this fight isnt fair because its player vs. cpu and would be fair even if it was player vs. player becuse the other player may not be as good, so the only fair way is cpu vs. cpu

But, Mario is even better than Sonic in a match without items or with items when anyone can play with him.

actually it depends on the player really, as well as the stage... for example, mario and sonic are evenly matched in animal crossing and final destination... but Mario has the advantage in battle field when sonic has the advantage in luigi's mansion

Luigimaster dose kind of have a point, if u are the player MOST of the time u win, not always, but its guranteed with a one on one, excuse my spelling btw =P, for example, im not to good with sonic but i owns with mario, but i can still kick marios ass lvl 9 with sonic i still would rather prefer mario over sonic just because he is well balanced and im more familiar with his move set, =P! anyway, happy brawling to those who have the game!
