Part of what really finished out their sound on this tour/album was the inclusion of really amazing session players (who were also excellent live performers)--John Giblin on Bass, Sue Hadjapolous-percussion, and Lisa Germano on fiddle. The three of them have played with a whole bunch of other bands/artists.
Simple Minds is a powerhouse 80's band with great stage presence. This video says it all; great vocals, guitar, synth and drums. Todays music isn't even in the same galaxy.
One of the best bands ever! Album #16 coming in 2012. In the mean time, check out singer Jim Kerr's spectacular first solo album, the awesome LostBoy AKA project!
I recorded this concert on MTV back in 1987, and I could not stop playing this song over and over again. Next, I got it off of Napster before the crackdown, and now it's on Youtube, and I still can't stop playing this song over and over again. This version sounds so much better than the album track, as the synthesizers are more up front. This 1985 concert from The Ahoy in Rotterdam is the Simple Minds at their very best, and this is the very best song from that concert. Amazing!!
Happy30th, thanks so much for posting this. Your Ahoy songs have much better audio quality than the other posters, especially when I add "&NR=1&fmt=18" to the end of the URL and reload [give it a try].
They are an under appreciated band in terms of the critics and music press. BTW Robyn Clarke is apparently 66 at this performance. Her Facebook states she is 91 this year 2010. What a voice!!!
@pauldringuk Real music / musicians, people with talent, iconic bands etc ... There isn't much call for it today as no one knows what Talent is , when, Hype, computers and the likes of the boy prick Justin Beiber seem to fit the bill now and have taken over ! Lol Long live the 80's !!
Underrated song from an underrated band. He sounds almost exactly as he does on the recorded version and Robin sounds EXACTLY as she does recorded. These guys were also incredibly charitable - just a class act all around.
u r so right my friend. simple minds were never a top selling band, but they were simply fantastic. I first got to know them at the age of 15, and since then I know all their songs by heart.
5 number one albums ! belfast child number one in 12 countrys in europe ! headllined wembley stadium 3 times ! 40 million albums sold worldwide ! don't you number 1 in usa !! funny you are lol
Wow, was there too. Was that the one with The Waterboys, In Tua Nua and the Bangles? Great times and this was one of the best televised concerts of the time - all thanks to that iconic pop show The Tube! Can't understand why they've never released it on DVD
.....! Once Upon A Time....That's once upon a time
You raise me up when I know you're around
But God only knows, what God only knows
You lift me up and you spin me around
God only knows, but God only knows...........
