated, a b-side?) . I never ever get tired of it.

The song the sing with Diana on lead wich are popular like Baby Love or so on are in my opinion good.
But there were a lot songs wich Flo had sung better or as good as Diana.
Diana had high and middle notes and flo high deep and middle .
Diana was able to sing pop and dixie or this genres. Flo had soul Jazz Blues and was nearly able to sing all genres.
But thx for commenting
Individuell83 4 years ago
comon now flo may have had a nice voice but she couldnt hold a candle to diana. berry did the right thing.
elane58 4 years ago
Sry but this is your meaning.
Flo was a suprano and was able to sing higher and deeper than Diana.
Diana hadn't a bad voice I like her voice but Flo ist better anyways.
Like on the song "people" or "love ain't love"
