I used to turn out the lights and all other sound while i played the Thief series back in the day, freaked me out! Love the mouse-spasm when you came face to face with the ghost, I did that plenty of times too, lol
When I was younger (probably 9 years old) I remember my brother showed me this part of the game. It was really scary. Now I played the Thief series on my own (I'm 15 now) and I didn't know when this part would come :) heh It was so awesome when I finally got there, it's really scary if you have surround sound and play in the dark. I was playing this around 11 o clock in the evening.
II FOUND THE SOLOUTION. Put ur Gramma to the highest, put ur screen to the highest brightness (or until its bright enough to see clearly),put ur volume low, open the door, chuck tonnes of flares, go in, do ur business and piss off. i
I may be a big, burly scruffy guy but when it comes to this stuff I get really chicken shit. As soon as i pulled that lever and opened the secret door and heard the noises i got so fucking shaky.
So what im gonna do is watch this video over and over until i get used to it, but i don't think i ever will :'(
It's not "OHMIGODWHATTHEFUCK" scary, it's more that kind of creeping unease that sticks with you afterwards and sneaks up on you in the middle of the night.
Yea 5 Stars for the most scary opponent in computer game history! The eerie sounds it makes combined with its very dangerous attributes, game mechanics-wise, makes you actually fear these beasts.
Now that you mention it, the name of the mission or the mission number should probably be in the video or video info. A quick edit to the video's title should be good.
When the idea is not to get caught, and anything without life in it is a good place to be, the oppertunity to place someone somewhere in order to scare the living shit out of you is just too good to resist.
Yeah, the Abysmal Gale stuff was pretty durn spooky: close quarters with zombies, ick. But compared to the Cradle, the ghostship is like a Sunday morning walk in the garden.
I'm so happy. :D I got T:DS on Steam, and recently bought this off of my friend who's had it for 5 years and I never knew about it! >:O I'm glad the second one stayed more true to the first one, unlike T:DS... Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to playing the Cradle and getting the living shit scared out of me! =)
Yeah, Deadly Shadows is quite different compared to the first two games, but all of 'em are mighty fine, and the Cradle holds claim to one of the best subplots and environments in any game.
Does anything actually hurt you in that library? I remember trying that mission, but I was too chicken to go inside the library, so I skipped the stage. D:
If my memory serves me correctly, the ghost strutting around the second floor of the library throws around harmful ecto-energy balls if you get his attention -- same kind of dangerous ghost that shows up in other spooky areas of the game (e.g., the haunted cathedral).
The cradle wasn't that scary, in my opinion. Kinda creepy at first, but after you killed your first one, they got kind of annoying. The bonehoard and cathedral missions in T1 were scary to me.
Haha it's cool. I did that a couple times in the first and third games. The second one wasn't really scary since there wasn't much (if any) zombies like the first Thief game or rattling cages or creaky floors like the third game. But, that's just me. =)
I haven't played that level (or game) in a while, but weren't they the spirits of people you find dead and hidden behind a library wall later on in that level? I don't remember if finding the bodies was a requirement or an extra for the mission. Oh, by the way: spoilers.
I can pinpoint the exact moment where you crapped yourself! The library wasn't that bad. Reading the texts before I entered the library I kind of geared myself up for the 'Apparitions'. I left the library till last.
never seen this library level before looks scary as hell! just remembered where the sound effects come from, Thief: deadly shadows, Shalebridge Cradle now that was unnerving for me!
you bet shalebridge was scary... I can't even pass it from fear... plus I have barely any equipment cuz those damn keeper enforcers keep chasing me...
those zombies moaning and the spirits that kinda sound like scratched records were completly terrorizing to me, i dont even know how i had the ballz to beat those games i cant explain it i'm not that brave but i beat them and it was worth it, someday somebody will return thief to the awesome roots of these gems i hope i'm still alive when that day comes.
First I was very scared too when I had saw the female ghost. Its s sad that in the second Dark Project not many undead are. It had make so many fun in the first Dark Project to blowing up these undead with the fire arrows.
the part where i got scared was in the necro tower where you have to find angelwatch, i think. Two zombies came out of nowhere there. plus they have zombie like moans :( i tried to escape but i died lol
Nothing compares to the Shalebridge Cradle mission of Thief: Deadly Shadows. It's sure to make you piss yourself once or twice...but even when you're not jumping out of your seat, it's just incredibly creepy.
In T2, the cathedral level is so scary! In the basement with all the dead peoples graves, you here voices like that, but also here a chain ratling...Then BOOM! Skeleton man!!!T2 is such a scary game!
Hell no!!! Those final levels were just downright boring, they were a pain in the ass. They looked as if they had been hastily put together to finish this game before they closed down Looking Glass. It's kinda sad, because the first 80% of Thief 2 are really great.
I agree, those levels were boring... except the library. It's one of the best places in Thief II. I was playing this level around the midnight and when I saw that female ghost..Brrrr..
lol u got scared and so did i if u look closer theres a ghost by the fire and a ghost walking by..... if he spotts u he will attack you until u die i have the game too ^_^
This room was the scariest in Dark Project 2. I miss the old missions of Dark Project 1 with the Zombies, dead Hammerites and so on. That was so cool.

Blasting power metal also works wonders. For the purpose, I recommend the album Dawn of Victory by Rhapsody.
But I've used the full-brightness trick too, mostly for console games, specifically Fatal Frame and Silent Hill.

Play it at night with a proper 5.1 setup.
Preferably alone and/or an attendant cat that all of a sudden bumps open the door to your room while you are hiding in the shadows

That happened to me, by the way. Damn I was shaking... but I think my poor cat was terrified more than me for my reaction XD

today, in computer games nothing can scare me but give me the zombies or ghosts in thief 1 and 2 and i'm crapping myself again.
thief is best!

In the library is a secret ( 2 corpses behind a bookcase, but also no loot).
Those corpses must belong to the ghosts.

I like the pirate ghost in the submarine mission... he appears and tries to kill Garret when he steals the treasure... that's an epic moment.
