  • what kind of groups do you get ?

  • @HEAVYbuck 1.5 inch at 100 yards.

  • @Gary7even Not bad at all..What brand and grain of ammo ?

  • @HEAVYbuck Monach, which is Academy's house brand. It's made by Barnhaul in Russia. This is the 123 gr FMJ stuff made for the AK47 and SKS.

  • @Calixtine I use the Remington bullets in my sks, they actually work much better than that steel case crap. no jams, shoot cleaner.

  • @Calixtine Yes, 7.26x39.

  • What's a good price for those?

  • @glennwih It's hard to say. The supply of these new seems to have dried up and used prices are going up.

  • @glennwih Around $500 to $600 dollars

  • @HEAVYbuck I got mine 4 months ago for $440.

  • Do you need high scope rings like on a CZ to clear the bolt? It doesn't look like you have tall ones on but I wanted to make sure.

  • @captainpegs07: No. It's close, but std rings work.

  • Nice Cross pen!

  • Damn that's a sexy rifle....I want one! Are these still being imported or would I have to look at gunshows?

  • @huntwithairguns Remington does not import these anymore. Look on gunbroker or at gun shows.

  • 798 is actually the best in class fine rifle for the price. its Mauser 98 barreled action is much superior than other modern bolts. It's a big mistake that Remington discontinued this model from their product line........

  • I imagine the bolting action is stiff because it uses a Mauser design, which is less smooth than other bolt designs.

  • @SaxonSwine What "other bolt designs" would that be? 99% of all bolt action designs are basically two-lug Mauser derived designs. The classic pre-64 Winchester Model 70 is a virtual Mauser 98 clone and is one of the smoothest bolt actions ever made. My Ruger 77 is likewise a Mauser 98 design and is smooth as butter.

  • I have one of these. I loaded some lead 135gn bullets with 23.5gn of RL7, and 27gn of H322. also some 150gn 303 bullets with 28gn or 28.3gn H322, I forgot how much. The 150 gn bullets really sound like a 308.

  • 1.5" with Russian ammo? How'd ya manage to pull that off!?!

  • 1.5" at 100yds is great for that ammo, the real weak link in this equation: I wonder what the older corrosive cheap com bloc stuff can group..they were reputed for highly variable powder charges, thus affecting accuracy, but the new Russian steel case stuff is probably fine. I wonder if the acid test for accuracy would be a single shot (rossi, h and r, etc.)? ..would much rather have a bolt gun.

  • I'm really interested in this. I am also considering the CZ 527 Carbine in the same caliber. Did you shoot it enough to heat up the barrel, and if so did that affect accuracy?

    Great job on this review.

  • @jinggoyd1967 7.62x39 ammo is not a real hot 30 cal round so the barrel doesn't heat up a lot like a 30-06 or magnums do. I saw no degradation in accuracy with a warm barrel. The barrel is free-floating.
